Book Synopsis Divine Simplicity in the Theology of Irenaeus by : Jonatán Simons
Download or read book Divine Simplicity in the Theology of Irenaeus written by Jonatán Simons and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-07-31 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on Irenaeus as key to the early Christian appropriation of divine simplicity as a philosophical principle, since he is the first Christian source to explain his usage in relation to God. Beyond providing limits for what a simple God can and cannot mean, he also applies this principle to God’s activity (i.e. creating), and to God’s names and powers. There is a growing interest in the early Christian appropriation of divine simplicity: Simons' study is timely as the first book to focus exclusively on the earliest explanation and application.

Book Synopsis The Patristic Understanding of Creation by : William A. Dembski
Download or read book The Patristic Understanding of Creation written by William A. Dembski and published by Influence Publishers. This book was released on 2019-11-14 with total page 797 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Patristic Understanding of Creation encapsulates what the Church Fathers had to say, in their own words, on the topic of creation. Going back to Roman and Byzantine times, the writings of the Church Fathers are basic to Christian theology and provide a benchmark for how Christians have traditionally understood creation. This understanding of creation, however, faces tremendous challenges in our day, especially in discussions at the intersection of science and religion. Process theology and other efforts to reconceptualize creation have explicitly opposed key elements of the Christian doctrine of creation: creation ex nihilo, the transcendence and immanence of God in creation, “the absolute creatureliness and non-self-sufficiency of the world" (to use a phrase of Fr. Georges Florovsky), the goodness of creation, and the openness of the world to divine action. All of these the Church Fathers not only held but also ably defended. This anthology is therefore not merely of academic or historical interest. In reasserting a theologically sound understanding of creation, this anthology fills a need that is both practical and urgent.

Book Synopsis The Word Appears in the Flesh by : Christ of the Last Days
Download or read book The Word Appears in the Flesh written by Christ of the Last Days and published by The Church of Almighty God. This book was released on with total page 2884 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almighty God, Christ of the last days, who has appeared to do His work, expresses all truths that purify and save mankind, and all of them are included in The Word Appears in the Flesh. This has fulfilled what is written in the Bible: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (Jhn 1:1). As for The Word Appears in the Flesh, this is the first time since the creation of the world that God has addressed all mankind. These utterances form the first text expressed by God among mankind in which He exposes people, guides them, judges them, and speaks heart-to-heart to them and so, too, are they the first utterances in which God lets people know His footsteps, the place in which He lies, God’s disposition, what God has and is, God’s thoughts, and His concern for mankind. It can be said that these are the first utterances that God has spoken to mankind from the third heaven since the creation, and the first time that God has used His inherent identity to appear and express the voice of His heart to mankind amid words. The Word Appears in the Flesh (abbreviated as The Word), expressed by Christ of the Last Days, Almighty God, currently consists of six volumes: Volume 1, The Appearance and Work of God; Volume 2, On Knowing God; Volume 3, The Discourses of Christ of the Last Days; Volume 4, Exposing Antichrists; Volume 5, The Responsibilities of Leaders and Workers; and Volume 6, On the Pursuit of the Truth. Book Synopsis Reconsidering Creation Ex Nihilo in Genesis 1 by : Nathan J. Chambers
Download or read book Reconsidering Creation Ex Nihilo in Genesis 1 written by Nathan J. Chambers and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2020-11-15 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a broad consensus among biblical scholars that creation ex nihilo (from nothing) is a late Hellenistic concept with little inherent connection to Genesis 1 and other biblical creation texts. In this book, Nathan J. Chambers forces us to reconsider the question, arguing in favor of reading this chapter of the Bible in terms of ex nihilo creation and demonstrating that there is a sound basis for the early Christian development of the doctrine. Drawing on the theology of Augustine of Hippo and Thomas Aquinas, Chambers considers what the ex nihilo doctrine means and does in classical Christian dogma. He examines ancient Near Eastern cosmological texts that provide a potential context for reading Genesis 1. Recognizing the distance between the possible historical and theological frameworks for interpreting the text, he illuminates how this doctrine developed within early Christian thought as a consequence of the church’s commitment to reading Genesis 1 as part of Christian Scripture. Through original close readings of the chapter that engage critically with the work of Jon Levenson, Hermann Gunkel, and Brevard Childs, Chambers demonstrates that, far from precluding interpretive possibilities, reading Genesis 1 in terms of creation from nothing opens up a variety of interpretive avenues that have largely been overlooked in contemporary biblical scholarship. Timely and innovative, this book makes the case for a new (or recovered) framework for reading Genesis 1 that will appeal to biblical studies scholars and seminarians.
