Book excerpt: The potential application of the blackboard model of problem solving to multidisciplinary design is discussed. Multidisciplinary design problems are complex, poorly structured, and lack a predetermined decision path from the initial starting point to the final solution. The final solution is achieved using data from different engineering disciplines. Ideally, for the final solution to be the optimum solution, there must be a significant amount of communication among the different disciplines plus intradisciplinary and interdisciplinary optimization. In reality, this is not what happens in today's sequential approach to multidisciplinary design. Therefore it is highly unlikely that the final solution is the true optimum solution from an interdisciplinary optimization standpoint. A multilevel decomposition approach is suggested as a technique to overcome the problems associated with the sequential approach, but no tool currently exists with which to fully implement this technique. A system based on the blackboard model of problem solving appears to be an ideal tool for implementing this technique because it offers an incremental problem solving approach that requires no a priori determined reasoning path. Thus it has the potential of finding a more optimum solution for the multidisciplinary design problems found in today's aerospace industries. Rogers, James L. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Blackboard Architectures and Applications focuses on studies done on blackboard architecture in the industries and academe. Particularly given value is the role this paradigm plays in distributed problem solving, parallelism, and intelligent real-time systems. Composed of 21 chapters, the book contains the literature of authors who have diligently conducted studies on this concern. The book starts by discussing the blackboard model of problem solving, including control and organization, wherein goal relationships and their use in blackboard architecture are noted. Also given attention are BBI basic control loop, an empirical comparison of explicit and implicit control architectures, and the dynamic integration of reasoning methods. The book then proceeds with discussions on the concurrency and parallelism of advanced architectures. Taken into consideration include design alternatives for parallel and distributed blackboard systems; the parallelization of blackboard architectures and the Agora system; and a comparison of the cage system and polygon architecture. Real-time blackboard architecture systems are also explored. This part contains experiments, frameworks, and methods designed to approximate processing in real-time problem solving. The text also points at developments in blackboard systems. Given attention are the architecture of ATOME, performance of GBB, the Erasmus system, and the use of blackboard system for distributed problem solving. The book finally focuses on object-oriented blackboard architecture for model-based diagnostic reasoning; dynamic instructional planning in the BB1 architecture; and consideration of blackboard model for cockpit information management. The book is a vital source of data for those wanting to explore the potential of artificial intelligence.

Book excerpt: This work shows how Information and Communications Technology (ICT) can contribute to children's learning, how it can be integrated into a play based curriculum and how it relates to key areas of learning such as collaboration, communication, exploration and socio-dramatic play. It outlines the ICT requirements in the UK Foundation Stage Curriculum Guidance, and it examines the international relevance and implications of ICT for young children. The text provides a critical account of the digital divide, suggesting practical strategies for all the individuals and institutions working towards social justice. It offers guidance for the development of centre based practice and on curriculum integration and the selection of developmentally appropriate educational software. It also explores ergonomic issues, as revealed by research. How should children sit at a computer? For how long? What are the risks? Emphasis is placed on the processes of policy development and the realization of change and guidance is given on how to use development plans and evaluation tools.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last fifty years, the ability to carry out analysis as a precursor to decision making in engineering design has increased dramatically. In particular, the advent of modern computing systems and the development of advanced numerical methods have made computational modelling a vital tool for producing optimized designs. This text explores how computer-aided analysis has revolutionized aerospace engineering, providing a comprehensive coverage of the latest technologies underpinning advanced computational design. Worked case studies and over 500 references to the primary research literature allow the reader to gain a full understanding of the technology, giving a valuable insight into the world’s most complex engineering systems. Key Features: Includes background information on the history of aerospace design and established optimization, geometrical and mathematical modelling techniques, setting recent engineering developments in a relevant context. Examines the latest methods such as evolutionary and response surface based optimization, adjoint and numerically differentiated sensitivity codes, uncertainty analysis, and concurrent systems integration schemes using grid-based computing. Methods are illustrated with real-world applications of structural statics, dynamics and fluid mechanics to satellite, aircraft and aero-engine design problems. Senior undergraduate and postgraduate engineering students taking courses in aerospace, vehicle and engine design will find this a valuable resource. It will also be useful for practising engineers and researchers working on computational approaches to design.

Book excerpt: Advances and Trends in Structures and Dynamics contains papers presented at the symposium on Advances and Trends in Structures and Dynamics held in Washington, D.C., on October 22-25, 1984. Separating 67 papers of the symposium as chapters, this book documents some of the major advances in the structures and dynamics discipline. The chapters are further organized into 13 parts. The first three parts explore the trends and advances in engineering software and hardware; numerical analysis and parallel algorithms; and finite element technology. Subsequent parts show computational strategies for nonlinear and fracture mechanics problems; mechanics of materials and structural theories; structural and dynamic stability; multidisciplinary and interaction problems; composite materials and structures; and optimization. Other chapters focus on random motion and dynamic response; tire modeling and contact problems; damping and control of spacecraft structures; and advanced structural applications.
