The attempt is here made to fix attention more definitely on the ethical side of Hindu teaching. The aim of the writer has been to present the subject in a way that will make it intelligible to the ordinary educated reader, particularly to the educated Indian. He has sought at the same time, however, to maintain scientific accuracy in his discussion, and he hopes that he may have been able to contribute something to the study of a subject which he cannot but believe to be of the highest importance scientifically and practically. He believes, on the one hand, that some knowledge of Hindu thought should be of the greatest value to the Western student of ethics, for he has the feeling that Western ethical thinking has suffered from a certain insularity, which acquaintance with other systems of thought and life should help to remove. On the other hand, he believes that it is important that thoughtful Hindus should have their attention directed to the principles on which their practical life is based.
