Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poultry and Egg Situation, Vol. 194: March 1958 Broiler prices in February and early Mob increased further following the sharp rises that occurred in early January. At and cents per pound, respectively, the mid-january and mid-february U. S. Average prices in producing areas were and cents above the year before. The mid-december 1957 price was cents per pound. While the price increases were partly seasonal, they were affected also by cold weather, continued high prices for red meats and by reports of high death losses now curbed in some broiler flocks. During these months of increased prices, broiler production was about 9 percent above last year, and recent placements and egg settings indicate that production between mid-march and mid-year will exceed 1957 by 10 percent. Turkey hatchings in recent months, covering 15 to 20 percent of a normal season's hatchings, have been only three-fourths of a year earlier. Farmers' January intentions were to raise about the same number of turkeys as the record million in 1957. The 1958 output is likely to fall short of the intentions, in which case prices late in the year would increase slightly compared with 1957. Current prices for turkey hens from storage are a few cents per pound higher than last year, but toms are lower. Present marketings from farms are near the season's low. The U. S. Average farm price for the relatively few sales was cents in mid-february, cents above the september-january average which included the bulk of sales from the 1957 crop. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poultry and Egg Situation, Vol. 163: Jan-Feb. 1953 The situation later, particularly toward the end of the year, will depend upon the volume of egg production. Output then will be influenced not only by the likely resumption of the upward trend in rate of lay per bird, but also by the number of chickens to be raised in 1953. Farmers reported in February that they intend to raise h percent fewer chickens than in 1952 for laying flock replacement. Wever, the egg-feed price relationships in the past few months have been encouraging to egg producers, and they are likely to continue so. This may induce farmers to raise more chickens this year than they intended on February 1. Although the egg-feed price ratio in January was below average, it was 19 per cent above a year earlier. In past years a marked improvement in the ratio usually has been accompanied by an increase in the number of chickens raised. In January and early February, egg prices were maintained by the demand from commercial breakers preparing yolk, albumen, and mixed whole egg for sale to food manufacturers and processors. The breakers' demand, stimulated by small storage holdings of frozen egg products, began uh usually early in the season. Turkey growers' January intentions were to raise 23 percent fewer small turkeys in 1953 than in 1952, and 3 percent fewer large turkeys. In recent years, the turkey crops have been larger than were indicated by farmers' February intentions. The Department of Agriculture bought about 6 percent (by weight) of the 1952 turkey crop under its surplus removal program, confining its purchases almost entirely to large turkeys. If the decline in the production of large turkeys is no greater than indicated by the intentions, the 1953 production of large turkeys will still exceed the 1952 supply of large turkeys after allowing for those bought by usda. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poultry and Egg Situation, Vol. 83: November 1943 A record quantity of chicken will be available for civilian consumption this holiday season. Supplies of turkey, on the other hand, will be moder ately smaller than a year earlier, since slaughter will be a little less than last fall and increased quantities will be_taken for the military forces. 'for 19h} as'a whole, per capita consumption of chicken and turkey will be nearly 33 pounds compared with less than 26 pounds in 19he. Marketings of both chickens and turkeys, as usual, will be seasonally heavy in the last quarter. Even at the record high supply levels, however, the unprecedented consumer demand for poultry at ceiling prices is not likely to be fully satisfied. Demand for turkey, particularly, will exceed supplies by a wide margin. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poultry and Egg Situation, Vol. 184: July 18, 1956 Production of broilers and of turkeys in 1956 will be record large, exceeding 1955 by perhaps 20 and 15 percent. Egg production also is likely to set a new record, rising perhaps 2 percent or more above the 1955 high. Egg production to July 1 was less than 1 percent ahead of last year, but pro duction in the rest of the year will reflect the year-to-year upward trend in fall rate of lay and the increased number of pullets following the larger re placement hatch this spring. Egg prices have declined seasonally since the beginning of 1956, and except for a short period after mid-june, remained above a year earlier. In 1955, prices had definitely begun to turn seasonally upward by mid-june. The prospect is for 1956 egg prices to rise seasonally but the peak may be earlier and lower than the U. S. Average of cents per dozen received by farmers in December, 1955. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poultry and Egg Situation, Vol. 86: February 1944 Weather so far this winter has been conducive to unusually high rates of egg production per layer. In the North Central States, rates of production prevailed on February 1 which are not usually reached until March 1. The average number of eggs laid per bird during January was 11 percent higher than a year earlier. With the record number of layers on farms, 17 percent more eggs were produced than during January l9uj. Although more eggs were used for noncivilian purposes in January than in January last year, civilian consumption apparently was considerably larger than in January 1933. Some retail egg prices in mid-february were a little higher than a year earlier despite increased movement of eggs into civilian channels, indicating a record strong demand for eggs for this season of the year. Supplies of eggs at prevailing prices have accumulated at some markets during the last several weeks largely because production has been timed with the weather while most seasonal uses storing, drying, and hatching are timed with the calendar. From late December 19h} to February 19, 19h the War Food Administration purchased 233,53h cases of shell eggs for price support purposes. Egg production will increase less than seasonally from the relatively high level of January and early February to the annual seasonal peak in April, while civilian demand may strengthen further as a result of seasonally reduced meat supplies. The increase in number of layers on farms from August to September was about 1 percent larger this year than last but the rate of increase, however, was about the same as last year. Laying flocks in September averaged 10 perce larger than the previous record of a year earlier.
