Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this rare volume is Humphrey Hardwicke’s existing works. His first sermon was preached in his own day as, “The Difficulty of Zion’s Deliverance and Reformation.” It is taken from Psalm 126:5-6 where we find sowing in tears, but reaping in joy. Hardwicke’s explanation of this is nothing less than spiritually uplifting concerning what this means in relation to sowing the precious seeds of reformation in the church. Do we truly desire to see the church Reformed once again, and a new vigor of power infused into it to preach Christ to a dying world? Without heeding Hardwicke’s exhortation, and hearing his masterful picture of what the church ought to be “up and doing” before God, there will be no sowing and no reaping a new Reformation for today’s church. In the second half of the work we find, “The Saint’s Gain by Death,” and what it means to be assured of salvation from 2 Corinthians 5:1. The Christian is not to live in doubt, but in full assurance of faith, knowing we have a heavenly home which was made by God waiting for those he has saved. In this life our travail is frail, transitory, and perishing. In the life to come, it is blessed and eternal in the heavens. With certainty, Hardwicke explains that every converted heart and careful soul may and ought to be assured, that when his body shall be dissolved, his soul shall have a happy dwelling with God in heaven. This is not a scan or facsimile, has been updated in modern English for easy reading and has an active table of contents for electronic versions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning with the desires of our hearts and ending with the priesthood of all believers, this series of meditations traces a path through some central concerns of the Reformation. Along this path, the authors, all faculty at Wycliffe College, engage with biblical passages which were important at that time and remain just as vital today in working out what it means to be a Christian, what it means to be the people of God. It seems appropriate, given the central place Scripture had for the reformers, that we should follow their lead in looking to the Bible in the context of the life of the church. While some church communities enthusiastically proclaim their Reformation roots, others look askance at particular reformers and seek to distance themselves from the whole of the Reformation. Yet the Reformation is not an era we in the West can simply ignore; it is bred in our bones, runs through our veins, and shapes our life together in myriad ways. These meditations are not simply historical explorations or an exercise in documenting past events. Rather, the authors grapple with questions which we continue to struggle with today--questions of faith and grace, sin and salvation, work and worship. These meditations will provoke discussion and broaden our theological understanding while guiding us into a deeper understanding of the faith.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Reformation did not happen instantaneously; it was something God patiently arranged over a number of years. As you read this book, you will learn how the Lord used some people to plant the seeds of church reform long before October 31, 1517, when Martin Luther published his ninety-five theses. Luther's story is well-known; we trust you will find it interesting and instructive to read about him and about forty others (John Knox, Peter Martyr Vermigli, Zacharias Ursinus, Willem Teellinck, etc.) who contributed to the Reformation - some well known and others not so - most of whom are Reformation heroes. To provide a more full picture of the many sided Reformation, chapters are also included on the Anabaptist and Counter Reformation movements. The book concludes with a brief summary of the influence of the Reformation in different areas of life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new work, the final compilation of Cawdrey’s writings, was his most popular and well-received treatise on Family Reformation. He urged William Gouge, who wrote “Of Domestical Duties” which was almost exhaustive on the reformation of the family, to condense a smaller work that would be more manageable for the laity. Cawdrey took this task up himself with Gouge’s blessing. As a result, this work on Family Reformation became exceedingly popular. It covers the duties of husbands to wives, wives to husbands, children’s duties, as well as master and slaves. Cawdrey also includes a catechism to confirm the teachings of biblical truth in a reformed family. Also included in this volume are the last of Cawdrey’s known works covering humility, the effects of a good man on the community in which he lives, as well as a short scholarly treatise on the role of the magistrate called “The Depths of Satan Discovered.” This work is not a scan or facsimile, has been carefully transcribed by hand being made easy to read in modern English, and has an active table of contents for electronic versions.

Aside from the thief on the cross who hung there next to the Christ, Manasseh is the “other” near deathbed convert that one finds in Scripture. Manasseh ought to hold a special place to two kinds of people who read the Bible. The first is the sinner who thinks they have sins that are bigger than Christ is a Savior. They are timid to come to the Savior, believing that God might not save such a lost person as they are. And the second are believers who wonder how their sinning after conversion affects their standing before God, robbing them of the full assurance of faith that they should have in Christ. God worked in the life of one of the most wretched people who ever lived, and the narrative in 2 Chronicles 33 shows how a despicable heathenish dog can be converted and changed by the abundant power of Jesus Christ through the Covenant of God’s free Grace. As wicked as Manasseh might have been, God still reached down from heaven to change him, save him, reconcile him, and begin reformation not only of his own life, but life in the church at large. Consider that God saved a wretch like Manasseh from sin and hell, as abominable as he was, and abundantly pardoned him through saving grace only found in Jesus Christ. Such a truth should give sinners hope and give Christians a reason to cultivate a greater amount of godly assurance as they walk through the journey of this life before the face of God. Study Questions follow at the end of the work.
