Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Princeton Theological Review, 1907, Vol. 5 That any attempt to write the history of the apostolic age without taking account of the life and work of Jesus must prove inadequate will not be denied. For whether we learn of this from Paul or from other sources, it is the fact of the life and work, death and resurrection of Jesus which is the prius of the subsequent history. The resurrection, it is true, is often eliminated from the statement of the factual basis upon which the early Church rested and of which account must be taken by historians of the apostolic age, and in its place is put the belief of the disciples in the resurrec tion. But whatever view be taken of the resurrection of Jesus as narrated in the New Testament, it will be admitted that the history of the apostolic age can not be understood apart from the person of Jesus: what He was, what He did, what He taught, what impression He made on his disciples and what they believed concerning Him. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theological Review, 1869, Vol. 6: A Journal of Religious Thought and Life; Nos. XXIV-XXVII The Germans, or, as they are called in Hungary, the Saxons, from a very early date formed settlements in the country. They are dispersed in small insulated knots or clusters of population all over the land, tenaciously reten tive of their language, manners and customs. Their chief district is in the far east, under the Carpathians, and ad joining the Seklers. It is called Saxonland, well cultivated, and filled with an industrious and intelligent people. Her manstadt, its capital, which I regret I had not the oppor tunity of visiting, is, I am told, in every respect a completely German town. The Saxons are, I believe, everywhere ad herents of the Lutheran faith. The Sclavonic races which are dispersed along the northern and southern frontiers of the country, are, with some exceptions among the Slowacks of the north, attached to the Greek Church. The rest of Hungary, exclusive of the Unitarians, of whom I shall speak presently, is divided between the Catholics and the Calvin ists or Reformed They form the richest part of the pcpu lation; and to these two communions most of the gentry and nobility now belong. The Catholic clergy, I was told by an extreme liberal, are as a body tolerant and patriotic, and not at all infected with ultramontane tendencies. In fact, the common struggle for freedom has had a great efiect in softening down religious antipathies, and causing the members of the four different religions recognized by the laws, to look on each other with mutual kindness and sympathy. This is an OCR edition with typos. Excerpt from book: The Witness of the Holy Spirit to the Bible, then, is not something standing apart and isolated from the life of faith; it is a part of the inward enlightening work of the Spirit which we have briefly set forth, and of precisely the same nature. It is of importance to understand the nature and value of this truth, because it has fallen into neglect, or else has been misunderstood, and so laid open to criticism. This particular application of the doctrine of the Spirit's work was first adequately developed by Calvin, and by him handed on to the theologians of the succeeding century of both the Reformed and Lutheran branches of Protestantism, though in the Lutheran theology it found full treatment only in the seventeenth century. When rightly conceived it will be seen to be a truth of fundamental importance in relation to such great questions as the origin and certitude of faith. It is necessary, however, to guard it from misconceptions. It was no less acute a thinker than Strauss3 who affirmed that in this doctrine the Protestant system found a standpoint for faith independent of the fallible judgment of the Church and of the unstable judgment of the individual subject of faith. But because Strauss conceived of the Spirit's witness in a mystical way as being the communication to man of a new truth separate from the Bible, i. e. the proposition that the Bible is God's word, he thought the doctrine open to criticism and held that in adhering to it the Protestant theology unavoidably abandons its position in regard to the authority of Scripture, and turns aside into Mysticism or Rationalism. If, he says, this Witness of the Spirit to the divine origin of the Bible is the communication The Holy Spirit, pp. 88-m; Kuyper, The Work of the Holy Spirit. p. 152; Beversluis, De heili...

The Editor previously appointed, has now become Proprietor of the work, and will conduct it entirely on his own responsibility, with the advice of an Association of Gentle men in the city of N ew-york, and its neighbour hood. When the church emerged from the ignorance and corruption of the dark ages, and caught a glimpse of the light and glory of the Gospel in contrast with the reigning and universal superstition, im osture and wickedness, the minds of men were roused, an the transi tion gave to eve species of knowledge a captivating power; and in re ation to the first and main object, conversion and salvation of men, assigned to human learn ing a mistaken oflice and an undue importance, which the invention of printing encouraged, and various causes have helped to perpetuate.
