Book excerpt: The book is a continuum of photographs of one model, Morgan Vail of Mystic, Connecticut from age twelve to age thirty-one. Initially inspired by Sally Mann's book called At Twelve: Portraits of Young Women, within a few years, it was evolving into a document of Morgan's life: playing dress up with curlers and makeup at age 13, to a serious inquiry of her future self. The photographs take place in and around Mystic- from outside in the photographer's garden backyard to inside the model's bedroom looking into her vanity mirror. When the project was undertaken in 1999, neither the photographer nor the model would know the depth of the project. At the time, it was the fortuitous timing of being neighbors, and taking advantage of photoshoot opportunities like birthdays. With each passing year, after age 16, it was a marked decision to photograph each year at least once, so it could captured for eternity. Even after a move away, and the realization that the project could not slip further from hand, it became more of a priority to make the photoshoots an annual encounter from age 26 to age 31. It has always been a focus to have a model. Models help represent an emotional state, which ties into place and time. This goes for a very nostalgic point of view, almost to the point of histrionics. The camera is perfectly designed for dramatic effect. We are drawn to the uniqueness of black and white photography because as Graham Nash once observed, "We see in color, so black and white is immediately different." History is very important, and one's place in history is even more important. The book is a contribution to the personal process of history, viewed within context.

Even so, an air of nonchalance, even gaiety, hovers over the photographs. The book is odd, oblique, sometimes opaque, and certainly deeply felt; but it sticks to the mind like a burr. It will be noticed. Once seen, it cannot be forgotten.
