Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Princeton Theological Review, Vol. 7: 1909 There is no certainty as to the precise year, not even as to the precise century, in which the Howie's first went to Lochgoin; nor is there any certainty as to the district or country from which they came. The origin of the Howies, indeed, like that of many of the oldest landed Scottish fam illes, is lost in the haze of antiquity. Book Synopsis Princeton Seminary in American Religion and Culture by : James H. Moorhead
Download or read book Princeton Seminary in American Religion and Culture written by James H. Moorhead and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2012-08-31 with total page 577 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of Princeton Theological Seminary, the Presbyterian Church's first seminary in America, begins in 1812, shortly after the United States had entered into its second war against Great Britain. Princeton went on to become a model of American theological education, setting the standard for subsequent seminaries and other religious higher education institutions. Princeton's story is uniquely intertwined with American religious and cultural history, the history of theological education, the Presbyterian church, and conceptions of ministry in general. Thus, this volume will interest not only those with links to Princeton but also historians of religion, Presbyterians, leaders within seminaries and Christian colleges, and all who are interested in the history of Christian thought in America.

This book was released on 2017-12-11 with total page 712 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Princeton Theological Review, 1907, Vol. 5 That any attempt to write the history of the apostolic age without taking account of the life and work of Jesus must prove inadequate will not be denied. For whether we learn of this from Paul or from other sources, it is the fact of the life and work, death and resurrection of Jesus which is the prius of the subsequent history. The resurrection, it is true, is often eliminated from the statement of the factual basis upon which the early Church rested and of which account must be taken by historians of the apostolic age, and in its place is put the belief of the disciples in the resurrec tion. But whatever view be taken of the resurrection of Jesus as narrated in the New Testament, it will be admitted that the history of the apostolic age can not be understood apart from the person of Jesus: what He was, what He did, what He taught, what impression He made on his disciples and what they believed concerning Him.
