Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of English Metre Before plunging into the detailed work for this book I thought that a formula might be stated which would cover the whole range of modern English verse; but it was soon evident that no such simple formula was possible, that metrists have assumed a degree of homogeneity which is not actually found, that there was more complexity than their generalizations would lead one to expect, that there is an underlying law, but something at once less rigid and more comprehensive than any they had yet stated. Johnson's opinion that 'the essence of verse is regularity, and its ornament is variety' is often quoted with approval; but how is this combination effected? Does it mean now one, now the other; law and order prevailing in one part, Bolshevism asserting itself in another; that is to say, the verse sometimes rhythmical, sometimes not? This position I should be unwilling to accept, and I prefer to consider, with the poets themselves, that rhythm is an essential of poetry, and that the freedom is within the rhythmic law, not a violation of it. The most suggestive theorists, I found, were Patmore, Lanier, and Mr. Omond - for the work of the latter, in particular, I have the greatest admiration - but above all I have valued the dicta of poets themselves, and have quoted them freely. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handbook of Modern English Metre My chief Object in the first eight chapters is to give a methodical and uncontroversial statement of the principles, which are alike the foundation and the outcome of my former work on English Metre, the second edition of which was published in 1901. In the later chapters I have gone on to treat of metre from the aesthetic side, and have ventured to put forward some suggestions as to the connexion between sound and sense in poetry. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Use of Classical Metres in English I am very grateful to Puttenham for the lengths to which he has carried his principles. It seems to me that he makes the attitude of those who deny the existence of quantity in English, once for all and to the last degree absurd. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of English Syntax This little book appears in response to many urgent requests from friends who, at some time, have been under the author's tuition or supervision, and who believe, with him, that instruction in English grammar may be much simplified; that often too much time is spent in going over unimportant details in parsing and analysis; and that the ability to illustrate synthetically every principle of syntax, and to correct any violation thereof, is of greater value than is generally considered. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of the History of Language AN attempt has been made to assist in making Professor Paul's great work better known to the English public, by translating it into English. In the original'by far the greater number of illustrative instances are drawn from the German language. In cases where English examples served precisely the same purpose as those drawn from German they have been frequently substituted. Additional examples, mainly drawn from English, have been inserted in brackets. It is hoped that it may be possible on a future occasion to add an Appendix fully illustrating the principles laid down by Paul from the English and other languages. Several references have been made to works which have been published since the appearance of Paul's work, such as the most recent productions of Darmesteter. Book excerpt: The present work was laid before the public, with the intention of representing in a form as systematic as the extent of the subject would allow, those views concerning the structure and relations of the English language, which amongst such scholars as had studied them with the proper means and opportunities, were then generally received; and which, so being received, might take their stand as established and recognized facts. With the results of modern criticism, as applied to his native tongue, it was conceived that an educated Englishman should be familiar. To this extent the special details of the language were exhibited; and to this extent the work was strictly a Grammar of the English Language.
