Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Morals (Being the Body of the Work), Vol. 2 It may excite some surprise that I have made so few allusions to the numerous, and, in some cases, valuable, works on Ethics which have appeared in England during the last few years. It is not that I am blind to their merits, or that I have not derived advantage from them in the way of either confirming, modifying, or correcting my own opinions; but the result of my experience is that the constant reference to other authors is a source of considerable difficulty and embarrassment to the reader. Many writers do not seem sufficiently to discriminate between the functions of an author and a reviewer; and this is especially the case in philosophical works, where the large proportion of contested matter offers a con stant temptation to an author to digress into a discussion of other theories, either as coinciding with or conflicting with his own. To so great an extent is this the case that I often find persons who have great difficulty in distinguishing between the expository and the critical parts of a modern book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Morals (Being the Body of the Work), Vol. 2 In the Preface to the Introductory Chapters of this work, which were published in the spring of 1886, though the sheets had actually been struck off in 1875, I said: 'The printing of the rest of the work was suddenly suspended in consequence of the declining health of my colleague. The remaining chapters or the materials for them exist in MS., in a more or less imperfect form; but a natural reluctance to recur to the work immediately after my colleague's death together with subsequent engagements has hitherto prevented me from devoting to them the attention necessary to their completion. Pending the question of undertaking this task, I think the publication of the following' (that is, the Introductory) 'chapters may be of some service to students as affording an introduction to Moral Philosophy and containing a brief sketch of the leading English Moralists. There is the additional reason for publishing these chapters in a separate form, that they alone received Professor Wilson's final imprimatur. Book excerpt: The Principles of Moral and Christian Philosophy presents the first masterpiece of Scottish Common Sense philosophy. This two-volume treatise is important for its wide range of insights about the nature of the human mind, the foundations of morals, and the relationship between morality and religion. The first volume presents a detailed study of the faculties of the human mind and their interrelations. The second volume presents arguments for the existence of God and for God's infinite perfection. The underlying notion is God's moral government of the world, in which there is recompense for good and evil deeds. George Turnbull (1698-1748) taught at Marischal College, Aberdeen. Alexander Broadie is Professor of Logic and Rhetoric at the University of Glasgow. Please note: This title is available as an ebook for purchase on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and iTunes.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Immanuel Kant (1724-1804) stands among the greatest thinkers of the Western world. There is hardly an area of thought, at least of philosophical thought, to which he did not make significant and lasting contributions. Particularly noteworthy are his writings on the foundations and limits of human knowledge, the bidimensional nature of perceptual or "natural" objects (including human beings), the basic principles and ends of morality, the character of a just society and of a world at peace, the movement and direction of human history, the nature of beauty, the end or purpose of all creation, the proper education of young people, the true conception of religion, and on and on. Though Kant was a life-long resident of Konigsberg, Prussia - child, student, tutor, and then professor of philosophy (and other subjects) - his thought ranged over nearly all the world and even beyond. Reports reveal that he (a bachelor) was an amiable man, highly respected by his students and colleagues, and even loved by his several close friends. He was apparently a man of integrity, both in his personal relations and in his pursuit of knowledge and truth. Despite his somewhat pessimistic attitude toward the moral progress of mankind - judging from past history and contemporary events - he never wavered from a deep-seated faith in the goodness of the human heart, in man's "splendid disposition toward the good.
