Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Problem of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever For over a decade Rocky Mountain spotted fever has been a problem of great interest to the physician, the zoologist and the sanitarian. Its geographic limitation, seasonal prevalence, intimate association with wood-ticks and variation in severity in different localities, combine to make it one of the most interesting and intricate disease problems which has arisen in our generation. It has a peculiar interest for us because apparently it is confined to the American continent. Some of the earlier investigative work in this field was done by members of the Association of Military Surgeons of the United States, and it has therefore been considered appropriate to present a brief review of the progress in the study of the disease to the Association and to indicate the lines along which investigative and eradicative work should be carried in the future. Although the disease has been known in Idaho and Montana since 1873, the first specific reference to it in literature is to be found in the report of the Surgeon General of the Army for the fiscal year ending June 30, 1896 (76). It is there stated that "the Surgeon at Boise Barracks referred in one of his monthly reports to the prevalence of spotted fever in the civil settlements in the neighborhood of the post. On being requested to give fuller particulars concerning this fever, he stated that as he had not seen any of the cases that occurred he had called upon his medical friends in civil life for information."
