So are the inner and the outer world, pride and love, individualism and collectivism. To mention a few more, nations are gods, and classes are gods. It is natural for us to reduce all these dualistic and pluralistic gods to one God. This natural reduction, however, is only possible by means of synthetic creation. A new God fashioned from the substance of all existing gods is the thing which we now badly want. The sense of the dignity of one's own moral person is in need of being so heightened as to stand above all things else. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Principles of Morals and Legislation The following sheets were, as the note on the opposite page expresses, printed so long ago as the year 1780. The design, in pursuance of which they were written, was not so extensive as that announced by the present title. They had at that time no other destination than that of serving as an introduction to a plan of a penal code in terminis, designed to follow them, in the same volume. The body of the work had received its completion according to the then present extent of the author's views, when, in the investigation of some flaws he had discovered, he found himself unexpectedly entangled in an unsuspected corner of the meta physical maze. A suspension, at first not apprehended to be more than a temporary one, necessarily ensued: suspension brought on coolness, and coolness, aided by other concurrent causes, ripened into disgust. Imperfections pervading the whole mass had already been pointed out by the sincerity of severe and discerning friends; and conscience had certified the-justness of their censure. The inordinate length of some of the chapters, the apparent inutility of others, and the dry and metaphysical turn of the whole, suggested an apprehension, that, if published in its present form, the work would contend under great disadvantages for any chance, it might on other accounts possess, of being read, and consequently of being of use. Precept, cmmfle, and training are the three degrees of comparison in this important business - the first being good, the second better, and the third best of all. The education of home is also of infinitely greater im portance than that which comes from any other source. Finally, we need scarcely remark, it is by the influence of religious prin ciple that we may chiefly expect to give the right stamp inhuman character. When we examine the present volume with a regard to these principles, we find that, being purely didactic, it can only be expected to do a little for the greatest of causes - religion; which the Editors conceive should be taught directly from the oracles of Sacred Truth. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays on the Principles of Morality: And on the Private and Political Rights and Obligations of Mankind The Author of this Work died in the spring of 1828, leaving in manuscript the three Essays of which it consists. We learn from himself that the undertaking originated in a belief (in which he probably is far from being alone) that the existing treatises on Moral Philosophy did not exhibit the principles nor enforce the obligations of morality in all their perfection and purity; that a work was yet wanted which should present a true and authoritative standard of rectitude - one by an appeal to which the moral character of human actions might be rightly estimated. This he here endeavours to supply. Rejecting what he considered the false grounds of duty, and erroneous principles of action which are proposed in the most prominent and most generally received of our extant theories of moral obligation, he proceeds to erect a system of morality upon what he regards as the only true and legitimate basis - the Will of God. He makes, therefore, the authority of the Deity the sole ground of duty, and His communicated Will the only ultimate standard of right and wrong; and assumes, "that wheresoever this Will is made known, human duty is determined; - and that neither the conclusions of philosophers, nor advantages, nor dangers, nor pleasures, nor sufferings, ought to have any opposing influence in regulating our conduct." The attempt to establish a system of such uncompromising morality, must necessarily bring the writer into direct collision with the advocates of the utilitarian scheme, particularly with Dr. Paley; and accordingly it will be found that he frequently enters the lists with this great champion of Expediency. With what success - how well he exposes the fallacies of that specious but dangerous doctrine - how far he succeeds in refuting the arguments by which it is sought to be maintained, and in establishing another system of obligations and duties and rights upon a more stable foundation, must be left to the reader to determine. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Moral Science: An Essay I shall not be surprised. To find the success of the attempt questioned and denied by many, if not most, of those who have Spent the best part of their lives in the study of the great Catholic writers on morals. I admit, nay claim, that some important conclusions at which I have arrived differ from those of the ordinary hand books ou Human Acts, Laws, and Conscience, and are not to be found in any published treatise with which I am acquainted. If it were otherwise, I should not have thought of writing or publishing. Very soon after I began to teach Moral Theology, I noticed a considerable difference between the principles of the science as explained in the treatise on Human' Acts, and the less general conclusions reached later on, when dealing with particular virtues. As time advanced this difference seemed to increase rather than diminish, and I resolved to try whether I could not formulate the principles so that, while perfectly reasonable in them selves and breathing the spirit of the School, they might stand the test of being brought into comparison with all the less general, and therefore more easily ascertained, conclusions of moral science. Unless forced by what I deem compelling reasons I have not ventured to advocate a new form of statement: the reader must decide for himself whether the reasons that appeal to me so strongly are as conclusive as I deem them. Those who have begun the study of moral theology or ethics by reading the treatise on Human Acts, may be disposed to think that the treatise in question, with which all our hand-books commence, was developed and put into its present shape before the special treatises that come later on and deal with particular virtues, such as charity, religion, chastity, or justice and that these special treatises are practical applications of more general prin ciples previously formulated. The reverse is true. The trea tise on Human Acts is a synthesis of conclusions previously deduced when dealing with special virtues. Hence the natural order is to test the more general principles by applying them to the solution of special cases, somewhat as the student of nature tests a law by seeing whether it harmonizes with observed facts or even with previously ascertained less general conclusions. It may be, of course, that these less general conclusions are not true, or that the facts have not been correctly observed, or that the observation has not been sufficiently exhaustive. If, however, you are satisfied that the special conclusions are true, while you cannot make them square with the more general principle or law, nothing remains but to give this principle or law a new shape, so that it may be brought into harmony with the other ascertained results of science. His universe 1s man. But man comes from afar, and has had a long pedigree in beast, and bird, and clod, and is the child of a Universe which we call material' (knowing little what we mean). And he may be going far, as haply we might see could we but know him as he truly is. He is the richest of all beings In marvels, - complex, everchanging, never static - his life a growing mystery, a web which has the Infinite and Finite for warp and woof. Even the visible universe borrows worth from him, and in him attains its highest. For though his mind can invent neither order, nor beauty, nor any kind of good, yet it alone can find them; and only in him, of all the finite beings we know, can they rise into existence. Borrowing the elemental forces of the physical world, in themselves silent and dark and without meaning, he lifts them into order and beauty in his soul they break out into the marvel of light and colour and the miracle of music. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Morals (Being the Body of the Work), Vol. 2 It may excite some surprise that I have made so few allusions to the numerous, and, in some cases, valuable, works on Ethics which have appeared in England during the last few years. It is not that I am blind to their merits, or that I have not derived advantage from them in the way of either confirming, modifying, or correcting my own opinions; but the result of my experience is that the constant reference to other authors is a source of considerable difficulty and embarrassment to the reader. Many writers do not seem sufficiently to discriminate between the functions of an author and a reviewer; and this is especially the case in philosophical works, where the large proportion of contested matter offers a con stant temptation to an author to digress into a discussion of other theories, either as coinciding with or conflicting with his own. To so great an extent is this the case that I often find persons who have great difficulty in distinguishing between the expository and the critical parts of a modern book.
