It is, and purposely so. It is designed first and last for the amateur who has no time or inclination to read technical and semi-tech nical books on poultry keeping. It aims to tell the man with a few hens what to do and how to do it. There are certain statements with which some poul try keepers will disagree. We may look for the millennium when the men who keep hens come to be of one mind as to the management of them. However, no pet theory has been put forward or new system advocated. What has been written is based largely on personal experience and what has been learned in visits to many poultry plants, large and small, in different parts of the country. It is sent out with the hope that some amateurs may find in it a suggestion or two which will help them to get more eggs with less expense and have more fun doing it. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Just Plain Chicken Talk Just plain chicken talk is the title of this book and just a plain everyday poultry man wrote it. The idea of writing a book had never occurred to the author, but after talking and explaining chickens to hundreds of men and women engaged in this particular business he was led at their earnest solicitation to set forth his ideas and the ideas of others with whom he has come in contact. In the following pages the author has simply tried, with no attempt at fine phraseology and detailed theory, to explain what he knows about poultry. This book is based upon practical chicken knowledge by practical people with no attempt to offer any plan or suggestion which cannot be practically carried out. There is a prevailing idea that there are many failures in the poultry business. This is the wrong impression. Of those who take up the business as a means of livelihood, there are no more failures than in any other vocation. To be sure there have been some large failures, but this has been mostly due to lack of experience, or perhaps they have had some ideas as to the feeding, housing, etc., that they wanted to carry out at the expense of their pocketbook. It most certainly is experience that counts, or at least it pays to follow the advice of one who has had experience and made a success of the business. I would not think of entering the dressmaking business without some knowledge or experience, yet we have heard of failures on this account in the poultry business. Don't ever think that because you have read of the success of others who have had years of experience, that with money you can accomplish more than they. Money at the spur of the moment will not do any great amount of good. If you had the equivalent in a flock of good birds and experience or knowledge, you would be in a position to succeed. I would rather have knowledge and experience than money to start in the poultry business, though both are necessary in their respective places. Even with knowledge, you will find so many little things that only experience can teach. Many wish to start in the poultry business, but have no funds. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tales of a Poultry Farm My dear Little readers: - I have often wondered why there were not more stories written about Chickens and their friends, and now I am glad that there have been so few, for I have greatly enjoyed writing some for you. Did I ever tell you that I cared for my father's Chickens when I was a little girl? That was one of my duties, and the most pleasant of all. It was not until I was older that I became acquainted with Ducks, Geese, and Turkeys, and I always wish that I might have lived on a poultry farm like the one of which I have written, for then I could have learned much more than I did. You must not think that I understand no language but English. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Illustrated Book of Domestic Poultry Our Domestic Poultry belong, respectively, to three distinct orders of the class aves; viz., the rasorial or gallinaceous order, the columbine or gyratorial order, and the natatorial or swimming order. As the term rasores leads us to infer, the birds included in this class are chiefly, if not exclusively, terrene in their habits; many of them roost, for they can hardly be said to perch, on trees, though they can use their wings; but some, as the patridge, grouse, and others, remain always on the ground. The generic characters of the gallus are, - bill moderate, strong, convex above, curved towards the point, naked at the base, and furnished with fleshy protuberances, called wattles; head surmounted with a fleshy crest or comb; legs in the male, armed with a long spur; wings short and graduated; tail-feathers fourteen, forming two vertical plains, with the under side of the feathers inclining towards each other, and so making what may be called a folded tail; the middle feathers longest and curving backwards. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Kellerstrass Way of Raising PoultryI have been several years writing this small book, and the reason it took me so long was because I would not write anything until I had tried it out satisfactorily, and the best advice I can give anyone who is about to embark in the poultry business is, start small, and learn it as you grow; then you are sure of success, and no matter what breed of chick ens you start with, first find out the kind that you like best; then go to that breeder's farm and buy the best birds that your money will buy.A good foundation is the main thing in any line of business.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poultry West of the Rockies Will the poultry business pay in the West? And Why are there not more large poultry plants? And similar questions, meet us very often from people coming from the East, and indeed many who have lived west of the divide for years can not yet understand why we should send hundreds of thou sands of dollars each year across the mountains to enrich our prosperous Kansas cousins. There are many reasons why these things are so, and one is the very prevalent idea that the chicken business is a very small thing, and hardly worth the time of a man of any abil ity, but just fit for the puttering of the women and children, to get a little pocket money out of. But what of the business of one man in Central California, who, during one year, has sold eggs, none lower than per 100, and many single settings at for fifteen? Is that a business worthy of a man? The same can be done in almost any neighborhood, but remember the old advice of Poor Richard, He that by the plow would thrive, himself must either hold or drive.
