Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Princeton Review, Vol. 54: January-June, 1878 To give the subject the fullest attention. However. Let the objection be considered more minutely. Men must have sound reasons for saying that the doctrine of eternal punishment is repugnant to the nature of God, and is contradicted by his jus tice. What are they? It is difficult to imagine more than two. It may be urged that the disadvantages under which men come into the world are such that it would be wrong to punish them eternally and it may be said that the sins of which men are guilty do not assume a gravity which calls for such a pen alty in other words, that endless punishment is excessive pun ishment. These arguments deserve separate consideration. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Princeton Review, Vol. 54: July-December, 1878 I have said that a great want of our times, in order to test at once science and philosophy, is a knowledge of human nature. I point to a full and systematized knowledge of human nature, as this is to be reached through exhaustive analysis of experience, and also by summary of the latest and surest results attained by anatomical and physiological research. Iventure to submit that such knowledge is a want of the times, not merely on the ground that people generally need much enlight enment on the matter, but that this want still exists even in the case of those who are competent guides of others on distinct divisions of the great subject. Scientific men need to come into fuller possession of the results of analysis of mental experi ence. Philosophic thinkers, devoted to the study of all that belongs to mind, need to allow fora more extended study Of the nerve-system, with its great centre and extended ramifica tions. If scientific men declare that human nature, as well as all subordinate organism, must come within the sweep of seien tific inquiry, we have no Opposition to offer to the allegation. But we have to suggest that science comes up with a more diffi cult task here than it has ever encountered before and all men are in possession Of a large amount of material with which to test results. This piece of work is not to be done in the labora tory, or by geological expeditions, or by dredging parties on quiet waters, or by the most detailed observations in natural history. Nor is it to be got through by bringing any amount of fibre and tissue under the microscope. All work in the de partments named has its own place and its recognized value. But when it is proposed to include human nature within a scien tific account of known existence, human nature itself must be studied, and this is the hardest piece of study which scientific men have faced. When Huxley began to study and expound Descartes' Method when Darwin advanced to account for the general acknowledgment Of moral distinctions among men when Tyndall went forward to treat of the interaction of social forces when Haeckel followed Darwin back to a point in the history of creation where could be seen the origin of 21 z' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Utilitarianism in the Early American Republic James E. Crimmins provides a fresh perspective on the history of antebellum American political thought. Based on a broad-ranging study of the dissemination and reception of utilitarian ideas in the areas of constitutional politics, law education, law reform, moral theory and political economy, Crimmins illustrates the complexities of the place of utilitarianism in the intellectual ferment of the times, in both its secular and religious forms, intersection with other doctrines, and practical outcomes. The pragmatic character of American political thought revealed—culminating in the postbellum rise of Pragmatism—stands in marked contrast to the conventional interpretations of intellectual history in this period. Utilitarianism in the Early American Republic will be of interest to academic specialists, and graduate and senior undergraduate students engaged in the history of political thought, moral philosophy and legal philosophy, particularly scholars with interests in utilitarianism, the trans-Atlantic transfer of ideas, the American political tradition and modern American intellectual history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All arts and sciences, in their own way, ultimately try to come to grips with reality. What sets philosophy, theology, and religion apart is that they grapple with ultimate reality. Over the decades spanned by John Hick's life, in the course of this grappling (reminiscent of Jacob's nocturnal encounter with the angel) philosophy became analytic, theology dialogical, and religion comparative along one line of development. In these essays, written in honour of Professor Hick, leading world scholars in these fields share their most recent insights. They are, so to speak, postcards from the cutting edge.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental issues stretch across scales of geographic space and require action at multiple levels of jurisdiction, including the individual level, community level, national level, and global level. Much of the scholarly work surrounding new approaches to environmental governance tends to overlook the role of sub-national governments, but this study examines the potential of sub-national participation to make policy choices which are congruent with global strategies and national mandates. This book investigates the emerging actors and new channels of Japan’s environmental governance which has been taking shape within an increasingly globalized international system. By analysing this important new phenomenon, it sheds light on the changing nature of Japan’s environmental policy and politics, and shows how the links between global strategies, national mandates and local action serve as an influential factor in Japan’s changing structures of environmental governance. Further, it demonstrates that decision-making competencies are shared between actors operating at different levels and in new spheres of authority, resulting from collaboration between state and non-state actors. It highlights a number of the problems, challenges, and critiques of the actors in environmental governance, as well as raising new empirical and theoretical puzzles for the future study of governance over environmental and global issues. Finally, it concludes that changes in the tiers and new spheres of authority are leading the nation towards an environmentally stable future positioned within socio-economic and political constraints. Demonstrating that bridging policy gaps between local action, national policy and global strategies is potentially a way of reinventing environmental policy, this book will be of interest to students and scholars of Environmental Studies, Environmental Politics and Japanese Politics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this distinguished work Arnold Brecht, who served under more than a dozen German Chancellors and whose work in defense of democracy received recognition by the Adenauer government in 1953, surveys the philosophical and scientific foundations of political theory in the twentieth century. His wide-ranging treatise sweeps over the entire scope of this century's contributions, including the philosophical, juridical, scientific, sociological, methodological, and historical. The book is a pioneering effort toward an integrated presentation, a first attempt to offer a comprehensive modern political theory. The aim is both a systematic presentation and a full description of the recent genesis of thought. The pertinent teachings of representative writers-some from the past (from Hume and Kant to Darwin, Mill, and Marx) and most of the present century (from Peirce, James, Simmel, and Weber to Husserl, Dewey, Lasswell, Northrop, and Fuller) are analyzed. Dr. Brecht incorporates, chapter by chapter, his own contributions. Social scientists, philosophers, lawyers, and students of religion will find it a challenging guide, written with penetrating clarity and rich in fruitful suggestions. Originally published in 1959. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press.
