Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People often say to me, "You are so lucky." What I tell them is that yes, it might appear I am lucky. What has in fact been going on is a purposeful and strategic plan of action. I share that I achieve my goals by doing a little bit each day to get to where I want to go. It is similar to saying you want to take a trip to the other side of the continent or world. Most of us can't just say we want to do this and then, as if by magic, it happens. Most of us have to plan the trip - determining the timeframe in which it will take place, schedule the time off from work, save money, purchase travel books, etc. We often find ourselves doing something each day towards this goal. I have noticed, though, that when it comes to achieving our dreams and personal goals many of these skills - so natural in planning things such as vacations - don't happen naturally. This book is the result of years of working in a style and with a system that I thought everyone used. It was only when giving presentations and speeches did I begin to see the impact these "tips" were having. Throughout my talks, I would offer these ideas as "tools" to be put in the listener's "toolbox" so that they would have them readily accessible in the future. What always amazed me was that after my presentation was done, many leaders and managers would approach me saying, "I'm taking these ideas back to my business and having everyone do them...and oh, by the way, do you have this in writing so I could share it?" I would sheepishly answer that I did not - that it was simply what I did every day to achieve my goals whether in the political world, nonprofit arena or in my consulting business practice. Over the years, the requests came often enough for me to be prompted to write this book. In short, The Power of Three provides helpful ideas on where to start, how to do the 'hard' things, the best way to network, when to seize opportunities and how listening just might be the key to it all. Through reading and implementing these seemingly simple strategies, your goals and dreams, both personal and professional, will be attained.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book addresses critically the question: "What is the societal impact of urban and regional planning?". It begins with a theoretical discussion and then analyses, through a series of case studies, the intentions, contents, struggles and consequences of urban and regional planning. It shows that plans and policies often defy the commonly perceived role of advancing equality, justice, development and amenity, by causing social problems, marginalisation and inequalities. The book looks at planning from a critical distance, without a priori belief in its necessity or usefulness. The 12 chapters, written by renowned international scholars, demonstrate the multiplicity of social and political struggles over the contested terrain of spatial policies. The book focuses on four key areas where the impact of planning is explored: the community power, gender relations, ethnic tensions, and social polarisation, while comparing three societies: Australia, Israel and England. Audience: This volume is mainly intended for faculty and students of academia, but also for urban professionals and policy-makers. The book is relevant to fields such as urban and regional planning, geography, political science, urban studies, urban sociology, urban anthropology, ethnic and gender relations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Power and inequality are realities that planners of all kinds must face in the practical world. In 'Planning in the Face of Power', John Forester argues that effective, public-serving planners can overcome the traditional--but paralyzing--dichotomies of being either professional or political, detached and distantly rational or engaged and change-oriented. Because inequalities of power directly structure planning practice, planners who are blind to relations of power will inevitably fail. Forester shows how, in the face of the conflict-ridden demands of practice, planners can think politically and rationally at the same time, avoid common sources of failure, and work to advance both a vision of the broader public good and the interests of the least powerful members of society.

Book excerpt: The global energy system is undergoing a profound transformation from a system based mainly on fossil fuels to a low-carbon one based on variable renewable energy (VRE), such as wind power and solar power, to achieve the 2050 Paris Agreement. By 2050, solar and wind power, with more than 14,500 GW installed capacity, would account for three-fifths of global electricity generation. This transformation comes with significant challenges since high VRE shares will greatly increase system flexibility requirements for balancing supply and demand. Accordingly, all sectors of the power system need to unlock further requisite flexibility through technology, business, and policy innovations, including power supply, transmission, distribution, storage, and demand.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Power of Culture in City Planning focuses on human diversity, strengths, needs, and ways of living together in geographic communities. The book turns attention to the anthropological definition of culture, encouraging planners in both urban and cultural planning to focus on characteristics of humanity in all their variety. It calls for a paradigm shift, re-positioning city planners’ "base maps" to start with a richer understanding of human cultures. Borrup argues for cultural master plans in parallel to transportation, housing, parks, and other specialized plans, while also changing the approach of city comprehensive planning to put people or "users" first rather than land "uses" as does the dominant practice. Cultural plans as currently conceived are not sufficient to help cities keep pace with dizzying impacts of globalization, immigration, and rapidly changing cultural interests. Cultural planners need to up their game, and enriching their own and city planners’ cultural competencies is only one step. Both planning practices have much to learn from one another and already overlap in more ways than most recognize. This book highlights some of the strengths of the lesser-known practice of cultural planning to help forge greater understanding and collaboration between the two practices, empowering city planners with new tools to bring about more equitable communities. This will be an important resource for students, teachers, and practitioners of city and cultural planning, as well as municipal policymakers of all stripes.
