This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mainline Protestant churches played a vital role in the settlement of the West. Yet historiansøhave, for the most part, bypassed this theme. This account recreates the unique religious and cultural mix that sets this region apart from the rest of the nation. From itinerant circuit riders to powerful urban bishops, western clergy were continually involved in the maturation of their communities. Their duties on the frontier extended far beyond delivering Sunday sermons; they also served as librarians, counselors, social workers, educators, booksellers, peacekeepers, and general purveyors of culture. Weaving together the varied experiences of men and women from the five major Protestant denominations?Baptist, Methodist, Presbyterian, Congregational, and Episcopal?the author discusses their responses to life on the frontier: the violence, the tumultuous growth of the cities, the isolation of farm life, and the widespread hunger, especially among women, for ?refinement.?

They had heard of a medical practice in Rochester, Minnesota. If anyone could help them, the doctors there could. But would they arrive in time to receive the help they so desperately needed?Ruth spent the first part of her professional life in nursing. Her experience includes operating room, emergency room, poison specialist, and work in a mission hospital in Africa. Ruth has worked with many people, afflicted with this mystery illness. While this illness has been prevalent in many parts of the world for centuries and centuries, to some people the truth about this illness remains a mystery. Ruth closed out her professional life as an ordained pastor, serving as hospital chaplain. In retirement Ruth writes, preaches, and keeps in touch with family and friends by email. Download or read book Frontier Preacher written by Sam Hossler and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-06-19 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book follows the amazing life of John Corbly, circa 1733 to 1803, from the time he was shanghaied in Ireland as a young teenager to the troublesome times of the Whisky Rebellion in frontier Pennsylvania. Once in America, he experiences some good luck. Indentured to a good Christian family, he learns farming, believing it to be his destiny. But those were not God's plans for him, and this unassuming young man eventually becomes a lay preacher and evangelist. Persecuted for his beliefs, he moves his family to the wild frontier of Pennsylvania. Once he reaches this untamed area, like the other frontiersmen, Corbly finds only pain and suffering as crops fail, there is no money, and Indian raids wipe out whole communities in a matter of minutes. The fledgling government has little respect for these rugged frontiersmen. The bureaucrats think this remote province across the mountains is good for only one thing - collecting taxes - that these poor, unfortunate frontier families are not able to pay. More fear and anguish results from the brutal actions of the Federal government who send troops and drag the suspected "insurrectionists" out of their beds in the dead of winter. Yet, through it all, the indefatigable Rev. John Corbly never loses faith, establishes many churches throughout Pennsylvania, and continues to evangelize until his dying breath.

Book excerpt: Women throughout American history have repeatedly been accused of "stepping out of their places" as many have fought for more rewarding roles in the church and society. In this book, Susan Hill Lindley demonstrates that just as religion in the traditional sense has influenced the lives of American women through its institutions, values, and sanctions, so women themselves have had significant effect on the shape of American religion through the years.
Download or read book A Peculiar Glory written by John Piper and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2016-03-16 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: God has provided a way for all people, not just scholars, to know that the Bible is the Word of God. John Piper has devoted his life to showing us that the glory of God is object of the soul’s happiness. Now, his burden in this book is to demonstrate that this same glory is the ground of the mind’s certainty. God’s peculiar glory shines through his Word. The Spirit of God enlightens the eyes of our hearts. And in one self-authenticating sight, our minds are sure and our hearts are satisfied. Justified certainty and solid joy meet in the peculiar glory of God.
Book Synopsis Without Benefit of Clergy by : Karin E. Gedge
Download or read book Without Benefit of Clergy written by Karin E. Gedge and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2003-11-06 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The common view of the nineteenth-century pastoral relationship--found in both contemporary popular accounts and 20th-century scholarship--was that women and clergymen formed a natural alliance and enjoyed a particular influence over each other. In Without Benefit of Clergy, Karin Gedge tests this thesis by examining the pastoral relationship from the perspective of the minister, the female parishioner, and the larger culture. The question that troubled religious women seeking counsel, says Gedge, was: would their minister respect them, help them, honor them? Surprisingly, she finds, the answer was frequently negative. Gedge supports her conclusion with evidence from a wide range of previously untapped primary sources including pastoral manuals, seminary students' and pastors' journals, women's diaries and letters, pamphlets, sentimental and sensational novels, and The Scarlet Letter.
