Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Problem of War and Its Solution The intention behind these pages is to demolish this fatalistic doctrine and to substitute a reasonable theory more in accordance with the facts. As might be expected, once the real factors of the problem are known the solution is at hand for those who are not dismayed by the bogies of tradition. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great Cycle: The Solution of the Problem of War, an Abridgement of the Manuscript in Five Volumes, Bearing the Title of the World Question and Its Answer The prevailing war differs from all past wars. It involves the nations of Europe no less than Asia and of North, Central and South America. It incorporates in its activities the great continents of Australasia and Africa and their islands. It, in short, compasses the whole world, and is properly called the World War. The world, therefore, being at war, if we look to see what this means, we shall perceive that it is really the human race that is at war. Now, since war consists of combat, and since combat entailsthe active presence Of contestants, so, in order that a contest may exist, there must be some Object which, in the minds of the contend ers, constitutes an issue. There is, therefore, in this war somewhere an issue, but where it is the world does not understand. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The War: Its Causes and Consequences The age is revolutionary. The present is an epoch in the world's history of transition - a sort of moral exodus of the nations - which has lasted now some three centuries; and no stability in governments anywhere, much less here, can be looked for until the passage from the old regime to the new has been completed. To a close observer, the social ebullition in this coun try has long been of a threatening character. From the birth of our government, its elements have been in an uneasy state; and the bosom of society has more than once been agitated by the throes of coming convulsions. The time has arrived for these inevitable disturbances, so long concealed, to manifest their dangerous activity. An open rupture is at last reached; and however it may be allayed temporarily, will be again and again renewed until the foundations of society are broken up, or the principles which now lie at its base are extruded, or so modified by the introduction of others that their excesses will be entirely counteracted. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Vital Issues of the War The first seven sermons in this volume were preached on successive Sundays in April and May and the eighth in September of the present year. Now that the church seems, in the eyes of many, to have fallen from the high esteem in which it was held by a former generation, no doubt a volume of sermons, even on "The Vital Issues of the War," runs grave risk of not being read. Since the war began, however, sharp criticism has been visited upon the pulpit for evading the discussion of its compelling moral and spiritual problems; it needs, therefore, to be made known that all pulpits, to say the least, have not deserved the reproach of failing to utilize this unique opportunity. So my book goes forth, quite without apology, for what it is - the messages of a preacher to his people in the regular course of his ministry, printed as they were delivered, with only the slight revision desirable for publication. Such utterances inevitably reflect a point of view determined in part by the time at which they were spoken. In this they are in nowise exceptional. Magazine articles, or the chapters of a book, must be finished sometime, and must bear internal evidences of their date of composition. Later impressions, especially of the swiftly-moving panorama of a world-war, would modify certain details. Thus, one could not speak now with as much optimism of the Bolshevik rule in Russia as was possible when Sermon IV was preached last April. Still, I have decided to let the sermon stand, as perhaps an over-sympathetic interpretation of the obscure strivings of the Russian democracy, the final outcome of which is still far from apparent. In such a case, one would rather err by undue generosity than by cold-blooded cynicism, which the sermon was intended to rebuke. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Problems of the War, Vol. 2: Papers Read Before the Society in the Year 1916 The Grotius Society has now entered upon the second year of its activity, and has, it is hoped, established its position among societies devoted to the study of the Law of Nations. The war unhappily continues, and restoration to normal conditions of peace is at the present moment by no means within view. The first volume of the papers read before the Society was published, under the title Problems of the War, at the beginning Of last year, and had a gratifying circulation, and the present volume contains, with one exception, papers discussed by it since that date. The exception is the article on The Treatment of Alien Enemies, by Sir Ernest Satow, which, though read to members of the Society in 1915, was antecedent to our actual foundation. This article, moreover, as well as the one on War Crimes by Dr. Bellot, have already been published elsewhere by the authors, as mentioned above in the Preface. Nevertheless it has been thought proper to include them in the present volume, not only on account of their intrinsic merits, but as Strictly belonging to the Transactions of the Society. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The War and Our Social Problems T is at a time of strain that we can best con sider the deep-lying tendencies which run through social development, just as it is at a time of national anxiety that we can best discover to what an extent religion still retains its hold on the people. The pleasant ness of peace allures us from year to year to forgetfulness. We are easy and confident. The day brings its work and evening its guerdon of release. Great movements ultimately affecting the social organism are in process, but they operate so slowly that we fail to appreciate them. To-day these movements are visible, for events follow upon events with appalling rapidity. Our nation has entered into a dreadful struggle with high emprise. But so severe is the struggle and so wide 5. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It is not for that reason that of these young men are now fighting for the Allies on the Von Hindenberg line. It is not for that reason that thousands more have been succoring the wounded behind the lines in France. It is not for that reason that an American Commission has been devoting its time, its strength and its energy towards succoring enslaved and starving Belgium. Ah! No, my friends, desire for vengeance is not the impelling motive of American action. There is a far deeper cause than that for our sympathy with one side in this great struggle. It is because we realize that upon the battlefields of Europe there is at stake the future of the free institutions of this world. It is because we feel and know that should the tide of that bloody struggle turn against the Allies the cause of democracy - even here in far-off America - would go down with them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Problems of the War, Vol. 1: Papers Read Before the Society in the Year 1915 The Grotius Society is intended to be restricted, as regards membership, to British subjects; it is to be a purely British Society. In this respect it will follow the example of the Associa tion of International Law in the United States, which has an established position in that country and has done good work. Our Rules, however, enable us to elect, as occasion offers, foreign international lawyers as honorary and corresponding members, and also to invite non-members to read papers to us and take part in our discussions on proper introduction. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Causes of War, Including an Outline and Study of the World War and Official Peace Negotiations There was also recognized the need, well nigh universal up to the very present, of a brief suggestive course in book form, for the study of the Great War, - its background, progress and issues, and the peace outlook, which would be suitable for the'busy student and the busy citizen, who are simply bewildered in the great mass of unorganized material that confronts them, - and that this should be adapted to the schoolroom as well as the home. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The War and Its Lessons The American struggle for Nationality, which commenced with the downfall of Fort Sumter, marks an era in the history of civilization, as critical as any the world has ever witnessed. Those who are agitated by the actual contacts and immediate perils of civil war have scarce had opportunity to measure the immensity of interests involved; but those who are calmly examining the worlds Present by the worlds Past, and by all the principles and illustrations which facts, reason and experience may furnish, are solemnly and weightily impressed with the conviction that we are engaged in transactions which, for weal or wo, are to tell immensely on all that relates to morals, liberty, government and law. The epoch is one for which we need to arouse all the energies of the body, the intellect and the soul, that as true men of a trying age, we may be equal to the emergencies, which in the course of events, have fallen on our times. The part already enacted, has been upon no ordinary scale. At the very commencement of the conflict ominous clouds hovered over our political horizon. Wise men quaked because of fear, and strong men strung their nerves to a higher key, feeling that we were on the verge of a conflict which involved the interests of themselves, their country, their posterity, and all that related to the welfare of civil and religious liberty all over the broad earth. Traitors, with stealthy hand, had been loosing the cords and unbraiding the strands of our strength until it almost seemed as if the grand cable of American power had dwindled to a thread. But slender as it appeared, the central, close-woven braid of republican Nationality was not yet sundered.
