Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A century ago, horses were ubiquitous in America. They plowed the fields, transported people and goods within and between cities and herded livestock. About a million of them were shipped overseas to serve in World War I. Equine related industries employed vast numbers of stable workers, farriers, wainwrights, harness makers and teamsters. Cities were ringed with fodder-producing farmland, and five-story stables occupied prime real estate in Manhattan. Then, in just a few decades, the horses vanished in a wave of emerging technologies. Those technologies fostered unprecedented economic growth, and with it a culture of recreation and leisure that opened a new place for the horse as an athletic teammate and social companion.

Book excerpt: The relationship between sport and exercise psychology and the realm of professional sport and performance has grown exponentially in recent years. Elite athletes increasingly see the value in seeking psychological advice and expertise, while consultants now work in a wider range of elite performance environments. Psychology in Professional Sports and the Performing Arts: Challenges and Strategies is a unique and timely collection that brings together the experiences and knowledge of a range of applied psychologists working in these exciting industries. The book begins with a section outlining the core skills practitioners require in the field, before chapters discussing individual sports, team sports and the performing arts. Each author looks at how theoretical principles can be applied within a particular professional context, delineating how performers may benefit from working with a psychologist, as well as the ethical and cultural challenges that they faced. Assessing the role of applied psychologists across a truly unique range of activities, from polo to motor racing and ice hockey to modern dance, Psychology in Professional Sports and the Performing Arts: Challenges and Strategies offers unrivalled insights into how sport and exercise psychology can be put into practice in challenging professional environments. It will appeal to anyone studying sport and exercise psychology, or working in the field.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from As to Polo This little book was first written in very busy days in the Philippine Islands and sent out with a good deal of hesitation, as the author was in doubt as to the correctness of many of his conclusions and as to the reception that such a book would receive. It has been received so cordially that this fourth edition is now complete and is offered to polo players. The first edition contained many errors and was shortly replaced by a second, the supply of which was exhausted late in 1918. During the war no effort was made to print a third edition and a few remaining copies of the first were used to supply the unexpected large demand this winter and spring. The third edition contains a small amount of new matter, numerous corrections, some additional comment, and one additional diagram. The chapter on rules is mostly new. Although out of date for this edition, the introduction has been left, except for certain verbal changes, as written for the earlier editions. The author thought at first of calling the book A Polo Primer, as an indication that it was intended only for beginners, but it seems to have meta fairly general demand and is, I believe, in use by army players and members of several of the newer polo clubs. Book excerpt: This work--the first of its kind in more than sixty years--covers polo in Argentina, from its beginnings in the 1870s to the summer of 2013. The history of the early pioneers is constructed with data not previously published, gathered from contemporary sources. International competitions are covered and include the Olympic Games, the Cup of the Americas and the World Championships. Particular attention is given to the major clubs, the Argentine and Hurlingham Open Championships, and the National Handicap Tournament. Several of the elite players merit individual or family mini-biographies. Myths in Argentine polo are also debunked, based upon careful analysis of contemporary sources. Travels abroad by Argentine teams are fully described as are the foreign teams that competed in Argentina. The work is enhanced by the author's personal observation of significant events and friendship with many of the participants.

Book excerpt: Dr. Ohrenspan is no ordinary man. Bluntly put, he is something of a freak. His features resemble those of a Neanderthal; his body is hairy and his walk plodding. He has suffered a lifetime of unkind stares and ridicule. In short, his existence has been a quiet hell. But with an IQ of 200 he is also somewhat of a dichotomy. Ohrenspan's origin is a well-guarded secret. The fact that he is the result of genetic experiments performed by the infamous Nazi doctor Johannes Strengele, is known only to a few close confidants like Dr. Chipmonk and Colonel Hal Hilmer. Ever since his escape from Strengele's clandestine laboratories in the hinterland of Uruguay as a young lad, Ohrenspan has had an overwhelming urge to one day return and tear his evil maker limb from limb. That day has come. With the aid of Dr. Chipmonk, Ohrenspan has completed the construction of Aquaria, a sub-oceanic city state off the coast of South America. The two scientists populated Aquaria with their own creations, a new species of pseudo-humans, having both lungs and gills, which allows them to live in water, as well as on land. Ohrenspan's invasion of Strengele's stronghold with an Aquarian army is imminent. Nothing but Strengele's death at his own hairy hands will suffice. But even the best laid plans often run afoul of bizarre events. When he finally faces his nemesis, he is shocked to realize that he has come full circle with the monster buried deep within his genetic stew. Now, a hell of a different kind takes

Book excerpt: A collection of stupid utterances, mostly unintentional--although not always--from politics, show business, sports, and anywhere else people can put their feet in their mouths. Based on recorded history, it's safe to say that dumb remarks have been with us since the invention of writing. Young or old, rich or poor, famous or unknown, people of all generations and cultures have seized the opportunity to say something dumb - stupidity has always been an equal opportunity employer. In celebration of such mental lapses and pure idiocy, here is a collection of stupid utterances, unintentional and otherwise, from the worlds of politics, radio, television, newspapers, show business, sports, and literature - and everywhere else people can - and have - put their feet in their mouths.
