Download or read book Saint Thomas Aquinas on the Existence of God written by Joseph Owens and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1980-01-01 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book puts before the reader a succinct and philosophically valid interpretation of St. Thomas Aquinas' arguments for the existence of God by a modern, historically grounded interpreter of his thought. Father Joseph Owens is well known for the exacting care with which he prepares his articles and the solid scholarly apparatus with which he supports them. His knowledge of Greek, Latin, Aristotelian, as well as the Thomistic corpus is profound, and he is conversant with the various interpretative traditions within Aristotelianism and Thomism in ancient, medieval, and modern times in their appropriate languages. This volume will challenge the reader, yet it includes everything to help comprehend the position of St. Thomas Aquinas on this central issue.
Book Synopsis Ens Primum Cognitum in Thomas Aquinas and the Tradition by : Brian Kemple
Download or read book Ens Primum Cognitum in Thomas Aquinas and the Tradition written by Brian Kemple and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-08-21 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ens Primum Cognitum in Thomas Aquinas and the Tradition presents a reading of Thomas Aquinas’ claim that “being” is the first object of the human intellect. Blending the insights of both the early Thomistic tradition (c.1380—1637AD) and the Leonine Thomistic revival (1879—present), Brian Kemple examines how this claim of Aquinas has been traditionally understood, and what is lacking in that understanding. While the recent tradition has emphasized the primacy of the real (so-called ens reale) in human recognition of the primum cognitum, Kemple argues that this misinterprets Aquinas, thereby closing off Thomistic philosophy to the broader perspective needed to face the philosophical challenges of today, and proposes an alternative interpretation with dramatic epistemological and metaphysical consequences.
Book Synopsis God ́s Existence. Can it be Proven? by : Paul Weingartner
Download or read book God ́s Existence. Can it be Proven? written by Paul Weingartner and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2013-05-02 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of the book is to show that the Five Ways of Thomas Aquinas, i.e. his five arguments to prove the existence of God, are logically correct arguments by the standards of modern Predicate Logic. In the first chapter this is done by commenting on the two preliminary articles preceeding the Five Ways in which Thomas Aquinas points out that on the one hand the existence of God is not self-evident to us and on the other hand, that, similar as in some scientific explanations, the mere existence of a cause for an effect which is evidently known to us can be proved. In the second chapter every argument is translated into the symbolic form of Predicate Logic and its logical validity is shown. Additionally a detailed and critical discussion of the premises of each argument is given.
Book Synopsis Aquinas’ Proofs for God’s Existence by : D. Bonnette
Download or read book Aquinas’ Proofs for God’s Existence written by D. Bonnette and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to investigate the legitimacy of the principle, "The per accidens necessarily implies the per se," as it is found in the writings of St. Thomas Aquinas. Special emphasis will be placed upon the function of this principle in the proofs for God's existence. The relevance of the principle in this latter context can be seen at once when it is observed that it is the key to the solution of the well known "prob lem of infinite regress. " The investigation of the principle in question will be divided into two Parts. A preliminary examination of the function of the principle will be made in Part I: Domains Other Than That of Creature-God. The domains to be considered in this Part are those of accident-substance, change, and knowledge. Employing what is learned of the function of the principle in these areas of application, Part II: The Domain of Creature-God will analyze the role of the principle in the proofs for God's existence. This latter Part will constitute the greater portion of the book, since the domain of creatures in their relation to God is the most significant application of the principle in the writings of St. Thomas. In the course of this investigation, relevant analyses by St. Thomas' commentators - both classical and contemporary - will be considered. Finally, in light of the insights offered by St.

Book Synopsis The Primacy of Love by : Paul J. Wadell
Download or read book The Primacy of Love written by Paul J. Wadell and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2009-03-01 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Aquinas was a man with a strategy -- not a strategy to assist us in good decision-making or a strategy to help us resolve our problems of conscience, but a strategy to work toward our personal transformation in light of God's love for us. Aquinas has traditionally been represented as a man whose ethics are overly rational, excessively formal, and too scholarly to be of much use in contemporary society. The Primacy of Love gives us a fresh look at his ethical thought and invites us to become part of his vision of the moral life as partners in God's perfect love. Author Paul Wadell gives special attention to the role of the passions, affections, and emotions in our moral life and creates a richly humane and compelling study written in a clear and accessible style. The Primacy of Love is a modern map for our own moral journey that is not so much something to study, but a way of life in which to participate. To follow this journey is to take up an adventure that will involve you from the center of your being and will change you forever.

This book endeavors to treat these questions in a clear and convincing language.

Book Synopsis The Matter To Existence by : Barney Tory
Download or read book The Matter To Existence written by Barney Tory and published by . This book was released on 2021-06-19 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a collection of original essays dealing with aspects of contemporary Existentialism from the viewpoint of an existential Thomism. In this book, the term "existential" takes on two distinct means. In the first, it concerns a Thomism centered on the primacy of the act of existence in the metaphysics of St. Thomas Aquinas. Instead of a philosophy centered on essences or forms, St. Thomas saw by way of a far-reaching and original intuition that it was existence, itself, that should be at the heart of metaphysics. The second meaning of the term existential refers to a Thomism that vivified by this insight is alive to the real in its myriad of forms, willing to leave its intramural debates and look at pressing contemporary issues, and hopefully stimulated by these challenges, renew itself.
