Book Synopsis The Psychological Dieter by : Gregory J. Privitera
Download or read book The Psychological Dieter written by Gregory J. Privitera and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2008 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Psychological Dieter explores a variety of research topics in psychology to explain how diet is acquired and why it is so difficult to change. While many healthier diets on the market will work, few (if any) will provide long-term solutions to healthier dieting. This is a key challenge for research psychologists who study diet and health. Based on scientific research and thinking, this book is one of the first to explore how psychology can help explain why shifting diet is so difficult and provides practical suggestions for what can be done to stop this trend. Professor Privitera integrates research from the biological to the behavioral to provide an easy to follow and broad review of these topics. The Psychological Dieter explores how factors such as metabolism, the brain, sensation, perception, learning, society, and culture all influence weight gain, food choice, meal size, and consumption. Organized into three sections, this book describes how the body regulates hunger and fullness, why diet change is so difficult long-term, and how learning can affect almost any sensation and behavior associated with diet. Rooted in scientific research and clearly written, this book's engaging style makes topics in psychology accessible to scientists, health professionals, and everyday dieters alike.

Download or read book I-Power written by George Dieter and published by Exisle Publishing. This book was released on 2015-08-25 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We all too often look for happiness and contentment via relationships, success and recognition — all things that lie outside ourselves. Underpinned by Boundary Theory, this book illustrates why this approach is actually at the heart of why we end up experiencing unhappiness and discontent. By learning to approach life with a boundary focus, we discover that nobody can ‘make’ us feel or do anything; only we are responsible for how we feel. We also become able to switch our rational brain on, and our emotional brain off, when making decisions or facing challenges. And we are far better placed to minimise stress. By implementing boundaries so that we take responsibility only for ourselves, we will find ourselves able to lessen interpersonal conflict, and greatly enhance our feelings of contentment, fulfilment and balance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book will interest anyone seeking a comprehensive understanding of the psychological relationship between individual psychological dynamics, social structure and the unconscious collective paradigms. It focuses on an analysis of patriarchal culture, which is, as it were, the psychological enclosure in which all individual and collective processes take place. Starting from the genesis and current structure of this culture, the strong social changes of the last 50 years are examined: the change in relations between men and women social relations in terms of solidarity and desolidarisation the situation of social security the social and political power relations, and the economic dynamics. At the same time, collective fantasies are elaborated that emerge from the socio-structural changes. The basis of the study is psychoanalytical cultural theory in the form of a cultural-critical deconstruction of its fundamental assumptions. In 16 interesting chapters, essential questions of psychological cultural theory are answered and practical applications of this theory to current sociostructural processes are shown.

Book Synopsis Dieter's Dilemma by : William Bennett
Download or read book Dieter's Dilemma written by William Bennett and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 1983-08-02 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: A discussion of obesity proposes that weight is physiologically regulated and dieting cannot alter this biological fact. This point is confirmed by the fact that most dieters lose weight only temporarily. Physical activity is the most effective method for decreasing the body's demand for fat. The concept that fatness is a major cause of disease is challenged. The rise in average weight since 1960 has accompanied a decrease in the death rate from cardiovascular disease. Exceptions are diabetes and high blood pressure. Weight control through exercise can be an important treatment. Most motivation to lose weight is based on looking better rather than feeling better. The body's "set point" (normal weight) for fatness is detailed. This point is reinforced by referenced scientific studies. Popular diets and diet books are described. Studies are cited to show that exercise uses calories and also regulates appetite; it is suggested that this lowers the "set point" and is more advantageous than a reducing diet. organizations for fat people are listed. changes in attitudes toward fatness is advocated since most weight reduction regimens are ultimately unsuccessful. Book excerpt: In many ways, the European welfare state constituted a response to the new forms of social fracture and economic turbulence that were born out of industrialization—challenges that were particularly acute for groups whose integration into society seemed the most tenuous. Covering a range of national cases, this volume explores the relationship of weak social ties to poverty and how ideas about this relationship informed welfare policies in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. By focusing on three representative populations—neglected children, the homeless, and the unemployed—it provides a rich, comparative consideration of the shifting perceptions, representations, and lived experiences of social vulnerability in modern Europe.
