Book excerpt: Critics of intelligence tests writers such as Robert Sternberg, Howard Gardner, and Daniel Goleman have argued in recent years that these tests neglect important qualities such as emotion, empathy, and interpersonal skills. However, such critiques imply that though intelligence tests may miss certain key noncognitive areas, they encompass most of what is important in the cognitive domain. In this book, Keith E. Stanovich challenges this widely held assumption.Stanovich shows that IQ tests (or their proxies, such as the SAT) are radically incomplete as measures of cognitive functioning. They fail to assess traits that most people associate with good thinking, skills such as judgment and decision making. Such cognitive skills are crucial to real-world behavior, affecting the way we plan, evaluate critical evidence, judge risks and probabilities, and make effective decisions. IQ tests fail to assess these skills of rational thought, even though they are measurable cognitive processes. Rational thought is just as important as intelligence, Stanovich argues, and it should be valued as highly as the abilities currently measured on intelligence tests.

And examiners have always been under the reproach of being unable to separate the wit from the clergy they cannot tell us how much of a candidate's success at an examination is due to good brains and how much is due to good opportunities. It is the business of mental tests to remove this reproach. For it is the business of mental tests to extract the element of wit from the compound of wit and clergy. That they do their work imperfectly is readily admitted; but they are doing it better every day; and so important is the task that it is better to do it badly than not to do it at all. There are people who think Otherwise, people who believe that it is better not to do it at all. They say that mental testing is an attempt to bring exactitude into a realm which is essentially vague and indeterminate. They seek refuge in the plea that teaching is not a science, but an art; that the teacher is not a theorist dealing with abstractions, but a craftsman whose workshop is the classroom and whose material is the plastic mind of childhood. But they find no real refuge there; for they are there exposed to the charge of refusing to learn about the material on which they exercise their craft. No other craftsman is so indifferent, or being indifferent would care to confess it. The weaver is curious about his staple and the potter about his clay; for the wares they turn out are in accord with the materials on which they work. And nobody would think of blaming the weaver who failed to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear, or the potter who failed to make a porcelain vase out of a lump of common clay. Indeed he would blame them for trying. And yet it is not so very long ago that the results of teaching little children were all measured by the same scale, and paid for at the same rate, in total disregard of those children's natural gifts. Silk purses and porcelain vases were expected everywhere. The parable of the talents was read on Sundays and forgotten on week-days. Applied to the classroom the parable means that the critic - even if that critic be the teacher himself or the pupil himself - cannot justly judge the fruit of the teacher's labours Without taking 1nto account the fertility Of the field m which he works. They still cannot compare in stability and in standardization, however, with the better established techniques for testing children at higher chronological age levels. The traditional teacher - pupil attitudes which usually carry over and facilitate the testing situation at school-age levels are found to be non existent when one is dealing with children of preschool age. We frequently find in such children dependence on the exam iner for motivation and encouragement and, at the same time, rather startling evidence of independence of thought and activity. There is on the part of the child no conception of being tested, but instead the game aspect of the situation prevails, with all its implications of spontaneity and interest. The very fact that comparatively few small children will remain quietly seated at the testing table throughout the time te quired for a psychological test introduces a problem Of adjust ment to testing techniques and standardization Of procedure which has to be recognized and met. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Condensed Guide for the Stanford Revision of the Binet-Simon Intelligence Tests The Binet-Simon tests had been in use in America for only a few years when their educational value for the blind was recognized by Mr. R. B. Irwin, then Supervisor of the Department for the Blind in the Cleveland public schools. In the summer of 1914 he visited Dr. H. H. Goddard at Vineland, N. J., to discuss the question of adapting them for use with pupils without vision. Taking Goddard's translation of the 1911 edition of the Binet scale as a basis, they struck out those tests which could not be given without the aid of vision, made additions from various sources, and arranged the whole collection of tests in year groups according to Irwin's judgment of the abilities of blind children. In collaboration with Dr. Goddard, Dr. E. A. Doll and Miss Elisabeth S. Kite of Vineland, Irwin was able, during the succeeding year, to have these tests tried out in various homes for blind babies, in residential schools for the blind, and in classes for the blind and the partially-seeing in the public schools. In 1915, Irwin arranged to have Dr. T. H. Haines test the pupils of the Ohio State School for the Blind, and in 1916, Haines published a report upon his use of the year scale and presented a revision of the Yerkes Point Scale adapted to the blind. During the same period, Dr. W. B. Drummond was testing pupils in various schools for the blind in England and Scotland, and in 1920 he published a Binet Scale for the Blind and a Provisional Point Scale for the Blind, building upon the work of Irwin and Haines. Systematic routine testing with Irwin's adaptation had also been started in 1916 by Miss Edith M. Taylor at Perkins Institution for the Blind in Watertown, Massachusetts, and by Miss Katherine Roese at the Pennsylvania Institution for the Instruction of the Blind in Overbrook, Philadelphia. During the next few years all the pupils in eight other residential schools were tested, so that by the end of 1922 the Irwin adaptation had been given to more than 1,600 subjects with defective vision. The data thus accumulated seemed to justify an attempt to standardize the tests and to distribute a Guide for the use of competent persons in schools and clinics, where it might be necessary to examine children who had not vision enough to take the Binet tests in their ordinary form.
