Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Psychology of Schopenhauer in Its Relation to His System of Metaphysics Schopenhauer developed his system on lines that originated in and emanated from the labors Of Kant. The problems Of both philosophers are metaphysical. All such problems take their rise in psychology, which is at once their source and a con tributor to their, solutions. Neither philosopher was aware how much he depended on the complications Of an introspective men tal science. In tracing the relation between Schopenhauer and Kant, it is instructive, as an introduction to the study Of the foun dations Of the two systems, to determine the respective views Of these philosophers on the subject of pyschology. Excerpt: ... part I. beginnings of the world as will and idea. Chapter I. Schopenhauer's Impersonal World Ground And Its PsychoLogical Basis. "What is this world of perception besides being my idea? Is that of which I am conscious only as idea, exactly like my own body, of which I am doubly conscious, in one aspect as idea, in another aspect as wtllY'1 The world of perception is through and through will. Will is only blind force in nature. In the lowest form of animal life it is impulse without the guiding ideas; but in the higher form of brute creation it develops intellect out of feeling First comes feeling, then sensation, as containing the objective element, and finally perception, the basis of all knowledge. Will is primary and irrational, the world-ground. Intelligence is secondary, but through it will separates itself from feeling and becomes a rational factor, governing itself by ideas instead of being controlled by impulsive emotions. Schopenhauer gives us the reality of the world in action. Only in activity can the will manifest itself as idea, and, in the activity of self-consciousness, the idea becomes a form of knowledge. The knowledge of our body is given in a dual sense. We know it as both will and idea. Other bodies are known only "aS-idea; buTwe attribute to them the inner principle, will, which we have discovered in ourselves. The nature of things is will. In the higher forms of animal life, the will is determined by ideas. In organic life will is moved by stimulation. In organic life it is a mechanical process. "Gnothi seauton!" If we did not know ourselves as will we could not get inside things for a comprehension of nature. Book excerpt: A new 2023 translation from the original German manuscript, with a new Afterword by the Translator. Schopenhauer's "Attempt on Spirit-Seeing and What is Connected with It" delves into the realms of spiritual phenomena and extrasensory perception in response to Kant's "Dreams of a Ghost-Seer". In this work, Schopenhauer analyzes claims of spiritual experiences, such as visions and apparitions, with a critical eye. He examines the human tendency to believe in supernatural occurrences and delves into the psychology behind such beliefs. This work has been a subject of interest for scholars studying the intersection of philosophy and mysticism. Schopenhauer's skepticism towards spirit-seeing and his insistence on empirical evidence have contributed to rational inquiry into paranormal experiences, making this work an essential read for those interested in the intersection of philosophy, psychology, and spirituality. "The whole demonology and spiritology of antiquity and the Middle Ages, as well as their related view of magic, is based on the still unchallenged realism, which was finally shaken by Cartesius. Only the idealism that gradually matured in more recent times leads us to the point of view from which we can reach a correct judgment about all those things, thus also about visions and apparitions of spirits."

Book excerpt: A disciple of Immanuel Kant, Arthur Schopenhauer took the Kantian concept that all knowledge derives from experience and broadened it to conclude that our experience of the world is necessarily subjective and influenced by our own intellect and biases, and that reality is but an extension of our own will. This is the basis of all of Schopenhauer's thinking, and here, he offers an essential foundation for understanding and appreciating all of his work. First produced as his doctoral dissertation in 1813, these two essays-"On the Fourfold Root of the Principle of Sufficient Reason" and "On the Will in Nature"-were revised and published by the author in 1847; this 1889 edition represents its first translation into the English language. Students of philosophy and of 19th-century culture will find this a demanding but satisfying read. The writings of German philosopher ARTHUR SCHOPENHAUER (1788-1860) were a profound influence on art and aesthetics, music and literature in the 19th century. Among his many writings, The World as Will and Idea (1819) is considered his masterpiece.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a detailed reconstruction of the origins of Schopenhauer's philosophy and its inherent aporias. It is divided into four parts. The first section delves into the pietistic upbringing of young Schopenhauer and his introduction to philosophy through the teachings of G.E. Schulze, as well as his study of Plato, Schelling, and Kant. Faced with the "negative" outcomes of Kant's criticism, particularly the unknowability of the thing-in-itself, young Schopenhauer initially engaged with Fichte and Schelling (this is covered in the second part of the volume). However, Schopenhauer formed the opinion that these two philosophers, instead of upholding and expanding upon Kant's ideas, ultimately diverge from them. That notwithstanding, he implicitly inherited certain pivotal concepts from Fichte and Schelling. The third part explores Schopenhauer's initial endeavor to formulate a new metaphysics after Kant, known as the theory of "better consciousness." In the fourth part, the book demonstrates how the internal contradictions within that theory and Schopenhauer's transformative encounter with Indian wisdom (Hinduism and Buddhism) lead him to abandon his first attempt at a system and develop his metaphysics of will. The last and most substantial chapter of the book focuses on the author's analysis of the inherent aporias within Schopenhauer's mature system, approaching them from a genetic perspective.

Book excerpt: ""The World as Will and Idea"" Volume 3 is the third installment of Arthur Schopenhauer's magnum opus, originally published in 1819. In this volume, Schopenhauer further develops his philosophical system, expounding upon the nature of human consciousness, perception, and the will. Building upon the foundation laid in the previous volumes, Schopenhauer delves deeper into his metaphysical theories, examining the relationship between the individual will, the phenomenal world, and the concept of the ""thing-in-itself."" He explores the role of art, aesthetics, and morality as manifestations of the will, offering profound insights into the human condition and the nature of existence. Through rigorous analysis and philosophical inquiry, Schopenhauer challenges conventional notions of reality and consciousness, presenting a comprehensive worldview that continues to influence philosophy, psychology, and literature to this day. ""The World as Will and Idea"" Volume 3 stands as a testament to Schopenhauer's intellectual prowess and enduring legacy in Western thought.

Book excerpt: As composer Richard Wagner noted, with Schopenhauer one may finally give voice to the secretly held belief that the world is bad. This blunt honesty was Schopenhauer's trademark. Perhaps no philosopher equaled him in relatinf metaphysical speculation to the seemingly random events of everyday life. Book excerpt: A new 2023 translation from the original Latin manuscript, with a new Afterword by the Translator. Schopenhauer's seminal autobiographical work, "The Course of Life" (originally printed in Latin as "Cursus Vitae") in1841, is a expose of his metaphysical pessimism, casting light on the ceaseless striving and incessant dissatisfaction which he believes to permeate human existence. This intricate treatise elucidates Schopenhauer's interpretation of the human journey as inherently driven by an insatiable will, painting life's path as an unending cycle of desire, frustration, and ephemeral satisfaction. Notably significant for its strong influence on the philosophies of Nietzsche and existentialism, this work leverages Schopenhauer's characteristic style — combining erudition, clarity, and a flair for aphorism — to compellingly articulate its perspectives, deeply shaping later philosophical thought. As such, "The Course of Life" stands as a cornerstone in Western philosophy, a richly textured discourse on our individual and collective human experiences, a work that rigorously interrogates the nature of our desires, our will, and our ultimate quest for meaning.
