Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Prometheus and Agamemnon of Aeschylus Translated Into English Verse How highly those tastes were cultivated is evident from the capacity of the people, from the highest to the lowest, to enjoy poetry of such a nature as the Greek dramas, purely ideal, aesthetical, and appealing less directly than that of any other school to tho ordinary tastes or passions of a multitude. To the representation, therefore, of these dramas before an audience at once so large, so fastidiously critical, and so refined, every member of which lived constantly and plied his daily labors in the midst of those masterpieces of sculptural art which in our times are shut up in galleries and enjoyed almost exclusively by the rich, and was thoroughly qualified to pronounce on matters now understood by a few only, a corresponding scale of magnitude and style of magnificence were essential. For dramas, the patrons of which were the immortal Gods, the subjects the deeds of demigods and heroes, and the spectators a nation, theatres were required of colossal proportions. And such were the theatres of the Greeks; gigantic edifices of the most symmetrical design and the most solid materials, capable of accommodating so many as thirty thousand persons, rising tier above tier of marble seats, topped and inclosed by lofty porticos, adorned by statues wrought by such hands as those of Phidias and Myron, surmounted by balustraded terraces, and roofed by the azure vault of heaven. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Prometheus Bound of AEschylus: Literally Translated Into English Verse The reason why the title-page of this book bears the name of an Editor as well as that of a Translator is, that my wife wished for some better guarantee of accuracy than a lady's name could give, and so, rightly or wrongly, looked to me for what she wanted. I have most carefully compared this translation, line by line, with the original, and am not afraid to vouch for its conscientious adherence to the letter of the text. I offer no opinion as to what share of poetic merit it may have, but leave that to critics less biased than myself. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Prometheus Bound of Aeschylus: Rendered Into English Verse It is to be observed that, taken by themselves, none of these models can be altogether followed. In the Elizabethan drama there is much that is deficient in universality, that calls up rufi'led collars and pointed beards-verbal conceits, ephe meral mannerisms. The Hebraic language of the Bible is too primitive, to say nothing Of its dearth Of adjectives, to render the more complex and various language of Greek poetry. The classical constructions of Milton have never become part of English, and would be intolerable at second hand: they would give exactly that cast of cold and conventional unreality, which vitiates what one may call the Eighteenth Century view of Greek antiquity, and which it is one of the main pro-occupations of a translator to avoid. Book excerpt: The Agamemnon Of Aeschylus: Translated Into English Rhyming Verse With Explanatory Notes By Gilbert Murray This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Prometheus Bound of AEschylus One of the features of Greek litera ture is its regular and harmonious development. First comes the rise of the epic; when this form has been thoroughly worked over, lyric poetry expands and becomes predominant; out of the lyric grows the drama and last of all comes the splendid harvest of prose. Yet in one sense the lyric is in Greece, as elsewhere, the mother of all poetical forms. The epos is but a devel Opment and interknitting of the old songs of the minstrels celebrating the deeds of heroes and ancestors; the drama grew directly from the chants, now passionate and now ribald, sung in honor of Dionysus. And in both cases the genius of a single man was so predominant as to establish once and forever the model which all were to follow. What Homer did for epic, Aeschylus accomplished for tragic poetry. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Agamemnon of Aeschylus: Translated Into English Rhyming Verse With Explanatory Notes The sense of difficulty, and indeed of awe, with which a scholar approaches the task of translating the Agamemnon depends directly on its greatness as poetry. It is in part a matter of diction. The language of Aeschylus is an extraordinary thing, the syntax stiff and simple, the vocabulary obscure, unexpected, and steeped in splendour. Its peculiarities cannot be disregarded, or the translation will be false in character. Yet not Milton himself could produce in English the same great music, and a translator who should strive ambitiously to represent the complex effect of the original would clog his own powers of expression and strain his instrument to breaking. But, apart from the diction in this narrower sense, there is a quality of atmosphere surrounding the Agamemnon which seems almost to defy reproduction in another setting, because it depends in large measure on the position of the play in the historical development of Greek literature. If we accept the view that all Art to some extent, and Greek tragedy in a very special degree, moves in its course of development from Religion to Entertainment, from a Service to a Performance, the Agamemnon seems to stand at a critical point where the balance of the two elements is near perfection. The drama has come fully to life, but the religion I has not yet faded to a formality. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. All hail!--What ho, within! What ho! Bear word to Agamemnon's queen To rise, like dawn, and lift in answer strong To this glad lamp her women's triumph-song, If verily, verily, Ilion's citadel Is fallen, as yon beacons flaming tell. And I myself will tread the dance before All others; for my master's dice I score Good, and mine own to-night three sixes plain. [_Lights begin to show in the Palace_. In the sequel the poet had the opportunity of representing Zeus as grand, benevolent, and generous, having learnt much by length of rule, and having passed from a tyrant into the wearer of a time - honoured crown and, coming last, this side of the picture would leave the deepest impression. In the Prometheus Bound we hear of the tyranny of Zeus chiefly from those who suffer from it. Neither Zeus himself, nor any of the greater Olympian Gods, appear upon the stage and it is open to us to suppose that his tyranny may have been even necessary in the age of general violence from which it had just emerged.
