Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Duties of Sheriffs, Coroners and Constables: With Practical Forms The first edition of The Duties of Sheriffs, Coroners and Constables, has been out of print for some time. But the many changes and additions to our statutes affecting the powers and liabilities of these officers, since its publication, would have made a new edition necessary. It has been sought to render the present revision as thorough and complete as could be, without making the work too voluminous for ready use. The errors and omissions which time has disclosed in the former edition have been corrected and supplied, and much that is new, drawn from such subsequent legislation and the decisions of the courts, has been added. The titles of the cases referred to are now given in full, and a table of these cases is prefixed; while the index which was intended to be a complete analysis of the work has many new heads added, and its arrangement improved, to give greater facility for reference. There have also been added very full references to the decisions of the courts of the other States. These cases show great uniformity in the general principles which regulate the conduct of Sheriffs, Coroners and Constables in the discharge of their duties throughout the Union - the consequence of the offices as well as the practice having a common origin. Changes, however, have been made by legislative enactments in the different States, too frequent, and extending over too many of the States to be given in detail, but to which reference is made throughout the volume. These additions, it is believed, will render the present edition of much more general use than the former one, and as much, so as a work of this description can be.
