Book excerpt: This book contains three books in one; all on the same subject, which is God’s guiding hand in the founding and progress of the United States of America. Book One THE HAND OF GOD IN AMERICAN HISTORY A Study of Divine Providence as Seen in the Life and Mission of a Nation By Wilbur Fisk Tillett, D.D.,LL.D., 1923 Chapter 1: God's Use of Nations Chapter 2: Christopher Columbus, The Christ-Bearer Chapter 3: The Faith of Our Fathers Chapter 4: The Religious Faith and Moral Character of Our Presidents Chapter 5: Our Ethical Idealism and Altruism Chapter 6: What Makes a Nation Great? ------------------------- Book Two THE HAND OF GOD IN AMERICAN HISTORY By: John F. Bigelow 1861 If we look into the History of Nations, we shall find that not a few of them supposed themselves to be the special favorites of Divine Providence. If we inquire also into the state of national feeling, as it now exists in different countries, we shall find, in numbers of them, no lack of present evidences of the same assumption. . . . Does the story of other nations tell of remarkable events, of hairbreadth escapes, of wonderful deliverances, of daring exploits and grand achievements? The annals of the Israelites relate those, the equal of which veritable history nowhere else records, and which the most romantic legend has hardly surpassed. In the case of the American people, as in that of the Jews, we believe that it is no dictate of national vanity, when we claim that God has given us a history unique and peculiar: when we claim that "He hath not so dealt with any nation." Accordingly the subject, on which I propose to address you at this time is, the Hand of God in American History. I. In the first place, let me point you to some of the manifestations and developments of peculiar Providential agency in our historical career. ------------------------- GOD'S HAND IN AMERICA By the Rev. George B. Cheever 1841 1. That God is governor among the nations. 2. That he deals with nations on the same principles as with Individuals. 3. That the responsibilities and duties of nations as individuals, are commensurate with their capabilities, opportunities, and mercies. 4. That the disregard and violation of this principle will be followed with the divine retribution, and if persisted in, must result in national degradation and ruin. 5. That in the light of these principles an enumeration of the elements of national gratitude, is an exceedingly solemn and admonitory service. These propositions may occupy two or three of the following chapters, and afterwards the main subject to which they are introductory will be discussed, viz: The opportunities and responsibilities of this country for its own and the world's evangelization. Here opens that most striking aspect of providence and duty, to which I have referred in the general title of this volume; a title which may be pardoned for its apparent singularity and quaintness, in consideration of its condensed expression of a most comprehensive and important theme.

How can the words God and history still be said in the same sentence? This book surveys important contemporary attempts to talk about God and history, examines why they haven't been successful, and offers a contemporary doctrine of providence that is historically realistic, adequate to religious experience, and grounded in the Christian tradition. The author draws on the philosophical orientation of Alfred North Whitehead and brings it into conversation with liberation and ecological theologies.

Book excerpt: In America's Providential History we examine the history of America from a Christian perspective. Since God is the author of history and he is carrying out his plan in the earth through history, any view of the history of America, or any country, that ignores God is not true history. This is a providential view of history and was held by the vast majority of those people who founded this nation. While we do not look at all the events in America's birth and growth, we do highlight the providence and purposes of God, and the faith of our founders. Understanding this will provide a proper framework in which other historical information can be properly placed. - Introduction.

Book excerpt: p> One Nation under God: the Factual History of America's Religious Heritage is a study of our Founding Fathers-their beliefs, their goals and their history. It uses the direct words of the Founding Fathers from personal letters, personal Bible notes, and many more substantiated sources. The book follows the spiritual direction of our country from the time the Puritans landed in the new world up to today. Our loss of faith in God and how that loss has impacted our society is profiled. It includes quotes from some of the people that had the most influence on the growth of our once great nation and some of the people and events that have caused our nation to decline economically, socially, and morally. One Nation under God includes many landmark court cases that have affected our way of life in the way the American people can worship the Lord in public and in private. The book is a map of our rise to greatness and our decline to the potential oblivion of this once light on the hill for all the world to follow. It also is a guide on how to reclaim our greatness by turning back to God for His forgiveness and guidance. The farther away we move from God the worse our society becomes. I started writing One Nation under God setting out to prove to the country-possibly the world-that we are a Christian nation. ... One Nation Under God helps us remember who we are and what we did and thus helps preserve the American spirit. -David Barton, Historian, Author, TV Producer, founder of Wallbuilders

Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Providence, as Manifested in Scripture, or Facts From Scripture Illustrative of the Government of God Nothing has a greater effect in leading Christians into error than its success. Men in general judge of a cause by its success; and Christians, though they do not recognize it as evidence, yet are often greatly in uenced by it. Opinions spread by infec tion, rather than by a thorough investigation of the evidence. An accurate acquaintance with the ways of Providence, as manifested in Scripture, is calcu lated to' deliver from this prejudice. In the Bible we see that God has often granted much success to his enemies. By this they are hardened in their rebellion. Mere success is no proof of truth; and the want of it is no proof of error. Book excerpt: The national radio host and bestselling author of The American Miracle reveals the happy accidents, bizarre coincidences, and flat-out miracles that continue to shape America’s destiny. “A hopeful message for our troubled times . . . Michael Medved has an eye for a story, and a preternatural gift for telling it in beguiling ways.”—Joseph J. Ellis, Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award–winning author of Founding Brothers Has God withdrawn his special blessing from the United States? Americans ponder that painful question in troubled times, as we did during the devastation of the Civil War and after the assassinations of the ’60s, and as we do in our present polarization. Yet somehow—on battlefields, across western wilderness, and in raucous convention halls—astounding events have reliably advanced America, restoring faith in the Republic’s providential protection. In this provocative historical narrative, Michael Medved brings to life ten haunting tales that reveal this purposeful pattern, including: • A near-fatal carriage accident forces Lincoln’s secretary of state into a canvas-and-steel neck brace that protects him from a would-be assassin’s knife thrusts, allowing him two years later to acquire Alaska for the United States. • A sudden tidal wave of Russian Jewish immigration, beginning in 1881, coincides with America’s rise to world leadership, fulfilling a biblical promise that those blessing Abraham’s children will themselves be blessed. • Campaigning for president, Theodore Roosevelt takes a bullet in the chest, but a folded speech in his jacket pocket slows its progress and saves his life. • At the Battle of Midway, U.S. planes get lost over empty ocean and then miraculously reconnect for five minutes of dive-bombing that wrecks Japan’s fleet, convincing even enemy commanders that higher powers intervened against them. • A behind-the-scenes “conspiracy of the pure of heart” by Democratic leaders forces a gravely ill FDR to replace his sitting vice president—an unstable Stalinist—with future White House great Harry Truman. These and other little-known stories build on themes of The American Miracle, Medved’s bestseller about America’s remarkable rise. The confident heroes and stubborn misfits in these pages shared a common faith in a master plan, which continues to unfold in our time. God’s Hand on America confirms that the founders were right about America’s destiny to lead and enlighten the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this issue of the Free Grace Broadcaster, you will discover the God Who is God—the God Who reigns over every atom in His spectacular universe. Benjamin Beddome introduces us to our Sovereign by showing how His great works of creation and providence are related. David Martyn Lloyd-Jones defines providence by examining its three elements—preservation, government, and concurrence. Then, Arthur W. Pink explains the meaning of the Godhood of God and why it is crucial for Christians to understand it in opposition to the dignity, power, and attainments of man. But what is providence like and from what does it arise, properly understood? William S. Plumer tells us that God’s providence is like God’s nature—holy, just, benevolent, wise, sovereign, stable, and irresistible! Pink then explains so beautifully that God rules everything—all inanimate matter, irrational creatures, human beings, and all angels, good and evil. How can such a lofty doctrine be practical to believers? Joel Beeke gives us sound answers from the infallible Scriptures and from the Puritans. To compliment those answers, Thomas Watson gives biblical instruction in the ways that our sovereign God works all things for good to His eternally loved people. There is one aspect of providence that especially thrills the heart of all believers: how God worked in His sovereign, powerful, and mysterious ways to bring them to saving faith in Christ and to everlasting life! John Flavel reminds us of that astonishing work and the surprising mercies of God’s grace! Lastly, Thomas Reade concludes our subject by filling our souls with a glorious vision of God’s absolute reign by Christ Jesus in our hearts. Articles: Creation & Providence - Benjamin Beddome (1717-1795) - From a Baptist catechism, here is a beautiful and brief introduction to the doctrines of creation and providence and how these distinct works of God relate. Defining Providence - David Martyn Lloyd-Jones (1899-1981) - a survey and description of the three elements of providence: preservation, rule, and concurrence. The Godhood of God - Arthur W. Pink (1886-1952) - This expression has fallen out of use among many modern Christians; so, what does it mean? Answer: The absolute rule of the living God over all things according to His eternal purpose. The Properties of Providence - William S. Plumer (1802-1880) - God’s providential rule arises from God’s glorious character: it is holy, just, benevolent, wise, sovereign, stable, and irresistible. God Rules Everything - Arthur W. Pink (1886-1952) - The one true and living Sovereign governs inanimate matter, irrational creatures, all human beings, and all angels—both good and evil. God's Providence Applied - Joel Beeke - God’s absolute rule over all people, things, and events is the most practical of doctrines for daily life. God is in control! Upon that supreme truth we may take comfort and encouragement every day. All Things Work for Good - Thomas Watson (1620-1686) - a helpful explanation of how every event in the believer’s life is working for his or her eternal good and God’s eternal glory. Providence & Conversion - John Flavel (1627-1691) - Little in the life of believers brings as much joy, comfort, strength, and worship as realizing all that God has done to save them in Jesus Christ. The Lord God Omnipotent - Thomas Shaw B. Reade (1776-1841) - To know God in Christ is to possess all the sources and secrets of true peace in the storms of life and the certainty of everlasting life in the world to come.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How providential history--the conviction that God is an active agent in human history--has shaped the American historical imagination In 1847, Protestant missionary Marcus Whitman was killed after a disastrous eleven-year effort to evangelize the indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest. By 1897, Whitman was a national hero, celebrated in textbooks, monuments, and historical scholarship as the "Savior of Oregon." But his fame was based on a tall tale--one that was about to be exposed. Sarah Koenig traces the rise and fall of Protestant missionary Marcus Whitman's legend, revealing two patterns in the development of American history. On the one hand is providential history, marked by the conviction that God is an active agent in human history and that historical work can reveal patterns of divine will. On the other hand is objective history, which arose from the efforts of Catholics and other racial and religious outsiders to resist providentialists' pejorative descriptions of non-Protestants and nonwhites. Koenig examines how these competing visions continue to shape understandings of the American past and the nature of historical truth.
