Bowler offers a sympathetic and revealing portrait of megachurch women celebrities, showing how they must balance the demands of celebrity culture and conservative, male-dominated faiths. Book Synopsis The Secret Life of a Preacher's Wife by : Shirley
Download or read book The Secret Life of a Preacher's Wife written by Shirley and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2012-07 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My sincere hope is that every person in an abusive relationship will get out, and that the abuser will be changed by realizing the pain and suffering they cause. When I prayed that God would allow me to marry a preacher, somewhere in my mind I thought it would guarantee me a life of love, peace, and happiness. Nothing was further from the truth. After all, preachers are men too, clothed in nice suits, shoes, and fancy robes. All my life, I had been around marriages that should have ended years ago. I wanted to be different; I wanted to help people change. I wanted to see men love and cherish their wives. We all know for the most part at least on the surface that preachers' wives seem to be more than happy. Some wear the designer suits and hats with fancy matching shoes. On occasion, I did too. However, I soon found out, at least in my life, it was all superficial. I was all smiles and encouraging words outside the door, but most days, behind closed doors, my life was a living hell. Three months into my marriage, I began living in a nightmare. I told myself I would never tell anyone. I would help the world believe we had the ideal marriage. Even before the I-do's, I knew there were some problems. Before long Shirley became a "preacher's wife with a secret life," and everything in her told her that she's not the only one!

Book Synopsis The Bride of Christ Goes to Hell by : Dyan Elliott
Download or read book The Bride of Christ Goes to Hell written by Dyan Elliott and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2011-11-16 with total page 477 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The early Christian writer Tertullian first applied the epithet "bride of Christ" to the uppity virgins of Carthage as a means of enforcing female obedience. Henceforth, the virgin as Christ's spouse was expected to manifest matronly modesty and due submission, hobbling virginity's ancient capacity to destabilize gender roles. In the early Middle Ages, the focus on virginity and the attendant anxiety over its possible loss reinforced the emphasis on claustration in female religious communities, while also profoundly disparaging the nonvirginal members of a given community. With the rising importance of intentionality in determining a person's spiritual profile in the high Middle Ages, the title of bride could be applied and appropriated to laywomen who were nonvirgins as well. Such instances of democratization coincided with the rise of bridal mysticism and a progressive somatization of female spirituality. These factors helped cultivate an increasingly literal and eroticized discourse: women began to undergo mystical enactments of their union with Christ, including ecstatic consummations and vivid phantom pregnancies. Female mystics also became increasingly intimate with their confessors and other clerical confidants, who were sometimes represented as stand-ins for the celestial bridegroom. The dramatic merging of the spiritual and physical in female expressions of religiosity made church authorities fearful, an anxiety that would coalesce around the figure of the witch and her carnal induction into the Sabbath.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the Pre-Trib Rapture from a non-dispensationalist perspective. It contains many insights that are fresh and life changing! You will discover that it's not for all who profess Christ, but for the overcomers - the Bridal Remnant! It does not just appear in one or two Scriptures but is a major theme of the New Testament. The Bride longs and prepares for the Bridegroom as she awaits her upward call. The Bridegroom is coming soon, and she knows it, and can see the day approaching. He will take her to Himself as He has promised. This is, and has always been, the hope of the true church - to be with Jesus. Do you have this hope in you or has it been stolen by preachers who focus on this age rather than the one to come? There are two churches at the end - one that is lukewarm and one that's on fire. There is a bride and a harlot. There is a church that is taken and one that is left. Clearly now the lines are being drawn. If you are wanting to know the truth about the Rapture, this is the book for you!
Book Synopsis Christian Marriage by : David Martyn Lloyd-Jones
Download or read book Christian Marriage written by David Martyn Lloyd-Jones and published by Banner of Truth. This book was released on 2012 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an age which has seen an almost total collapse of marriage and when, in many cases, marriages end in divorce with children being raised in 'broken homes', Dr. Lloyd-Jones" words speak powerfully into our present situation. It is a situation which may be seen as giving Christians, and especially Christian marriages, a valuable opportunity to bear witness to biblical truth. The way in which Dr. Lloyd-Jones, like the Apostle Paul, deals with marriage relationship, is extremely important - to attempt to deal with Christian practice apart from Christian doctrine is to tread a dangerous path. As these chapters on Ephesians make clear, the only Christianity powerful enough to penetrate and change society is that which is derived from the work of the Spirit of God.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sinclair Wortham, Lord Mayville is a man haunted by the sins of his family and by the rejection of the woman he once loved. Seeking solace from his loneliness and an escape from the secrets hidden within the crumbling walls of his family home, he heads to the local tavern for some company and truly atrocious brandy. But Sinclair makes a terrible mistake. After a brief foray outside, his drunken wandering does not lead him back to the inn and the very willing serving girl who awaits him there. It leads him, instead, to the vicarage next door... and to the vicar's plain daughter, Althea Parker. Althea is used to being forgotten. She is used to being ignored. She is also very much used to loving Lord Mayville from afar while being utterly certain he has never glanced her way. But when he drunkenly stumbles into her bedchamber one night, she's stunned. So stunned that she screams down the rafters, bringing her father and patrons from the nearby tavern running. Now they are trapped, forced to marry and forced to make the best of a situation that neither of them wanted-at least not in that way. But there is one universal truth... We rarely get what we want in life, but fate has a way of giving us what we need.
