Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Jesus Life OF jesus and christianity. - But history does not stand alone in being unable to refuse the task of giving a scientific account Of the life of Jesus. The execution of the work is imperatively demanded by the Christian religion itself. The great interest which the person Of Jesus, his public ministry, and his fate, possess for Christianity is as clearly as possible shown by this fact, that of all its sacred writings, the four Gospels are unquestionably the best known and the most popular throughout the whole Christian world.1 The early Christian community might have rested satisfied with these four written Sources. It read in them how the life of Jesus was passed and from the fact that the Church handed down these writings from generation to generation as her sacred treasure, it might be regarded as an act of piety to believe in them in the smallest matters as well as in those of great importance without further question. But such an attitude can no longer be taken at the present day, and for these reasons. On the one hand, scholars have diligently applied themselves to the study of the Biblical writings, and more especially the Gospels. On the other hand, we know also, at least with approximate exactness, how it was that the New Testament arose. Thus it is now an established fact that. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ministry of Jesus, Meditations for Six Months In this little volume I have proposed for meditation the chief miracles, parables, and other incidents and discourses in the Public Life of our Lord. At the head of each meditation I have indicated the passage from the Gospels on which it is based. But lest some should find it inconvenient to refer to it, I have given in each case a short summary of the passage. In the order of events I have followed Father Coleridge's Vitae Vita Nostra, and in matters of interpretation I have for the most part kept close to Maldonatus' Commentary on the Gospels. These Meditations are calculated to fill up just half the year. Any one commencing them after the octave of Corpus Christi will find that they will carry him on to the beginning of Advent or thereabouts. I have not attempted to give any rules respecting preparatory prayer, or good resolutions at the end, but I would remind the reader that if nothing can prosper without the help of God, least of all can meditations be made successfully unless His grace be given, and that the test of a good meditation is not mere pious thoughts or affections, but the practice during the day of the virtues pondered over in the morning meditation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Jesus Concerning the Kingdom of God, and the Church In the body of our Lord's teaching as recorded in the Gospels the references to the kingdom of God occupy a prominent place. According to the common testimony of the Synoptical Gospels Jesus opened his public ministry in Galilee with the announcement, that the kingdom was at hand, Matt. iv. 17; Mk. i. 15; Lk. iv. 43. In the last mentioned passage he even declares that the main purpose of his mission consists in the preaching of the good tidings of the kingdom of God. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Ministry The object of this book is to furnish some answer to this question; to indicate to priests and preach ers what it is which induces half the population of New York city to lay aside their commercial pur suits and gather in their churches every seventh day; to interpret to themselves the men and women who form these congregations, and explain to them what it is that they are often unconsciously Seeking; and to indicate to those who rarely or never do go to church the advantage which they might secure if they were in this respect to conform to the custom, not only of their fellow countrymen in America, but of their fellow men throughout the world. The Christian minister fulfills a fourfold func tion: he is pastor, administrator, priest, and prophet or preacher. As pastor, he is the personal friend and counselor of his people; as administrator, the executive head of his church, which should be his force as well as his field. These two aspects of his work are not considered in this volume; it is de voted exclusively to a consideration of the minister as priest and prophet. This is done, not to conceal from the reader the predilections of the author for his own denomination - the Cumberland Presbyterian Church - but because there is nothing in this book of a sectarian character - nothing to prevent so comprehensive a dedication. And, because of this fact, the author trusts and believes that hundreds and thou sands outside Oi his Christian fold will read this book with interest and profit. Book excerpt: Jesus Christ public ministry was all about revealing God's grace and truth to us and God's plan to reconcile us back to himself through faith in his son Jesus Christ death, burial, and resurrection. God was keeping the promise he made to us a long time ago. "And I will put enmity between you and the woman. And between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel." (Genesis 3:15) The fulfillment of this promise is announced to us in John's gospel: "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." (John 3:16) God was saying in Genesis 3:15, he was going to send us a Savior who would die for all our sins and in John 3:16, we are told that the long-awaited Savior is here.
