Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poultry and Egg Situation, Vol. 203: September 1959 Turkey supplies from the current record crop are increasing seasonally. The 82 million turkeys being raised this year are 5 percent more than last year's production. A Government purchase program which will divert some of the crop to the School Lunch Program has been announced. Last year, 2 per cent of the crop was bought under a similar pro gram. Current prices average lower than last year; higher wholesale prices for heavy toms do not fully offset the lower prices for other classes of turkeys. The into-storage movement for poultry is now well under way, and stocks at the 26 major storing cities on November 25 were 6 percent larger than at the same time last year. Supplies of poultry during the remainder of 1939 and early l9uo will continue larger than in the corresponding period of the 1938-39 marketing season. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poultry and Egg Situation, Vol. 65: May 1942 The estimated output of dried eggs in April was million pounds, equivalent to about million cases of shell eggs. On the average, a case of shell eggs yields approximately 10 pounds of dried whole egg. Dried egg plants are located mostly in the midwestern States and encourage record production in that area by offering farmers an exceptionally favorable outlet for eggs. In addition to the liquid eggs being dried immediately, considerable quantities of such eggs are being placed in freezers for drying later in the year when current farm production of eggs is at a lower level. Shell eggs also are being stored for this purpose. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-01-14 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poultry and Egg Situation, Vol. 31: July 1, 1939 The poultry and egg situation in June showed little improvement over previous months of this year, reports the Bureau of Agricultural Economics. Prices of' eggs were at the lowest level since 1931] and prices of chickens were lower than at any time since the winter of 1937. The lower prices this year than last reflect chiefly larger seasonal marketings of chickens and eggs and larger storage stocks of these products. A recent supporting factor to eggrprices has been the purchase of cars of eggs by the Federal Surplus Commodities Corporation for relief distribution. The feed egg price ratio continues much less favorable for farmers than a year earlier. Receipts of eggs at the four markets New York, Chicagp, Philadelphia and Boston have been declining seasonally but continue above last year. Since late May, combined storage holdings of shell and frozen eggs have been above last year. By August 1 holdings may be 5 to 10 percent larger than on that date last year. The number of chickens from this year's hatchings in farm flocks on June 1 was about 3 percent larger than on that date in 1938 as compared with 5 percent above last year on May 1. On the basis of past relationships be tween changes in numbers of chickens on January 1 and changes in number of chicks and young chickens the preceding June 1, the size of laying flocks on January 1, 19110 may be little if any larger than'in i939. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poultry and Egg Situation, Vol. 132: January 1949 Production of eggs in the fall and winter months has increased relative to spring. This change is due to the faster increase in rate of lay per bird in the october-january period compared with other months of the year. The upward trend in the rate of lay is primarily the result of progress in breeding and flock management. With this uptrend, the Nation's current egg requirements are being met with fewer layers than in earlier years, even when the increase in population is considered. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poultry and Egg Situation, Vol. 140: Nov.-Dec., 1949 A record October egg production contributed to the unusual decline of egg prices during October and November, and production is continuing at a high rate. The output not only exceeded that of previous Octobers, but was 5 percent larger than the September production. In all previous years except l9h7, October production had been smaller. However, high October production continues past trends towards earlier fall production. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poultry and Egg Situation, Vol. 184: July 18, 1956 Production of broilers and of turkeys in 1956 will be record large, exceeding 1955 by perhaps 20 and 15 percent. Egg production also is likely to set a new record, rising perhaps 2 percent or more above the 1955 high. Egg production to July 1 was less than 1 percent ahead of last year, but pro duction in the rest of the year will reflect the year-to-year upward trend in fall rate of lay and the increased number of pullets following the larger re placement hatch this spring. Egg prices have declined seasonally since the beginning of 1956, and except for a short period after mid-june, remained above a year earlier. In 1955, prices had definitely begun to turn seasonally upward by mid-june. The prospect is for 1956 egg prices to rise seasonally but the peak may be earlier and lower than the U. S. Average of cents per dozen received by farmers in December, 1955. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poultry and Egg Situation, Vol. 72: December 1942 The earlier average hatching date this year than last has resulted in earlier addition of pullets to laying flocks. On December 1, the number of pullets not of laying age and still to be added to laying flocks was 2 percent below the record number of a year earlier. Because of the large_ proportion Of pullets added to layin flocks already, however, the number of potential layers (hens and pullets of all ages) on December 1 was 9 percent larger than last year.
