Book excerpt: Following the publication of the Japanese edition of this book, several inter esting developments took place in the area. The author wanted to describe some of these, as well as to offer suggestions concerning future problems which he hoped would stimulate readers working in this field. For these reasons, Chapter 8 was added. Apart from the additional chapter and a few minor changes made by the author, this translation closely follows the text of the original Japanese edition. We would like to thank Professor J. L. Doob for his helpful comments on the English edition. T. Hida T. P. Speed v Preface The physical phenomenon described by Robert Brown was the complex and erratic motion of grains of pollen suspended in a liquid. In the many years which have passed since this description, Brownian motion has become an object of study in pure as well as applied mathematics. Even now many of its important properties are being discovered, and doubtless new and useful aspects remain to be discovered. We are getting a more and more intimate understanding of Brownian motion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an easy-to-read reference providing a link between partial differential equations (pde), stochastic analysis, and index theory. Most mathematicians working in pde are only vaguely familiar with the powerful ideas of stochastic analysis. On the other hand, the additional intuition which Taira?s book conveys might provide better insight and be helpful for their work. In addition, the book provides a nice compendium for a large variety of facts from differential geometry, functional analysis, pseudodifferential operators, and Markov processes - for quickly looking up a theorem.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A co-publication of the AMS and the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University This book is a concise and self-contained introduction of recent techniques to prove local spectral universality for large random matrices. Random matrix theory is a fast expanding research area, and this book mainly focuses on the methods that the authors participated in developing over the past few years. Many other interesting topics are not included, and neither are several new developments within the framework of these methods. The authors have chosen instead to present key concepts that they believe are the core of these methods and should be relevant for future applications. They keep technicalities to a minimum to make the book accessible to graduate students. With this in mind, they include in this book the basic notions and tools for high-dimensional analysis, such as large deviation, entropy, Dirichlet form, and the logarithmic Sobolev inequality. This manuscript has been developed and continuously improved over the last five years. The authors have taught this material in several regular graduate courses at Harvard, Munich, and Vienna, in addition to various summer schools and short courses. Titles in this series are co-published with the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Random trees and tree-valued stochastic processes are of particular importance in many fields. Using the framework of abstract "tree-like" metric spaces and ideas from metric geometry, Evans and his collaborators have recently pioneered an approach to studying the asymptotic behavior of such objects when the number of vertices goes to infinity. This publication surveys the relevant mathematical background and present some selected applications of the theory.

Book excerpt: This book presents the theory and applications of Fourier series and integrals, eigenfunction expansions, and related topics, on a level suitable for advanced undergraduates. It includes material on Bessel functions, orthogonal polynomials, and Laplace transforms, and it concludes with chapters on generalized functions and Green's functions for ordinary and partial differential equations. The book deals almost exclusively with aspects of these subjects that are useful in physics and engineering, and includes a wide variety of applications. On the theoretical side, it uses ideas from modern analysis to develop the concepts and reasoning behind the techniques without getting bogged down in the technicalities of rigorous proofs.

Book excerpt: "This book features a unified derivation of the mathematical theory of the three classical types of invariant random matrix ensembles-orthogonal, unitary, and symplectic. The authors follow the approach of Tracy and Widom, but the exposition here contains a substantial amount of additional material, in particular, facts from functional analysis and the theory of Pfaffians. The main result in the book is a proof of universality for orthogonal and symplectic ensembles corresponding to generalized Gaussian type weights following the authors' prior work. New, quantitative error estimates are derived." --Book Jacket.

Book excerpt: This book presents the foundations of the theory of groups and semigroups acting isometrically on Gromov hyperbolic metric spaces. Particular emphasis is paid to the geometry of their limit sets and on behavior not found in the proper setting. The authors provide a number of examples of groups which exhibit a wide range of phenomena not to be found in the finite-dimensional theory. The book contains both introductory material to help beginners as well as new research results, and closes with a list of attractive unsolved problems.

Book excerpt: The main goal of this book is the construction of families of Calabi-Yau 3-manifolds with dense sets of complex multiplication fibers. The new families are determined by combining and generalizing two methods. Firstly, the method of E. Viehweg and K. Zuo, who have constructed a deformation of the Fermat quintic with a dense set of CM fibers by a tower of cyclic coverings. Using this method, new families of K3 surfaces with dense sets of CM fibers and involutions are obtained. Secondly, the construction method of the Borcea-Voisin mirror family, which in the case of the author's examples yields families of Calabi-Yau 3-manifolds with dense sets of CM fibers, is also utilized. Moreover fibers with complex multiplication of these new families are also determined. This book was written for young mathematicians, physicists and also for experts who are interested in complex multiplication and varieties with complex multiplication. The reader is introduced to generic Mumford-Tate groups and Shimura data, which are among the main tools used here. The generic Mumford-Tate groups of families of cyclic covers of the projective line are computed for a broad range of examples.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Group-theoretic methods have taken an increasingly prominent role in analysis. Some of this change has been due to the writings of Sigurdur Helgason. This book is an introduction to such methods on spaces with symmetry given by the action of a Lie group. The introductory chapter is a self-contained account of the analysis on surfaces of constant curvature. Later chapters cover general cases of the Radon transform, spherical functions, invariant operators, compact symmetric spaces and other topics. This book, together with its companion volume, Geometric Analysis on Symmetric Spaces (AMS Mathematical Surveys and Monographs series, vol. 39, 1994), has become the standard text for this approach to geometric analysis. Sigurdur Helgason was awarded the Steele Prize for outstanding mathematical exposition for Groups and Geometric Analysis and Differential Geometry, Lie Groups and Symmetric Spaces.
