Book Synopsis The Problems of Philosophy by : John Grier Hibben
Download or read book The Problems of Philosophy written by John Grier Hibben and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-24 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This philosophy book is a perfect introduction for anyone interested in the subject. The central theme of the book is discussion of the big questions (the "Problems" of the title) which philosophy strives to answer. There are other philosophy books with similar titles, including an identically titled book by the famous philosopher Bertrand Russell (also available from Forgotten Books and well worth a look), but this one contains arguably the best introduction to the broadest range of philosophical thought. John Grier Hibben, was broadly educated and seemed to excel at anything he turned his hand to. He graduated as a mathematician, earned a living teaching French and German and was for many years a widely respected preacher. After gaining a PhD he taught philosophy at Princeton and later became its president. The first two chapters of this book discuss the nature and value of philosophy. In the words of Hibben, "Philosophy is concerned with what is, in contrast with that which seems to be." The grand Problem then is to "discover the nature of reality." The other chapters cover discussions of existence, origins, the soul (whether as in the religious meaning or the sum of a consciousness), knowledge, logic, ethics (and it's sub-Problem, politics, or human relations) and finally of art and aesthetics. These are all covered in detail and with a great explanation, comparison and discussion of the different schools of thought, which is what makes this book so fascinating as an introduction to philosophy. If this book has a flaw it is that the different forms of religious thought are given too much attention in comparison to other philosophies, which may not be so interesting for the less religious times in which we now live. There is still plenty here for even the most ardent atheist however. The beauty of the writing is that even though the author is obviously deeply intelligent and knowledgeable about his topic the text remains accessible and the explanations clear and jargon-free. Book Synopsis Theory and Reality by : Peter Godfrey-Smith
Download or read book Theory and Reality written by Peter Godfrey-Smith and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2021-07-16 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does science work? Does it tell us what the world is “really” like? What makes it different from other ways of understanding the universe? In Theory and Reality, Peter Godfrey-Smith addresses these questions by taking the reader on a grand tour of more than a hundred years of debate about science. The result is a completely accessible introduction to the main themes of the philosophy of science. Examples and asides engage the beginning student, a glossary of terms explains key concepts, and suggestions for further reading are included at the end of each chapter. Like no other text in this field, Theory and Reality combines a survey of recent history of the philosophy of science with current key debates that any beginning scholar or critical reader can follow. The second edition is thoroughly updated and expanded by the author with a new chapter on truth, simplicity, and models in science.

Download or read book Substance written by Joshua Hoffman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-02-07 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Substance has been a leading idea in the history of Western philosophy. Joshua Hoffman and Gary S. Rosenkrantz explain the nature and existence of individual substances, including both living things and inanimate objects. Specifically written for students new to this important and often complex subject, Substance provides both the historical and contemporary overview of the debate. Great Philosophers of the past, such as Aristotle, Descartes, Spinoza, Leibnitz, Locke, and Berkeley were profoundly interested in the concept of substance. And, the authors argue, a belief in the existence of substances is an integral part of our everyday world view. But what constitutes substance? Was Aristotle right to suggest that artefacts like tables and ships don't really exist? Substance: Its Nature and Existence is one of the first non-technical, accessible guides to this central problem and will be of great use to students of metaphysics and philosophy.

Book Synopsis Problems from Philosophy by : James Rachels
Download or read book Problems from Philosophy written by James Rachels and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-06-11 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Problems from Philosophy is an introductory text organized around the great philosophical problems―the existence of God, the nature of the mind, human freedom, the limits of knowledge, and the truth about ethics. It begins by reflecting on the life of the first great philosopher, Socrates. Then it takes up the fundamental question of whether God exists. Next comes a discussion of death and the soul, which leads to a chapter about persons. The later chapters consider whether objective knowledge is possible in science and ethics. Problems from Philosophy represents the final work of philosopher James Rachels. In it, he brings the same liveliness and clarity to the introduction of philosophy present in his many other best-selling texts. Problems from Philosophy has been revised by James Rachels’ son Stuart, who has carefully refined his father’s work to further strengthen its clarity and accessibility. The fourth edition features revisions on discussions of free will, artificial intelligence, idealism, and Kantian ethics.
