Book excerpt: From the point of view of economic history, the ideal way to study any institution of commercial law would be to compare the information contained in legal codes and treatises with the material relating to its application in economic life as manifested by actual contracts, letters, and business records found in archives and other repositories. In the case of the early centuries of the Islamic period, available sources unfortunately preclude such a procedure. Theoretical legal texts exist in abundance, but any corresponding documentary material is for all practical purposes non-extant. In order to determine if the framework in which the trade and commerce of the early Islamic period was carried on--a trade known to have been active and important--we must of necessity rely on legal treatises for most of our information, which trying wherever possible to call upon whatever meager help other literary sources may provide. In the absence of documentary and similar sources, the possibility of investigating the quantitative aspects of trade is all but eliminated. However, in those areas of trade which have been described as qualitative, such as the variety of goods exchanged, the specialization of the merchant class, and the complexity of business methods, legal and other literary sources provide a great deal of valuable information. It is with the institutions of partnership and commenda in the early Islamic period, two of the qualitative components of trade, that Abraham L. Udovitch makes his primary focus in Partnership and Profit in Medieval Islam.

Book excerpt: Author of cult classics The Pumpkin Plan and The Toilet Paper Entrepreneur offers a simple, counterintuitive cash management solution that will help small businesses break out of the doom spiral and achieve instant profitability. Conventional accounting uses the logical (albeit, flawed) formula: Sales - Expenses = Profit. The problem is, businesses are run by humans, and humans aren't always logical. Serial entrepreneur Mike Michalowicz has developed a behavioral approach to accounting to flip the formula: Sales - Profit = Expenses. Just as the most effective weight loss strategy is to limit portions by using smaller plates, Michalowicz shows that by taking profit first and apportioning only what remains for expenses, entrepreneurs will transform their businesses from cash-eating monsters to profitable cash cows. Using Michalowicz's Profit First system, readers will learn that: · Following 4 simple principles can simplify accounting and make it easier to manage a profitable business by looking at bank account balances. · A small, profitable business can be worth much more than a large business surviving on its top line. · Businesses that attain early and sustained profitability have a better shot at achieving long-term growth. With dozens of case studies, practical, step-by-step advice, and his signature sense of humor, Michalowicz has the game-changing roadmap for any entrepreneur to make money they always dreamed of.

Book excerpt: Starting a business venture is a great way of putting structure into a hobby, which in turn can become great fun, a good way to meet new people and of course, if you are lucky, it's a great way to make money too. This new Bite-Sized Book about Partnerships builds on that message by explaining how and why you might best use partnerships to your advantage, explores some reasons for making the effort in the first place and of course points out pitfalls observed first hand over the years. In some cases these are in the form of statistics. Stuart Haining has been involved in over 160 business relationships for various reasons (and this doesn't even include the numerous additional normal work colleagues), which is a surprisingly large figure - so he probably has more than enough data on which to base some conclusions on the maths of partnerships alone. He also includes some brilliant examples of things that have gone well or otherwise for him and people he knows in business. To some people the very idea that you need a partnership will come as a surprise - but it should be a pleasant surprise as if you create the right partnerships with the right people, who complement your capabilities, it can immensely strengthen your chances of success - and take away some of the loneliness of creating a new business. Those people who know Stuart's other books, including "The Practical Digital Marketeer," "Planet Amazon" and his tales about owning an Aston Martin, "My Other Car is an Aston," will already know his irreverent style, his focus on what you need to be successful and his sense of fun - and this book carries on that tradition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are you identifying the right deals and making them profitable? Or are you haggling over who gets the biggest piece of the pie, rather than working out how to make the pie bigger? This book will help you identify, develop and safeguard added value, which means that both businesses in the partnership can develop and grow with reduced risk. Not just any partner and not just any deal will do. An international study based on over 20,000 negotiations revealed that a huge amount of time is wasted on producing deals that are often of only marginal merit. This book will help you identify the deals which are worth doing and set you on the right track to make them profitable. "Negotiating Partnerships" will take you through dozens of areas where additional value can be found, to make win-win partnership deals that really work for you. You will learn how to identify opportunities and conclude better deals at the same time as making the other party feel good. This book sets out key steps to co-operative negotiation so that you have the know-how to achieve profitable partnerships. The partnering process is one that makes sense in any line of business from online retail to manufacturing via everything in between. As the business environment becomes tougher, and margins are continually shaved this book will help you maintain and grow your existing profit. In all cases, a partnership should provide better solutions than those currently available to each party separately. With this book you can achieve partnerships, which reduce costs and risks, improve earnings and at the same time reap the benefit of each other's experience, creativity and contacts. Yes, it is important for theother party in a partnership to be satisfied. But it is your job as a negotiator to try to ensure that you can keep to yourself most of the added value created. This book will help you through this process so that you find and retain good and valuable partnerships.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From bestselling author Bob Glazer comes a revolutionary approach to partnership marketing. Partnership marketing is not new; it has existed in many different forms, and under many different names, such as affiliate marketing, for decades. However, thanks to transformative changes in enabling technology and pricing models, as well as a change in both supply and demand, partnership marketing now exists in a more automated, scalable form that few companies have fully leveraged to date. MOVING TO OUTCOMES will unlock the keys and show readers how to do so for themselves. Think about your marketing strategy as you would consider an investment portfolio. Every investment guru advises diversifying your stock market assets to protect against declines in some types of assets. Additionally, if you want better returns, you need to adjust your holdings through diversification and get outside of the traditional asset classes. Once an asset class reaches maturity and ubiquity, you are much less likely to see above-average returns. Investors can't beat the market by investing in the biggest names of today; instead, they need to find the next Microsoft, Amazon, or Tesla. Marketers today have a choice. They can keep doubling down on advertising with the digital goliaths of today or begin to diversify and invest in other marketing channels, with an eye toward the future.
