Book excerpt: Confined to an institution and further burdened by patriarchal assumptions and stereotypes, incarcerated women struggle to retain a sense of self-worth for themselves and often for their children. Scholarship on the subject typically has either ignored or trivialized the role of gender as an organizing feature of society. The result is a lack of emphasis on the role played by gender in the lives of women in a correctional setting. In this theoretically informed and empirically grounded textbook, Morash and Schram explain the realities of prison life for women from a feminist perspective. The hope for reform begins with an informed public so that a system premised on deterrence and punishment can also offer opportunities for rehabilitation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why are there pronounced gender differences in rates of criminal victimization? Does gender influence the response of the criminal justice system and other parts of the community to offenders and to crime victims? What part does gender play in the etiology of illegal activities committed by both males and females? Understanding Gender, Crime, and Justice takes a contemporary look at such questions and considers areas that are often neglected in other books on gender, crime, and justice. In the last three decades, there has been an explosion of theory and related research relevant to gender, crime, and justice. Author Merry Morash, a well-known feminist scholar in the field of criminal justice, acquaints readers with key breakthroughs in criminological conceptualization and theories to explain the interplay between gender and both crime and justice. Understanding Gender, Crime, and Justice pays especial attention to race, ethnicity, and immigrant groups, and provides a unique comparative perspective. Key Features Includes first-person accounts from crime victims, workers in the justice system, male lawbreakers, and women engaged in prostitution to give insight into a diversity of experiences and standpoints Parallels the effects of gender and sexual orientation in laws, in patterns and causes of victimization, and in the responses of the justice system to both victims and offenders Integrates international examples to place U.S. experiences in a comparative perspective and to show gender inequities on a worldwide scale Provides numerous photos--unique for a text of this type--to portray people of all sorts in various regions of the world Includes Web site recommendations for further exploration of chapter topics Understanding Gender, Crime, and Justice is an ideal textbook for undergraduate and graduate courses that focus on women and criminal justice. The book is also a valuable asset for gender courses in sociology and for women's studies programs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although there is plentiful research on the impact of marriage, employment and the military on desistance from criminal behaviour in the lives of men, far less is known about the factors most important to women’s desistance. Imprisoned women are far more likely than their male counterparts to be the primary caretakers of children before their incarceration, and are far more likely to intend to reunify with their children upon their release from incarceration. This book focuses on the role of mothering in women’s desistance from criminal behaviour. Drawing on original research, this book explores the nature of mothering during incarceration, how mothers maintain a relationship with their children from behind bars and the ways in which mothering makes desistance more or less likely after incarceration. It outlines the ways in which race, gender, class, nationality, sexuality, gender identity, and other characteristics affect mothering and desistance, and explores the tensions between individual and system-level factors in the consideration of desistance. This book suggests that any discussion of desistance, particularly for women, must move beyond the traditional focus on individual characteristics and decision-making. Such a focus overlooks the role played by context and systems which undermine both women's attempts to be mothers and their attempts to desist. By contrast, in the tradition of Beth Richie’s Compelled to Crime, this book explores both the trees and the forests, and the quantum in-between, in a way that aims for lasting societal and individual changes.
