Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A stunning debut about a young Greek-American woman and the history she shares with her mother and grandmother. Imam is a recipe known throughout villages in Greece, handed down from mother to daughter. If you come from these villages, your history is passed on through your body. Its full name is imam baildi, and it means the priest fainted. Perhaps the priest was given a bit of bitter and sweet pleasure, and the power of everything behind the dish pushed him off his rock, just for a moment. Perhaps, when he was tumbling through the air, sighing with fear and ecstasy, he saw a glimpse of a new life to come. Layered with love affairs, family squabbles, poignant misunderstandings, moments of wonder, and more, The Priest Fainted is nothing less than the recipe for a young Greek-American woman's life. Using her imagination and the stories passed through her bones as ingredients, Catherine Temma Davidson uses memories, Greek myths, recipes, and family gossip to uncover a hidden history, which is the story of one woman's year in Greece as it crosses and doubles back over the lives of her mother and grandmother.

Book excerpt: This book is a comparative study of six Italian American and Greek American literary works written in the three last decades of the 20th century and examined in pairs. Based on the common theme of the authors' return, either metaphorical or literal to the country of origin and its culture, Return Narratives explores the common motifs of mythology, ritual, and storytelling where the third generation writers resort to in their quest for self-definition. With a common historical and cultural background in the old neighboring countries, Greece and Italy, and a similar reception in the new world facilitating a comparative approach, the ethnic writers of the two literatures, clearly envisage ethnic space as a site of resilience and empowerment.

Book excerpt: One of the hottest trends to sweep the country in the past decade is the growth of supper clubs and other forms of cooking groups. The combination of socializing while cooking together or eating dishes made prior to meeting up has become a much-loved pastime for participants in thousands of clubs around the country. This book is a fantastic resource to starting one's own club, and for generating theme nights for club meetings. Also included are profiles of 12 different clubs from around the country, including a vegan potluck, a wine pairing group, an adventurous eating club (think Fear Factor-style dishes), and a group who uses their meetings to raise money for local charities. Following the Introduction, "Guidelines to Starting and Maintaining a Successful Cooking Club" contains such information as how to recruit members; determining who performs what roles for club meetings (Does the host prepare all the dishes? Does everyone cook together in one kitchen? Do members cook from home and bring dishes to the club?); how often a group should meet (Once a month? Every other month?); and how to determine budgets for each meal. Twelve themed menus, from comfort food to grilling to Italian night, are presented throughout, each menu containing eight courses, all of which can be prepared early and can easily be transported to a designated meeting place. Together these menus constitute a full year's worth of monthly ideas safe for any cooking club. Accompanying each menu are tips to decorate and ways to make each evening's theme stand out. The book is written by Dina Guillen and Michelle Lowrey (The Plank Grilling Cookbook), two members of the 8-year-old, Sacramento-based Kitchen Table Cooking Club, which has been featured in Cooking Light magazine.

Book excerpt: Winner of the 2023 Brian McConnell Book Award from the International Society for Contemporary Legend Research In the last fifty years, folklorists have amassed an extraordinary corpus of contemporary legends including the “Choking Doberman,” the “Eaten Ticket,” and the “Vanishing Hitchhiker.” But what about the urban legends of the past? These legends and tales have rarely been collected, and when they occasionally appear, they do so as ancestors or precursors of the urban legends of today, rather than as stories in their own right. In The Nail in the Skull and Other Victorian Urban Legends, Simon Young fills this gap for British folklore (and for the wider English-speaking world) of the 1800s. Young introduces seventy Victorian urban legends ranging from “Beetle Eyes” to the “Shoplifter’s Dilemma” and from “Hands in the Muff” to the “Suicide Club.” While a handful of these stories are already known, the vast majority have never been identified, and they have certainly never received scholarly treatment. Young begins the volume with a lengthy introduction assessing nineteenth-century media, emphasizing the importance of the written word to the perpetuation and preservation of these myths. He draws on numerous nineteenth-century books, periodicals, and ephemera, including digitized newspaper archives—particularly the British Newspaper Archive, an exciting new hunting ground for folklorists. The Nail in the Skull and Other Victorian Urban Legends will appeal to an academic audience as well as to anyone who is interested in urban legends.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume approaches the relations between China and the Catholic Church in a quite comprehensive and unprejudiced way. Its approach is new since it clarifies the root of the persistent antagonism of both the imperial and republican Chinese Authorities toward the Catholic Church: no matter how the Catholic approach has been, they kept their Sino-centric attitude. It also points out the lack of a truly objective and complete understanding of China by the Western society, including Catholic missionaries: from a blind admiration to a negative evaluation, determined by contingent circumstances and motivations. It tries to clarify myths and stereotyped understandings, that have been created during the historical process, including the role of the Jesuits and in particular of Fr. Matteo Ricci. It also pays particular attention to the role of the Vatican in the recent religious policy of Chinese Government. The reading of the book could be enlightening especially for academics, university students and Christian clergy interested in the history of Catholic Missions in China.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once one of the World's greatest Emperors fell in love with a village girl. The girl was homely, good and sweet; yet she was light years away from the Emperor in terms of looks and stature. The Emperor wanted to send a love letter to her. He had a million messengers at His beck and call. He could have sent the best poet in the world, who could have composed an epic on Him. Or could have sent the world's finest dancer. Or the best scholar. Or the greatest warrior. Instead the Emperor chose a lousy courier boy, who was lazing around, for the job. The boy could not speak well or run fast. Yet in a state of ecstasy he ran all the way to the girl's house. And delivered the letter. The Emperor is the Lord. And you are the girl. He has fallen in love with you. And OH MY GOD! is His love letter. I am the lousy courier boy. You may hate the courier boy. But I entreat you, my dears, don't ever neglect the message from your beloved, the Emperor. - Varalotti Rengasamy
