Book excerpt: In The Pride of the Confederate Artillery, Nathaniel Cheairs Hughes, Jr., illustrates the significance of the unit and, for the first time, positions this pivotal group in its rightful place in history. The Fifth Company, Washington Artillery of New Orleans, fought with the Army of Tennessee from Shiloh to Chickamauga, from Perryville to Mobile, and from Atlanta to Jackson, Mississippi. Slocomb's Battery, as it was also known, won repeated praise from every commander of that army. Although it sustained high losses, the company was recognized for its bold, tenacious fighting and was considered the Army of Tennessee's finest close-combat battery. The Pride of the Confederate Artillery is the compelling story of four hundred men, their organization and service, their victories and defeats in over forty battles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1915, when Jennings Cropper Wise was commandant of the Virginia Military Institute, The Long Arm of Lee has never been surpassed as an authoritative study of the Confederate artillery in the Civil War. Volume 1 described the organization and tactics of the field batteries of General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia from the time of the Battle of Bull Run through the Maryland invasion. Volume 2, beginning with an account of the Chancellorsville campaign, includes a close look at the Battle of Gettysburg, in which tactical errors made by the Confederate side are reassessed. There was heroism aplenty, not only from generals like J.E.B. Stuart and Stonewall Jackson but also from ordinary artillerymen who fought doggedly and resignedly until the end.

Book excerpt: Originally published in 1915, when Jennings Cropper Wise was commandant of the Virginia Military Institute, The Long Arm of Lee has never been surpassed as an authoritative study of the Confederate artillery in the Civil War. Volume I describes the organization and tactics of the field batteries of General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia and their performance in famous battles, including those at Bull Run, Malvern Hill, Cedar Mountain, Harper's Ferry, Sharpsburg, and Fredericksburg. It ends with the bitter winter interlude before the Chancellorsville campaign of the spring of 1863. Volume 2 of Wise's history, also available as a Bison Book, takes up the harrowing events stretching from Chancellorsville to Appomattox. In his introduction, Gary W. Gallagher addresses some of the myths exposed by Wise, touching on the persistent under-estimation of the artillery's role in winning battles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the heady days of the rush to arms in 1861, comparatively few Southern men volunteered for service in the artillery: most preferred the easily accessible glory of the infantry or cavalry. Yet those that did quickly earned the respect of their fellow soldiers, and a reputation for being able to "pull through deeper mud, ford deeper springs, shoot faster, swear louder ... than any other class of men in the service". Given that field artillery was invariably deployed in front of the troops that it was supporting, the artillerymen were exposed to a high level of enemy fire, and losses were significant. This title guides the reader through the life and experiences of the Confederate cannoneer where he came from; how he trained and lived; how he dressed, ate and was equipped; and how he fought.

Book excerpt: Originally published by UNC Press in 1989, Fighting for the Confederacy is one of the richest personal accounts in all of the vast literature on the Civil War. Alexander was involved in nearly all of the great battles of the East, from First Manassas through Appomattox, and his duties brought him into frequent contact with most of the high command of the Army of Northern Virginia, including Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson, and James Longstreet. No other Civil War veteran of his stature matched Alexander's ability to discuss operations in penetrating detail-- this is especially true of his description of Gettysburg. His narrative is also remarkable for its utterly candid appraisals of leaders on both sides.

Book excerpt: “Truth in history is sacred and these things must be said.” So writes Philip Stephenson in this remarkable memoir about his four years of service in the Army of Tennessee. Written in 1865, when he was twenty, Stephenson’s diary relates his observations and reminiscences in painstaking detail. A private who became a veteran infantryman and artilleryman, Stephenson witnessed the death of Leonidas Polk and shared a blanket with a sleeping General Breckinridge. Ably edited by Nathaniel Cheairs Hughes, Jr., Stephenson’s vibrant memoirs indeed stand out, as he had hoped, “as though photographed in letters of fire.”

Book excerpt: Revised second edition."The action of Capt. Alcide Bouanchavid's command in front of Nashville, in the two days' desperate battle between Gen. Hood's army and that of Gen. Thomas, was the most gallant, heroic, and brilliant artillery fighting done during the war.....of (the) brave little French Pointe Coupee boys, many had poured out their blood and given their lives for the honor and glory of Louisiana. - report after battle of Nashville The Pointe Coupee Artillery One of the most distinguished units of the Confederacy, the Pointe Coupee Artillery was originally made up of French Creoles who saw service right across the river from their home parish of Pointe Coupee at Port Hudson, as well as in Mississippi, Georgia, Tennessee and Alabama. The Pointe Coupee Artillery was organized in November, 1861. It was increased to a battalion with three companies at Abbeville, Mississippi ca. August 1862. Its members were originally recruited in Pointe Coupee, East and West Baton Rouge, Livington, Concordia and Orleans parishes. After Vicksburg, many of the paroled and exchanged prisoners ended up in the 6th Field Artillery Battery in late 1863. The battalion was consolidated into one company. It then joined the Army of Tennessee. With less than 25 men it surrendered on April 26, 1865.This edition contains a roster of the men of the brave Pointe Coupee Artillerymen. Where possible, photos and genealogical information has been added.
