Book excerpt: Lisbeth Salander, heroine of Stieg Larsson's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and its sequels, is one of the most compelling, complex characters of our time. Is she an avenging angel? A dangerous outlaw? What makes Salander tick, and why is our response to her—and to Larsson's Millennium trilogy—so strong? In The Psychology of the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, 19 psychologists and psychiatrists attempt to do what even expert investigator Mikael Blomkvist could not: understand Lisbeth Salander. • What does Lisbeth's infamous dragon tattoo really say about her? • Why is Lisbeth so drawn to Mikael, and what would they both need to do to make a relationship work? • How do we explain men like Martin Vanger, Nils Bjurman, and Alexander Zalachenko? Is Lisbeth just as sexist and as psychopathic as they are? • What is it about Lisbeth that allows her to survive, even thrive, under extraordinary conditions? • How is Lisbeth like a Goth-punk Rorschach test? And what do we learn about ourselves from what we see in her?

Book excerpt: ABOUT THE BOOK A journalist and investigator into right-wing Nazi organizations in Sweden, Steig Larsson had a stressful and dangerous career. To help him unwind after long days at the office, he wrote the Millennium Trilogy for fun in the evenings, cathartically turning events and facts from his life and work into a story of empowerment. Before his death, he stated that all of the details of the harrowing murders and situations in his books were facts from cases he had seen throughout the course of his work. He cut and pasted these facts and cases together to create Lisbeth Salander and Mikael Blomkvist's story. The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, the first book of the Millennium Trilogy, for which worldwide sales are approaching 60 million, spent 128 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list and 711 days on the Amazon top 100. Stieg Larsson was the first translated author in two decades to have a book reach number one on the New York Times Bestseller list. It has been translated into 37 languages. MEET THE AUTHOR Estelle Wagner grew up in Napa, California. She attended Sarah Lawrence College in New York where she graduated with concentrations in Latin American Political Studies and Dance. She currently lives with her husband in Buenos Aires, Argentina and enjoys traveling, dancing, and reading. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK Harriet's disappearance in The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo juxtaposes two eras of criminal investigation. In the first, Henrik Vanger's enormous library of files, photographs, interview statements, and police reports. In the second, Lisbeth Salander's slim laptop, the internet, and Milton Securities high-tech devices. Vanger hires Blomkvist to look at his dusty old files and photographs with fresh eyes and a new perspective, which is what Blomkvist intends to do. But he and Salander are only able to solve the crime using new technologies not available in the past, and ones that would never have occurred to Henrik Vanger or his fellow octogenarian, the police investigator. Working with the previous era's evidence is frustrating for Blomkvist. The photos show an incomplete story of the day, so he dives into the newspaper's photographic archives to examine every potentially helpful picture from the day Harriet disappeared. His best clue, the couple behind Harriet, has to be tracked down over hundreds of kilometers and days of investigation. In the end, the photo he finds is grainy and blurred, useless except for the color of the man's sweater. If Harriet had disappeared in present day times, all the stores would have had security cameras. The accident on the bridge would have been filmed by dozens of cellphone cameras. The visual evidence would have been overwhelming.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Feminist Views from Somewhere: Post-Jungian Themes in Feminist Theory explores what and how Jungian thought contributes to feminist thinking. Broadly speaking, feminist thinking, or thinking by and about women as autonomous, intelligent and independent agents, has opened up scholarship through insightful, reflective critique and practice. This is the starting point of this collection from a range of theorists, interested in the multiple concerns of Jungian and analytical psychology. The contributors take a unique approach to Jungian thinking. Rather than focusing on its mythological aspects, the authors develop alternative, feminist approaches that enhance the appreciation of the possibilities for Jungian and post-Jungian studies. With a primarily theoretical orientation, the rigorous, critical approaches in the collection highlight the possibilities of imaginative Jungian theory. Divided into three parts, ‘Viewing Earth’, ‘Clinical Perspectives’ and ‘Literary Landscapes’, the chapters cover themes including embodiment, intersubjectivity, individuation and narrative. The contributors vividly reflect the range and diversity of opinions amongst women influenced by Jungian thought. Feminist Views from Somewhere is essential reading for academics and students of Jungian and post-Jungian studies, women’s studies and gender studies, as well as analytical psychologists in practice and in training.