Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Is History Past Politics? A brief review of Mr. Freeman's Philosophy of History will serve to set our chosen motto in a'clear light. He regarded Greek politics as the beginning of the world's state life. For him the Achaian League of Greek cities was the historic fore runner of the Federal Union of these United States. For him the real life of ancient history lay not in its separation from the affairs of our own time, but in its close connection with them. (office of the Historical Professor, For him the records of Athenian archons and Roman consuls were essential parts of the same living European history as the records of Venetian doges and English kings. It mattered little to this large-hearted, broad-minded historian of Comparative Politics whether he was writing of free Hellas or free England, of Magna Graecia or the United States. He wrote political articles on the Eastern Question and the Danube provinces for the Manchester Guardian or Saturday Review in the same spirit in which he wrote historical essays. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Political History: To the Death of Lincoln Every book, it has been said, should have a preface wherein is offered an apology for presenting another literary venture. The excuse for this volume is the newly awakened interest in our country's past. It owes its origin to a course of parlor lectures which resulted from the remark of a cultured woman who entered actively into the opportunities of her New York life. I have attended, she declared, parlor classes for the study of the great men, the historical epochs, the music, the art, the literature, and even the drama of nearly every land of Europe, but remain lamentably ignorant of the history of my own country. Write a course of lectures upon the political history of the United States and I promise to form a class of women all as ill-in formed as I am, and equally anxious to learn. It was an appeal that demanded compliance, and the interest aroused by the lectures suggested a fuller treatment of the subject in a more permanent form. The thanks of the author are due to Professor E. G. Bourne, of Yale University, for some suggestions made after reading the manuscript. The book is sent forth in the hope that it will meet the demand for a concise ac count of our political history, and that it may prove of value to the man who votes, and to the woman who often influences the voter. But the latter had been used by all the earlier political writers, and it is hoped that no one will see anything invidious in a mere technical phrase. The reader's considerate judgment is requested upon all de ficiencies and omissions, beyond those which have been compelled by the necessity for condensation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History and Government of the United States, for Evening Schools The purpose of this textbook is not only to present intern esting and instructive accounts of our American history and of our political institutions, but also to introduce the superior students of evening schools to some of the fundamental prin. Ciples of our social and business conditions. The maturity of such students in years and in experience necessitates a presentation of American a airs decidedly different from that in ordinary day-school textbooks. An experience of many years in several cities in teaching this important subject in evening classes has led me to prepare a text that is somewhat unlike any other both in its nature and in the range of its topics. Intending to deal with matters that the evening-school student desires and needs to know, I have assumed that the reading and study of the text would be accompanied by skill ful supplementary instruction by the zealous teachers of these interesting classes. The especial value of American history and civil govern ment in evening schools is due to two facts: that many of the students are foreign-born or children of the foreign-born, aux ious to know the story of our country; and that most of them will soon be voters, who ought to know at least as much as these pages contain. Of these students, few have attended day school long enough to reach courses in American history. I have known many cases where foreigners entered city even ing schools within a day or two of their arrival. This text is one of several in a series successfully used in many cities. It is now presented in a thoroughly revised edition. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in British History and Politics The Appendix of Notes - some of them supple mentary discussions - is considerable in proportion to the text. But their bulk might easily have been increased I have, for example, withheld references to the many passages in Bacon's writings on which the summary exposition of his politics (on pages 13 as distinguishable from his views on the problem of Church and State, is directly founded. Some of the Notes and discussions - such as those on the glittering generalities of the Declaration of Independence, on a standard for interpretation of the Great Charter, and on King and Crown in British history - will, I hope, have value even apart from their relation to the text. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Courts, the Constitution, and Parties: Studies in Constitutional History and Politics All except the first, the longest of these papers, have appeared elsewhere in print. I hope the republication is justified by their value and interest and by the fact that the five papers in combination constitute a discussion of the most fundamental problems Of constitutional history. The paper on The Significance of Political Parties appeared in the Atlantic Monthly and is here reprinted with the courteous permission of the publishers of that magazine. The paper on Political Parties and Popular Government was given as an address before the Phi Beta Kappa Society of Indiana University in June, 1911. Social Compact and Constitutional Construction was printed in the American Historical Review. The last paper was printed in the Michigan Law Review and in the Pro ceedings of the Fiftieth Anniversary of the Constitution of Iowa. I wish to express my appreciation Of the assistance of one of my students, Mr. Arthur P. Scott, in the search for the early court decisions, which either involved the principle that laws may be declared void or stated principles of political philosophy. In detailing these events, however, it con cerns itself with their relation, and seeks to point out the connection of cause and effect that exists between them. A bare catalogue of unrelated facts, though true in themselves, would not make history in the modern sense. There must be some definite principle on which the selection of the facts is based. This principle is that a fact, in order to have bistori cal value, must help to explain what goes before or what comes after in the life of a people. Kinds of History. - It is clear that the past life of mankind may be regarded from different points of view. Thus, if the special purpose is to show how men have advanced in knowl edge from age to age, and what influences have quickened their minds or changed their modes of thought, the narrative is called Intellectual History. If the object is to point out the changes which have taken place in men's ideas of right and wrong, and to trace the development of moral standards, the work is termed a History of Morals. Political History deals with the external events in the life of a nation, showing its varying relations to other nations and to its own government. Constitutional History has to do with changes in the form and principles of government, and in the character and administra tion of law; Economic History, with the past conditions of a people in respect to the possession and acquisition of wealth. So the particular field to which the narrative is confined de termines how the history is to be classified. It is very difficult, however, to keep these departments distinct, as events which properly fall within the scope of one department have often a very important bearing on those which belong to another. A history which gives anything like a complete narrative of past events must investigate the facts pertaining to all sides of a nation's life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Old Master and Other Political Essays Why has no one ever written on the art of academic lecturing and its many notable triumphs? In some quarters new educational canons have spoken an em phatic condemnation of the college lect ure, and it would seem to be high time to consider its value, as illustrative of an art about to be lost, if not as exemplary of forces to be retained, even if modified. Are not our college class-rooms, in being robbed of the Old-time lecture, and getting instead a science-brief of data and bibliog raphy, being deprived also of that literary atmosphere which once pervaded them? I've are unquestionably gaining in thor oughness; but are we gaining in thought fulness? We are giving to many youths an insight, it may be profound, into spe cialties; but are we giving any of them a broad outlook? Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the United States for Schools The aim of the authors in writing this book has been to present what seemed to them the main historical developments in American history, the knowledge of which will enable the pupil to understand 'he social, political, and economic institutions which he finds about him in this land wherein he lives. In doing this we have tried to use simple language, to show clearly the relation of one fact to another, and to keep the story constantly moving forward. We have sought to interest not by the selection of the merely entertaining facts which are often the things of least value, but by choice of the facts that have meant something in our growth as a nation. This is first of all a text-book and not a story-book. We make no apology for the omission of many of the yarns of American his tory. If history is worth teaching at all, it is worth teaching as causal, vital, meaning history. We heartily approve of reading his tory for mere pleasure. History is, we believe, in many of its high est literary forms, most delightful and valuable mere reading, but for serious study there are certain essentials which should not be disguised or palliated by facts which are only entertaining, and not essentially significant.
