Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poultry and Egg Situation, Vol. 144: April 1950 Hatcheries are half-way through the 1950 season for producing baby chicks for laying flock replacement. However, it is still too early to estimate the number of chickens to be raised in 1950. In past years early-season chick hatchings and young chicken holdings on farms have proven.to be unsatisfactory for estimating numbers to be raised during the entire season. (see table So far, reports do not bear out farmers' intentions (as of February) to buy 12 percent fewer chicks than a year ago. January through April hatchery volume will be very near to last year's; and from.indications on April 1, 1950, numbers of chicks and young chickens on farms were 8 percent larger than last year. However, the April hatchery report indicated 10 percent fewer eggs in incubators on April 1 this year compared with last and a substantial drop in May orders fram l9h9. Thus it is quite possible that expectations of a small late season hatch will materialize and.that the actual numbers of chicks sold may more closely approximate the February intentions than has been so far indicated. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poultry and Egg Situation, Vol. 145: July 21, 1950 The Korean outbreak has not yet created any new requirements for eggs and poultry. Even if military demands increase, they can be partly met from existing stocks, and through the partly-offsetting reduction in civilian demand that follows from the transfer of individuals from the civilian to the military ranks. Department of Agriculture purchases of dried egg so far this year exceed the largest annual military purchases of dried egg during world mar.ii, and in the first 3 weeks of July the Department of Agriculture bought Csutjoot to certain conditions) 5 million pounds'of turkey for price support. Of course, civilian demand for eggs or poultry may increase on account of new shifts in either the price or per capita supply of meat. If such shifts develop, they are likely to affect poultry meat prices more than egg prices, not only because poultry meats compete more directly with red meats than do eggs, but also because it is easier and more practical f'or commercial ard institutional users to store poultry meats against anticipated needs. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poultry and Egg Situation, Vol. 169: Jan. 26, 1954 Several factors figure in this season's very moderate seasonal de cline. The low stocks of frozen egg are one of these factors. January 1 stocks of frozen egg were only M2 million pounds, even smaller than the small holdings of 50 million pounds on January 1, 1953, and considerably below the 67 million pounds of January 1, 1952. Because of the low current level of stocks, egg breaking in large volume probably will begin early in the season. If that occurs, a part of the seasonal surplus of eggs will be diverted before it becomes a serious price-depressing influence. Also affecting the situation is the long-time trend toward evening out seasonal variation in egg production, and with it a corresponding evening out of seasonal price changes. This has resulted largely from the increased rates of lay per hen in the fall. Rates of lay in the spring have increased relatively little. Partly as a result of the seasonal evening-out process, egg produc tion in the next few months is likely to exceed 1953 by only small margins. The possible increase will be due chiefly to the 3 percent increase from last year in January 1 numbers of potential layers on farms. Rates of lay are not likely to be significantly above a year ago. Production in October December 1953 was 6 percent higher than a year earlier, with the increased rate of lay the principal reason for the increase. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poultry and Egg Situation, Vol. 110: April-May-June 1946 Commercial hatchery operations through early may 1946 were about 3 percent below'the corresponding period of 1945° Hatchings for flock replace monts were about equal to 1945, but substantial reductions occurred in outp of baby chicks for commercial broiler production. Chicks and young chickens on farms may 1 totaled 459 million, about the same as May 1, 1945. However a much smaller hatch is expected during June and July than in the same month of 1945 so that the total number of chickens raised in 1946 probably will be 5 to 10 percent below 1945. On the basis of past relationships, this would result in a moderate decrease in the number of hens and pullets on farms January 1, 1947 compared with January 1, 1946. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poultry and Egg Situation: May-June, 1950 In the first A months of 1950, egg production was 7 percent larger than a year earlier. Farm production of eggs in 1950 probably will be 5 or 6 percent above the [h7 billion dozens of 1949, and therefore probably will top the record of billion dozens. The 1939-13 average was bil lion dozens. Through the summer, monthly production of eggs probably will continue larger than a year earlier, in line with the larger number of layers, which on May'l was 6 percent larger than the year before.' Because of a reduction in 'the number of, pullets being raised this year, by the end of fall the nation's laying. Flock maybe a few percent smaller than last year, but that prospective, reduction may be largely offset by a higher\ rate of lay. This would continue past trends toward a sharply increased rate of lay in the fall and early winter months. Accordingly, monthly egg production in 1950 is likely to exceed or at least to equal output in every month of the year. In the fall, current egg production will be supplemented by supplies from commercial cold-storage stocks, which by mid-may were as large as the largest of the 1919 season, reported on July 1 for shell eggs and on August 1 for frozen. In view of these indications of Mpla supplies, and despite continued high consumer incomes, egg prices are expected to continue sharply lower than a year before. 'the seasonal recovery of prices later this year is likely to be slow. In mid-may, the U. S. Average farm price of eggs was cents per dozen, resulting in a 30. 6 cent average to date for 1950. Seasonally ad justed, this 5 month average is equivalent to an annual average price of about 33. 9 cents. -the average for the 12 months of was A5. 5 cents. Supplies of chicken meat from farm production are increasing seasonally and marketings' of broilers from specialized producing areas are large. The U. S. Average price received by farmers for chickens in mid-may was 22. 5 cents per pound. Prices of all classes of chickens, which as a whole have declined cents per pound over the past month, might have fallen further if not for the currently high prices for competing red meats. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poultry and Egg Situation, Vol. 200: March 1959 Prices will continue below 1958 for some months because of the large supplies in prospect. If hat chings are up to intentions, egg prices will likely be below 1958 throughout the year. But they could rise to or above a year earlier by late 1959 if farmers raise sub Stan lally fewer chicks than indi cat by their intentions or by hatchery activity to date. Increased demand resulting from population increases could offset small ln creases ih production as far as price effects are concerned.
