Book excerpt: Nitric oxide (NO) is a gas that transmits signals in an organism. Signal transmission by a gas that is produced by one cell and which penetrates through membranes and regulates the function of another cell represents an entirely new principle for signaling in biological systems. NO is a signal molecule of key importance for the cardiovascular system acting as a regulator of blood pressure and as a gatekeeper of blood flow to different organs. NO also exerts a series of other functions, such as acting a signal molecule in the nervous system and as a weapon against infections. NO is present in most living creatures and made by many different types of cells. NO research has led to new treatments for treating heart as well as lung diseases, shock, and impotence. Scientists are currently testing whether NO can be used to stop the growth of cancerous tumors, since the gas can induce programmed cell death, apoptosis. This book is the first comprehensive text on nitric oxide to cover all aspects--basic biology, chemistry, pathobiology, effects on various disease states, and therapeutic implications. - Edited by Nobel Laureate Louis J. Ignarro, editor of the Academic Press journal, Nitric Oxide - Authored by world experts on nitric oxide - Includes an overview of basic principles of biology and chemical biology - Covers principles of pathobiology, including the nervous system, cardiovascular function, pulmonary function, and immune defense
Book Synopsis Paul J. Crutzen: A Pioneer on Atmospheric Chemistry and Climate Change in the Anthropocene by : Paul J. Crutzen
Download or read book Paul J. Crutzen: A Pioneer on Atmospheric Chemistry and Climate Change in the Anthropocene written by Paul J. Crutzen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-15 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains texts by the Nobel laureate Paul J. Crutzen who is best known for his research on ozone depletion. It comprises Crutzen’s autobiography, several pictures documenting important stages of his life, and his most important scientific publications. The Dutch atmospheric chemist is one of the world’s most cited scientists in geosciences. His political engagement makes him a tireless ambassador for environmental issues such as climate change. He popularized the term ‘Anthropocene’ for the current geological era acknowledging the enduring influence of humankind on planet Earth. This concept conceives humans to be a geologic factor, influencing the evolution of our globe and the living beings populating it. The selection of texts is representing Paul Crutzen ́s scientific oeuvre as his research interests span from ozone depletion to the climatic impacts of biomass burning, the consequences of a worldwide atomic war – the Nuclear Winter - to geoengineering and the Anthropocene.
Book Synopsis Theoretical Temperature Distribution in the Precursor Region Ahead of Projectiles Traveling at Hypersonic Velocities by : Wallace Henry Clay
Download or read book Theoretical Temperature Distribution in the Precursor Region Ahead of Projectiles Traveling at Hypersonic Velocities written by Wallace Henry Clay and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An attempt is made to obtain order-of-magnitude estimates of the radiant intensity profiles for the precursor region of a gas, ahead of a hypervelocity shock wave. An approximate expression for the temperature distribution in the precursor is derived for the case where gamma is very large. The parameter, gamma, appears in the nondimensionalization of the flow equations. The importance of radiative heat transfer relative to convective heat transfer is characterized by the size of gamma. The approximation for the temperature is then used to predict the radiant intensity profile in the precursor for a specific example. The values of the parameters used for the calculation were chosen from a prior experiment in which the profile was measured. (Author).

Book Synopsis Molecular Physics and Hypersonic Flows by : M. Capitelli
Download or read book Molecular Physics and Hypersonic Flows written by M. Capitelli and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 798 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Molecular Physics and Hypersonic Flows bridges the gap between the fluid dynamics and molecular physics communities, emphasizing the role played by elementary processes in hypersonic flows. In particular, the work is primarily dedicated to filling the gap between microscopic and macroscopic treatments of the source terms to be inserted in the fluid dynamics codes. The first part of the book describes the molecular dynamics of elementary processes both in the gas phase and in the interaction with surfaces by using quantum mechanical and phenomenological approaches. A second group of contributions describes thermodynamics and transport properties of air components, with special attention to the transport of internal energy. A series of papers is devoted to the experimental and theoretical study of the flow of partially ionized gases. Subsequent contributions treat modern computational techniques for 3-D hypersonic flow. Non-equilibrium vibrational kinetics are then described, together with the coupling of vibration-dissociation processes as they affect hypersonic flows. Special emphasis is given to the interfacing of non-equilibrium models with computational fluid dynamics methods. Finally, the last part of the book deals with the application of direct Monte Carlo methods in describing rarefied flows.
