Book Synopsis A Protestant Purgatory by : Laurie Throness
Download or read book A Protestant Purgatory written by Laurie Throness and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2008 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the role of protestant theology on the penal system of eighteenth-century England. While modern historians of crime admit that religion played an important role in the conception and practice of justice, relatively little work has been done to assess just how these two pillars of early modern society interacted. This study examines the theological background to the Penitentiary Act of 1779--a deeply theological piece of legislation that conflated punishment and hard labour with the ability to redeem sinners. Whereas Catholic theology stressed the role of purgatory after death, this study looks at how the Church of England fostered a sense of earthly purgatory for those convicted by the criminal justice system.
Book Synopsis Cultural Work of Empire by : Carol Watts
Download or read book Cultural Work of Empire written by Carol Watts and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2007-06-05 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues that the Seven Years' War (1756-63) produced an intense historical consciousness within British cultural life regarding the boundaries of belonging to community, family and nation. Global warfare prompts a radical re-imagining of the state and the subjectivities of those who inhabit it. Laurence Sterne's distinctive writing provides a remarkable route through the transformations of mid-eighteenth-century British culture. The risks of war generate unexpected freedoms and crises in the making of domestic imperial subjects, which will continue to reverberate in anti-slavery struggles and colonial conflict from America to India. The book concentrates on the period from the 1750s to the 1770s. It explores the work of Johnson, Goldsmith, Walpole, Burke, Scott, Wheatley, Sancho, Smollett, Rousseau, Collier, Smith and Wollstonecraft alongside Sterne's narratives. It incorporates debates among moral philosophers and philanthropists, examines political tracts, poetry and grammar exercises, and paintings by Kauffman, Hayman, and Wright of Derby, tracking the investments in, and resistances to, the cultural work of empire.Key Features* Topical in its focus on the making of 'modern' subjectivity during the first 'global war'* Path-breaking in advancing our understanding of the cultural history of eighteenth-century Britain* Timely in its combination of new historical research with a critical engagement with debates in postcolonial and subaltern studies* Original in its account of the literature of the Seven Years' War and its outstanding analysis of the writing of Laurence Sterne

Book Synopsis A History of the Modern Fact by : Mary Poovey
Download or read book A History of the Modern Fact written by Mary Poovey and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2009-11-30 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did the fact become modernity's most favored unit of knowledge? How did description come to seem separable from theory in the precursors of economics and the social sciences? Mary Poovey explores these questions in A History of the Modern Fact, ranging across an astonishing array of texts and ideas from the publication of the first British manual on double-entry bookkeeping in 1588 to the institutionalization of statistics in the 1830s. She shows how the production of systematic knowledge from descriptions of observed particulars influenced government, how numerical representation became the privileged vehicle for generating useful facts, and how belief—whether figured as credit, credibility, or credulity—remained essential to the production of knowledge. Illuminating the epistemological conditions that have made modern social and economic knowledge possible, A History of the Modern Fact provides important contributions to the history of political thought, economics, science, and philosophy, as well as to literary and cultural criticism.
Book Synopsis Gouverneur Morris by : William Howard Adams
Download or read book Gouverneur Morris written by William Howard Adams and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2008-10-01 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A plainspoken, racy patrician who distrusted democracy but opposed slavery and championed freedom for all minorities, an important player in the American Revolution, later an astute critic of the French Revolution, Gouverneur Morris remains an enigma among the founding generation. This comprehensive, engrossing biography tells his robust story, including his celebrated love affairs during his long stay in Europe. Morris’s public record is astonishing. One of the leading figures of the Constitutional Convention, he put the Constitution in its final version, including its opening Preamble. As Washington’s first minister to Paris, he became America’s most effective representative in France. A successful, international entrepreneur, he understood the dynamics of commerce in the modern world. Frankly cosmopolitan, he embraced city life as a creative center of civilization and had a central role in the building of the Erie Canal and in laying out the urban grid plan of Manhattan. William Howard Adams describes Morris’s many contributions, talents, sophistication, and wit, as well as his romantic liaisons, free habits, and free speech. He brings to life a fascinating man of great stature, a founding father who receives his due at last.
