Book Synopsis God, Duty and Community in English Economic Life, 1660-1720 by : Brodie Waddell
Download or read book God, Duty and Community in English Economic Life, 1660-1720 written by Brodie Waddell and published by Boydell Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An analysis of later Stuart economic culture that contributes significantly to our understanding of early modern society. The English economy underwent profound changes in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, yet the worldly affairs of ordinary people continued to be shaped as much by traditional ideals and moral codes as by material conditions. This book explores the economic implications of many of the era's key concepts, including Christian stewardship, divine providence, patriarchal power, paternal duty, local community, and collective identity. Brodie Waddell drawson a wide range of contemporary sources - from ballads and pamphlets to pauper petitions and guild regulations - to show that such ideas pervaded every aspect of social and economic relations during this crucial period. Previous discussions of English economic life have tended to ignore or dismiss the influence of cultural factors. By contrast, Waddell argues that popular beliefs about divine will, social duty and communal bonds remained the frame through which most people viewed vital 'earthly' concerns such as food marketing, labour relations, trade policy, poor relief, and many others. This innovative study, demonstrating both the vibrancy and the diversity of the 'moral economies' of the later Stuart period, represents a significant contribution to our understanding of early modern society. It will be essential reading for all early modern British economic and cultural historians. BrodieWaddell is Leverhulme Early Career Fellow at the University of Cambridge. He has published on preaching, local government, the landscape and other aspects of early modern society.

This book was released on 2010-10-04 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The true tale of an edenic Rocky Mountain town and what transpired when a predatory species returned to its ancestral home. When, in the late 1980s, residents of Boulder, Colorado, suddenly began to see mountain lions in their yards, it became clear that the cats had repopulated the land after decades of persecution. Here, in a riveting environmental fable that recalls Peter Benchley's thriller Jaws, journalist David Baron traces the history of the mountain lion and chronicles Boulder's effort to coexist with its new neighbors. A parable for our times, The Beast in the Garden is a scientific detective story and a real-life drama, a tragic tale of the struggle between two highly evolved predators: man and beast.

Book Synopsis The Duty of Reformation in Light of God's Mercies by : Thomas Gouge
Download or read book The Duty of Reformation in Light of God's Mercies written by Thomas Gouge and published by Puritan Publications. This book was released on 2017-10-04 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This treatise is about reformation. It is set within the framework of being more holy, because reformation means “reformation of life” in light of Jesus Christ’s saving benefits and God’s abundant saving mercies. What makes this treatise so excellent is not only its theological and practical depth (and it is deep), but its vivid directness. Gouge, uncompromisingly from Ezra 9:13-14, is going to tell Christians (not just sinners) that if they sin, expect judgment. And, if Christians sin collectively (as a Christian nation), expect collective judgment. Gouge says, “When Christians will not reform their ways, God replies, they have not minded my mercies, I will not mind their miseries.” Christians around the world need true biblical and spiritual reformation. Even though God has given Christians blessing upon blessing, and mercy piled onto mercy, if Christians answer God’s abundant blessing by sinning against him, what then should they expect? As Gouge shows, “If reformation can only be regarded as a suitable compensation to God's mercies to us, we are without it.” In other words, Christians must be about the work of reformation post-haste. This work is not a scan or facsimile, has been carefully transcribed by hand being made easy to read in modern English, and has an active table of contents for electronic versions.
