Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can the struggles of a great biblical figure help you to improve your life today? To help us cope with the burdens of our own “Egypts,” author Levi Meier brings to life the struggles, failures, and triumphs that reveal the human side of Moses, a central figure in Jewish, Christian and Islamic traditions. Engaging, empowering and insightful, Moses—The Prince, the Prophet shows how personal struggle and perseverance create a foundation for liberation and change while teaching us about ourselves—our role in life, our struggles and our relationship with God. More than a biography, Moses—The Prince, the Prophet is a personal guide to growth for each of us. It explores a life intertwined with the story of a people—from the Israelite Exodus from Egypt and the birth of a new nation, to the Divine revelation at Mount Sinai. Author Levi Meier—chaplain, clinical psychologist, and rabbi—knows how people struggle for healing and meaning in their lives. He brings the drama of these events from biblical history into today to show the very human side of Moses—a person who, like ourselves, experienced self-doubt, fear, suffering, failure and success. Through examining Moses’s experiences and the common threads they share with ours, we are taught lessons for our lives. Drawing on the stories in the Book of Exodus, midrash (finding contemporary meaning from ancient Jewish texts), the teachings of Jewish mystics, modern texts and psychotherapy, Meier offers new ways to create our own path to self-knowledge, self-fulfillment and self-actualization—and face life’s difficulties head-on.

The Owl and the Prince of Peace is filled with love, surprises, new understandings and hope.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Art of War, literally The Laws of War (military methods) by Master Sun is the most famous ancient Chinese treatise, dedicated to a military strategy and policy, written by Sun Tzu. The treatise by Sun Tzu influenced crucially on a whole military art of the East. Although it is the first treatise on the military art, it includes clearly expressed common principles of strategy as well as tactics. A special place in a military theoretical literature belongs to comments on Sun Tzu, the earliest of which appeared in the Han era (206-220 AD), and the new ones are still being created... The Prince is a 16th-century political treatise by the Italian diplomat and political theorist Niccolo Machiavelli. From correspondence a version appears to have been distributed in 1513, using a Latin title, De Principatibus (Of Principalities). However, the printed version was not published until 1532, five years after Machiavelli’s death. This was done with the permission of the Medici pope Clement VII, but «long before then, in fact since the first appearance of The Prince in manuscript, controversy had swirled about his writings». The Prince is sometimes claimed to be one of the first works of modern philosophy, especially modern political philosophy, in which the effective truth is taken to be more important than any abstract ideal. It was also in direct conflict with the dominant Catholic and scholastic doctrines of the time concerning politics and ethics.

Book excerpt: Hal Schumacher, or Prince Hal as he was commonly referred to by the scribes of the day, played with the New York Giants during some of their very best years, and played along side some of the best players the game has known - Mel Ott, Bill Terry, and his pitching partner Carl Hubbell to name but a few, all of whom are in the baseball Hall of Fame. Although Hal was proud of his accomplishments as a pitcher, he kept that pride to himself. And although willing to give interviews to baseball writers of the day, he tended to keep them short and rarely placed himself on the same pedestals that other players did. The New York Giants of the 1930s played in 3 World Series contests: 1933, 1936, and 1937, the latter two against the great Yankees teams of the day, and Schumacher was an integral part of those series. He also was chosen to play in the very first All Star game in 1933. His newspaper nickname of Prince Hal was chosen as the perfect complement to King Carl Hubbell, one of the greatest pitchers of the time, and a teammate of Schumacher during most of his playing days. Many have referred to them as one of the best righty-lefty combination to have ever taken the mound during their peak years. This biography of Hal Schumacher takes us year by year through the life of Prince Hal, gives us a history both before and following his playing days, and is most valuable to the reader because it gives us some insight into a quality baseball pitcher and a quality human being.
