Book excerpt: The word prosody of Tokyo Japanese is often labeled as pitch accent, and is characterized by a steep fall in F0 from the accented mora into the following unaccented mora. The description of Japanese pitch accent in earlier research was primarily based on the observation of a small set of minimal pairs that differed only by pitch accent, and its bearing on the perception of pitch accent was not clear. This book attempts to overcome these limitations by conducting production and perception experiments using a larger set of minimal pairs. It first examines whether earlier descriptions of Japanese pitch accent hold generally true in Japanese by thoroughly searching minimal pairs in an electronic database. It then conducts a perception study to examine whether acoustic differences found between the minimal pairs are used by listeners in word identification. The results show that some acoustic properties related to pitch accent were not used in auditory identification, underscoring the need to look at both production and perception in studying speech. This volume also includes a short review on the literature of Japanese pitch accent. The book is ideal for those interested in the issues related to phonetics and the perception of accent and word prosody.

Book excerpt: This thesis reports on the results of production and perception experiments which investigated the nature of lexical accent in Tokyo Japanese (simply Japanese hereafter). Word prosody of Japanese is often labeled as pitch accent, characterized by a steep fall in F 0 from the accented mora to the following one. Words that have accent on the final-mora (final-accented words) and words that have no accent (unaccented words) apparently have the same tone sequence, yet they differ in that a particle has a surface low tone after final-accented words while it has a high tone after unaccented words. It has been debated whether the two accent patterns are identical when they occur in isolation, and whether the tone on the following particle is the only acoustic correlate of pitch accent. In the present study, a computerized database was used to search for all bimoraic and disyllabic minimal pairs of final-accented and unaccented words in Japanese. Because word familiarity is known to influence word recognition and production, only words with a relatively high familiarity rating were used, resulting in 20 minimal pairs. Ten native Japanese speakers (five males and females) produced the 20 pairs in isolation and sentence-medially followed by a particle. The production study found that, when the two types of words were produced in isolation, they were not significantly different in either their F 0 peak in the second mora or their F 0 rise from the first to second mora. When the words were produced sentence-medially, there was a significant difference within words, both in F 0 peak and F 0 rise. There was also a greater fall in F 0 into the following particle for final-accented words. In the perception experiment, recordings from the production study were used to create three sets of stimuli: (A) final-accented and unaccented words produced in isolation, (B) final-accented and unaccented words excised from a sentence, and (C) words and the following particle excised from a sentence. The listeners (n=23) were not able to identify words under conditions (A) or (B). Thus even though the stimuli type B differed in F 0 peak and F 0 rise, these acoustic properties were not sufficient for listeners to identify the words. Furthermore, the accuracy was only about 80 percent even when there was a following particle (stimuli type C). However, a strong positive correlation was found between the accuracy and the size of F 0 fall difference between the two accent patterns in each pair, suggesting that F 0 fall played an important role in perceiving accent. Thus, while accent information was redundantly present in F 0 peak, F 0 rise, and F 0 fall of words produced in sentence context, listeners appear to use only the F0 fall into the following particle for word identification.

Book excerpt: This study reports on Japanese accentuation by non-native speakers (NNSs) of Japanese from the viewpoints of second language acquisition and implicit brain perception. The major focus was on the interlanguage strategies in their production of accentuation, their style-shifting of accentuation in comparison with that of Ibaraki dialect speakers (IBSs) of Japanese, their language management study of accentuation and the automatic brain perception of auditory accent patterns. The study used two major methods. One involved analyses of each participant's accentuation in natural discourse data, which is different from the general research on accentuation which focuses on the distinct use of an individual word. The second method involved examination of participants' brainwaves as measured without participants' attention to the stimulus sound of accent patterns, after which the mismatch negativity component (MMN) was analysed. The MMN provides the possibility of examining automatic brain responses to the auditory pitch patterns of accentuation. First, NNS participants' production of accentuation in discourse was investigated. Three types of interlanguage strategies (ILSs) of accentuation appeared to be produced on the basis of L2 norms, showing three developmental stages as well as free variations without conscious attention to the accentuation. On the other hand, participants also demonstrated the application of antepenultimate accent strategies and compound accent strategies, which appeared to be produced on the basis of universal norms. Thus, the accentuation of the same participants in the same discourse showed overlapping strategies on the basis of both the L2 and universal norms. Second, the style-shifting of accentuation between formal and informal situations is analysed and compared with that of the IBSs, who produce interdialect strategies (lOSs) showing strong resemblance to ILSs by NNSs of Japanese. It was found that both the NNSs and the Ibaraki dialect speakers showed systematic style-shifting of accentuation without explicit attention, although their style-shifting showed distinctly different characteristics. Third, since language management involves explicit conscious processes, the question of whetherNNSs manage their accentuation in discourse is analysed on the basis of follow-up interviews. The following finding was observed: two of 11 participants managed their accentuation explicitly, although most of their management did not proceed to the implementation stage, and therefore, it was considered to be 'weak management'. It is presumed that they began to manage their accentuation, then stopped during the process and finally subconsciously produced ILSs. Lastly, the implicit processing of the two types of accentual pitch patterns in the brains of both NNS and NS participants was investigated by means of brainwave measurement, and the MMN was analysed. The results revealed the implication that both the NNSs and NSs implicitly noted accent patterns, and the unaccented pattern LHH was likely to be responded to as unnatural by both NNSs and NSs, presumably due to the influence of the pitch downtrend phenomenon observed in many languages. The results of this study, particularly the participants' implicit observations and the distinction of accent patterns in their brains, provide theoretical implications for studieson Japanese accentuation in SLA and neuronal correlates of pitch patterns in neuroscience, for example, the levelling of accent like 'specialists' accentuation' appears to be caused by the brain response to the feature of 'unnaturalness' of unaccented pattern. The discourse analyses also suggest new findings related to the influence of universal norms on the production of strategies for second language acquisition. The application ofthe findings to the teaching of accentuation in Japanese language education is also discussed.

Book excerpt: The results revealed that for L1 Japanese speakers, who were very accurate at the correctness-judgment task, acoustic sensitivity predicted perception accuracy. Despite possessing robust knowledge of the phonological properties of their L1, this finding suggests that a basic cognitive resource is still active in L1 accent perception. With the advanced learners, two factors were significantly related to their ability to perceive accent - L1 background and L2 lexicon size. On the other hand, for beginning learners, who were still actively acquiring Japanese, the two basic cognitive resources predicted which individuals made the largest gains in perceptual ability over a semester of study. Thus, for L2 Japanese learners, I posit an acoustic-to-lexical continuum for accent acquisition, whereby beginners are reliant on memory and basic acoustic sensitivity to support their listening performance. However, as I observed with the advanced group, learners increasingly rely on their long-term knowledge of L2 word form in perceiving lexical accent. The pedagogical application of these results is discussed in terms of the increased use of form-focused correction of accent and visual supplements in the language classroom to aid lower-capacity learners' perceptual development.