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's dangerous to go alone! Take this (book). For more than 30 years, The Legend of Zelda—which immerses players in a courageous struggle against the shadowy forces of evil in a world of high fantasy—has spanned more than 30 different installments, selling over 75 million copies. Today, it is one of the most beloved video game franchises around the globe. Video game sales as a whole have continued to grow, now raking in twice as much money per year as the entire film industry, and countless psychologists have turned their attention to the effects gaming has on us: our confidence, our identity, and our personal growth. The Psychology of Zelda applies the latest psychological findings, plus insights from classic psychology theory, to Link, Zelda, Hyrule, and the players who choose to wield the Master Sword. In The Psychology of Zelda, psychologists who love the games ask: • How do Link's battles in Ocarina of Time against Dark Link, his monstrous doppelganger, mirror the difficulty of confronting our personal demons and the tendency to be our own worst enemies? • What lessons about pursuing life's greater meaning can we take away from Link's quests through Hyrule and beyond the stereotypical video game scenario of rescuing a Princess (Zelda)? • What do we experience as players when we hear that familiar royal lullaby on the ocarina, Saria's spirited melody in the Lost Woods, or the iconic main theme on the title screen? • How do the obstacles throughout Majora's Mask represent the Five Stages of Grief? • What can Link's journey to overcome the loss of the fairy Navi teach us about understanding our own grief and depression? • Why are we psychologically drawn to the game each and every time a new version becomes available even when they all have a similar storyline? Think you've completed the quest? The Psychology of Zelda gives you new, thrilling dungeons to explore and even more puzzles to solve.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do people know about the Bible, and how much do they know? The media often discusses the worrying 'decline' in biblical literacy, but what does this really mean, and how can we measure this assumed 'decline'? How can we go about teaching 'biblical literacy', and about teaching teachers how to teach it? Rethinking Biblical Literacy explores the question of biblical literacy, examining the Bible's use, influence and impact in advertising, street art, poetry, popular erotic literature, Irish and UK secondary education, stand-up comedy and The Simpsons TV series to display the different types of literacy and knowledge of the Bible. Katie B. Edwards brings together several specialists in the cultural use, impact and influence of the Bible to examine the contested nature of biblical literacy and to explore the variety of ways of 'knowing' about the Bible. The picture created is one of a broad range and at times surprising depth of knowledge about what remains arguably the most influential collection of texts ever to be published.

Book excerpt: Using historical and current examples from film, television, literature, advertisements, and music, this book reveals the ways that rape and abuse are typically presented—and misrepresented—and evaluates the impact of these depictions on consumers. Incidences of domestic abuse and sexual assault aren't only commonplace nationwide and the source of a shockingly large number of serious injuries and deaths; they're also problems that are often subject to myths and misleading depictions in popular culture and media. The author of this important book seeks to shed light on the situation by examining the specific issues related to domestic violence and sexual assault, from the scope and extent of the problem to victim and offender characteristics, and from common misconceptions to societal, cultural, and judicial responses and prevention efforts. Each chapter discusses movies, music, literature, and other forms of popular culture that address issues of domestic abuse and sexual assault, identifying both accurate depictions and problematic examples. The final section of the book addresses how our culture responds to and attempts to prevent domestic abuse and sexual assault, covering depictions of police response to these kinds of crimes in popular culture, how the justice system handles these cases, and individual and community efforts to curb domestic abuse and sexual assault. A compendium of films, documentaries, popular books, and song lyrics featuring domestic abuse and sexual assault enables readers to easily investigate the subject further.
