Wherever there is vital interaction between a mind and its world there is real education. Edu cative power is, thus, broadly distributed. Its centres of influence are the social institutions school, home, church, vocation, and neighbor hood life. Together they bear the total work of training men, with all the economy and efficiency which comes through a division of labor. In pro portion to the relative strength and weakness of their structures, they supplement and reinforce one another. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vocational Education But the great social movements of our time have finally brought to us unmistakable demands for democratic and efficient systems Of vocational education. Heretofore such school vocational education as we have had has been aristo cratic for the leaders it was claimed; and non-school vocational education has been haphazard, unorganized, and deplorably lacking in efficiency. What we call the contemporary movement for vocational education is in stark simplicity the result Of an enormous social demand for schools for the vocational education of the rank and file Of workers. Schools Of professional educa tion for the training of leaders we have long had but corporate effort has, until almost yesterday, balked at the problem of providing training schools for workers who toil in the unexalted callings of mine, farm, forest, shop, factory, shipboard, and home. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vocational Education: Its Theory, Administration and Practice; The Problem of Vocational Education; The People's School: A Study in Vocational Training; The Improvement of Rural Schools American public education is confronted by problems growing out of public demands for the enrichment and improvement of types of instruction already well established in high and elementary schools; but it also faces a variety of new problems involved in the current social demands for forms of education not hitherto generally carried on in schools. Vocational education is one of these new problems. Almost every agency, in any way identified with the improvement of social conditions, voices, to-day, a demand for better vocational education. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vocational Schools The spirit and purpose behind the definite plans and policies out lined by the wording Of the law and in the rules and regulations Of the Commissioner Of Education with reference to the organization and conduct Of such instruction are based upon the theory that the local community and the State have entered into a joint partner ship for the purpose Of securing an effective scheme Of vocational training such as will justify State aid under the law. The amount Of the aid over and above the amount apportioned toward the support Of general education clearly implies that pro visions for vocational instruction have been written into the Educa tion Law Of the State for distinct and definite purposes apart from those Of general education. Vocational education differs from the general education Of the ordinary school in that its controlling pur pose is to fit its pupils to a greater or less degree for certain forms Of profitable employment in the industries, in agriculture and in the household. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The People's School: A Study in Vocational Training The Object of this book will be to explain why, in the Opinion of the author, the attendance in our upper grades is so small in what points our schools fail to meet the needs of our people; and how the course Of instruction may be made more practical and thus hold children in school until such time as they are better trained for citizen ship. It will also attempt to place the movement for trade education in relation to other social movements of the day. This discussion will be illustrated by a comparison with foreign methods, based on personal investigations of French and German schools. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vocational Education, Compulsory Part-Time Education: Information for the Use of Teachers, School Authorities, Employers of Youth, and the General Public, February, 1920 Since the field of compulsory part-time education is undeveloped, experience has little to offer us in the solution of the problem. Much of the material composing this bulletin has therefore been drawn from the educational and general social experiences of the writers. This bulletin has been hurriedly prepared; therefore, it may lack many desired refinements of organization. It is intended primarily for the use of those preparing to teach part-time classes. It will, however, be useful to superintendents of schools, boards of education, principals, teachers, and the employers of youth who are subject to the compulsory Part-time Education Act. The bulletin has been prepared by Maude I. Murchie, State Supervisor of Home Economics Instruction; J. B. Lillard, State Supervisor of Agricultural Instruction; and the Commissioner of Vocational Education. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Federal Aid for Vocational Education: A Report to the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching Entirely apart from the wisdom or unwisdom of this appropriation of money by the federal government, it is important that the people of the United States should understand clearly what is being done. More and more the money of the federal treas ury is being sought for educational projects of one kind or another in the separate states. In the long run there Will come undoubtedly some demand for a more direct supervision of education by the federal authority. If this policy is to be entered upon, it should be taken up with a clear conception of what it means. Perhaps no circumstance of the original Morrill legislation was more remarkable than the entire absence of any educational conception as to what sort of colleges were to be created out of the money supplied by the central government. Indeed, a large proportion of the members of Congress did not expect institutions of college grade. This whole legislation, - so momentous in its consequences, resulting in the establish ment of institutions throughout all the states, - primarily educational in its s00pe and in its consequences, was carried out from the beginning to the end with almost no consideration of the educational problems involved. It is not too much to say that for the first fifty years of their existence the colleges thus established did very little to advance the interests of agriculture or to minister to the needs of the young men and young women on the farm. It is only within the last few years that they have addressed themselves directly to this problem. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Roots of Vocational Education, 1931: A Survey of the Origins of Trade and Industrial Education Found in Industry, Education, Legislation and Social Progress America today is one of the foremost Of industrial nations. Among the other nations of the world few can compete with it in the quantity and quality of industrial products. Even after the domestic wants have been satisfied, America can produce to such an extent that foreign markets can be supplied, if not dominated. In reaching this pinnacle Of industrial supremacy, America has undergone tremendous changes since its discovery. From a vast trackless wilderness in the sixteenth century it has reached a position in the twentieth century comparable, if not superior, to the positions held by the more advanced of the ancient na tions of Europe. The great changes which have occurred have been felt in all spheres of America's activities. Industry, politics, education, religion, philosophy, and social life have evolved in this short space in an amazing manner. Even today change is ever tak ing place. A cross section of the schools of modern America presents a vastly different picture from a similar survey at the close of the seventeenth century. The development of the country's natural resources, the influences of the Industrial Revolution, the Opening of the great west and the evolution of industry have left their mark upon education as well as upon the other departments of social life.
