Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Letters of St. Paul Life of Our Lord and Saviour jesus Christ, I undertook the task of preparing a Life of St. Paul and during the interval much has happened to delay its execution. When I under took it, I was minister in the remote Scottish parish of Tulliallan and presently, toward the close of the year 1907, I was translated to St. Andrew's Church in the Perthshire town of Blairgowrie, where I ministered for two happy years. The employments of that large and delightful charge en grossed my time and taxed my scanty strength, leaving me small leisure all the less that my service in preaching was widely requisitioned, and I was continually engaged in the ministry of my British Weekly Correspondence. Then, quite unexpectedly, I was invited by the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland to occupy the Chair of Theology in the Londonderry College. Reluctant though I was to leave a people whom I loved and a ministry so rich ahd glad and venture among strangers and untried responsi bilities, I could not but recognise the voice of God in an urgent call addressed to.me not only without solicitation on my part but despite my express will and now, as I review my experience, I bless His gracious providence and thank fully acknowledge the goodness and mercy which have attended me and mine since our coming here. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Half-Hours With St. John's Epistles The similarity of the Epistle and the Gospel and their dissimilarity also will be seen when we study a passage in each containing the same fundamental truth: And this is life eternal, that they should know thee, the only true God, and him whoi'h thou didst send, even Jesus Christ. (john xvii. Here eternal life is the progressive recog nition of God through an increasing knowledge of His Son. The Gospel gives the historic revelation of God. But the Epistle goes further, And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Family Expositions: On the Epistles of St. John and St. Jude, and Those of St. Paul to Timothy I feel anxious that the reader should not mistake the character of these expositions. They do not at all pretend to be critical and exact. They are abridged notes of those explanations, and simple practical remarks on the sacred text, which I gave in morning worship, and which appeared at the time likely to be useful to my own family. They were written down by my children, with out any view to publication, for their own benefit. The manuscripts were lent among their friends, and it was only after many requests that the author, giving them such slight revision as his many occupations allowed, has agreed to their publication. If the Lord shall bless them to the good of those who read them, or of families where they may be used, it will manifestly be another example that he can employ weak instruments in His service and let the praise be to Him alone. Should this be the case, the author may be encouraged to publish more of these expositions, similar notes having been taken on all the books of the New Testament, from the Epistle to the Philippians to the close of Revelation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Epistles of St. Paul, Vol. 1 of 2 The purpose of this work is to give a living picture of St. Paul himself, and of the circumstances by which he was surrounded. The biography of the Apostle must be compiled from two sources; first, his own letters, and secondly, the narrative in the Acts of the Apostles. The latter, after a slight sketch of his early history, supplies us with fuller details of his middle life; and his Epistles afford much subsidiary in formation concerning his missionary labours during the same period. The light concentrated upon this portion of his course, makes darker by contrast the obscurity which rests upon the remainder; for we are left to gain what knowledge we can of his later years, from scattered hints in a few short letters Of his own, and from a single sentence of his disciple Clement.
