Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2003 in the subject Business economics - Economic Policy, grade: 1,0 (A), University of Lodz (Department of Entrepreneurship), language: English, abstract: In the following paper I want to pay attention to the SME (Small and Medium-sized Enterprises) Sector in Poland. Researches within this Sector are very important, because that sector is the most dynamic in the whole Economy. Entry and Exit Rates of Businesses are about 10 % in the EU (European Union) and are even more in Poland. Noreen Doyle described it as the backbone for a lasting and effective business environment. As well as in the Transitional Period, which will be examined in detail in this paper, as in the accession phase of Poland to become member of EU, the development of the SME Sector will determine the future of Poland to a great extent. After defining this Sector, I will show the development separated in phases since 1980. In the following chapter, I will try to sum up the most important influencing factors for SMEs. Finally, I will consider some specific problems of Poland joining the EU.

The results presented in this book cover the period between the fall of Communist regime in Poland and the Polish accession to EU in May 2004. The book's focus and scope are quite unique since as opposed to relatively large literature dealing with micro-enterprises in developing countries it concentrates on rural micro-enterprises in post-transitional Eastern Europe. The book fills the gap in the prevailing micro-enterprises literature dealing predominantly either with first world or third world.

Book excerpt: The structure of the work – as indicated earlier – is based on solving the research problem posed. It results from the adopted goals and formulated research hypotheses. The need to analyse the above issues related to the research area was included in the structure of the thesis, divided into four chapters. The first chapter is devoted to the issues of micro, small and medium-sized enterprises. It presents key definitions and classifications based on the existing legal framework in Poland. A statistical review of SMEs was conducted and the role of this sector of enterprises in the national economy was shown. Moreover, the European Union's policy towards micro, small and mediumsized enterprises was also reviewed and the main determinants of their development were presented in the light of the quoted research. The second chapter concerns the issue of business environment institutions. It reviews the most important concepts, presents the division of business environment institutions by form of support; analyses the organizational and legal aspects related to the functioning of BEI, also the spatial distribution of the discussed institutions indicating what role they play and the directions of their further development. The third chapter analyses the activities of business environment institutions in the area of financial support for micro, small and medium-sized enterprises. The analysis included the activities of loan funds, guarantee funds, business angel networks and private equity/venture capital funds on the Polish market. The fourth chapter of the paper concerns the analysis of the functioning of business environment institutions in the field of financing support on the basis of research conducted among micro, small and medium-sized enterprises in Poland. It presents the methodology of the research, characterizes the research sample and analyses the results obtained. The results of the study were also the final conclusions along with the evaluation of the functioning of financial BEIs and the author's recommendations for future activities for the analysed institutions. The literature in the form of scientific monographs and articles in peerreviewed scientific journals was used to write the study. In addition, legal acts, reports and analyses, internet sources and the author's own research and analysis were also used.

This book was released on 2014-10-01 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many years, small and medium-sized enterprises have occupied an important place in the strategy of socio-economic development of the European Union. This is due to the fact that these entities have many important functions related to, among others, creating a significant share of the national income and jobs, introducing innovations and causing many other effects that positively influence the level of competitiveness of the European economy. In order to ensure favorable conditions for the development of the SME sector in the European Union at the central level, as well as at the level of individual countries and regions, numerous assistance programs are developed in the form of specific support instruments available for the smallest entities. Currently, the European Union is entering the new 2014-2020 programming period, which is associated with the implementation of the principles of the Europe 2020 Strategy. This perspective will be associated with the possibility of the participation of entrepreneurs in a number of projects and the use of many support instruments, both financial, as well as non-financial. As in the previous years, however, certain actions will have to be taken and the acquisition of specific skills useful in efforts to absorb the EU assistance will be required. At the same time, exploiting the potential of the environment in the 2014-2020 perspective will be associated with changes in the conditions for the functioning and development of many European small and medium-sized enterprises. The monograph is devoted to the above-presented matters. Its aim is the presentation, analysis and evaluation of selected issues which, according to the authors, will be important for development processes of small and medium-sized enterprises in the 2014-2020 perspective. The book consists of fourteen chapters, which are divided thematically into three separate parts. The first part concentrates on the external conditions for the development of small and medium-sized enterprises in the latest strategic perspective of the European Union. The second part of the monograph emphasizes the challenges and changes in management systems which will largely determine the functioning of the SME sector in the coming years. The third, and last, part of the monograph focuses on selected determinants of building the competitiveness of businesses in the SME sector. The monograph is addressed primarily to managers and owners of small and medium-sized enterprises, along with undergraduate and graduate students, as well as post-graduate business students. At the same time, we hope that this book will be also appreciated in the scientific community, enriching the debate on the future challenges in managing the development of small and medium-sized enterprises, as well as inspiring discussion and further research in this field.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this article is an attempt to determine the scope of Polish companies operating on the market, which could raise capital by the means of the Warsaw Stock Exchange. Therefore, a preliminary analysis is made of selected results achieved by economic entities in the years 2003-2012 as well as values and trends produced by them, with particular emphasis on the fluctuation of their number, undertaken investments, structure of revenues and expenses and financial performance, against other countries of the European Union. To illustrate the whole potential volume, the study covered all structures operating in the market: micro, small, medium and large enterprises and their results are shown on the basis of statements arising from the undeniable specificity of the entire SME sector and large companies operating in Poland.

This book was released on 2013-01-11 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1999. Small businesses now constitute the most dynamic element of growth in the emerging markets of the Central and Eastern European region. This book argues that the small and medium sized enterprise (SME) sector has contributed more to the growth of these countries in transition than have privatized state enterprises and the public sector. In 1989 most of the countries of Eastern and Central Europe were still under an economic system dominated by state-owned enterprises. Since then a process of liberalization has been unleashed to promote free market policies. This has involved programs of privatization and restructuring of public enterprises, as well as the promotion of policies to enable a private sector to develop. Small businesses are creating thousands of new jobs while large companies are "retrenching and downsizing" their work force. In some countries of the region this process is much further along than in others. However, the SME sector has developed at a more rapid pace than has the privatization of the large public companies. There has been a flurry of new enterprises springing up throughout the region which are "trickling up" in a frequently hostile environment against tremendous odds, and yet managing to have a pronounced impact on their respective economies. Small businesses have taken over in sectors that used to be dominated by big enterprises, primarily in services and consumer products. They have provided a crucial outlet for pent-up entrepreneurial talent that had remained dormant during the long period of state domination. This work urges legislators, policy-makers, and development agencies alike to take account of the importance of the SME's in their legislation and planning. Given a more favorable environment, these small businesses will provide even greater impetus for economic growth. Equally important is for entrepreneurs themselves to be convinced of the rightness of their path in societies that have traditionally looked down upon profit-seekers as unscrupulous and selfish. If the CEE region is to achieve its full potential of economic growth, policies and support mechanisms to promote the SME sector will be needed to assure a favorable environment.

Book excerpt: This informative set analyzes the dynamics involved with creating, growing, and managing small businesses amid different geographic, institutional, and political environments. This two-volume work explores the behavior and decision making of small companies; their business strategies for launch, growth, and survival; and their contribution to the larger global economy. Utilizing information and data gleaned from proven entrepreneurs and small business operations, this reference provides insight into the political, environmental, and competitive forces that support and impede small business ownership, and offers strategies for navigating them. Written by leading researchers from around the world, the set presents a broad view of the small business sector, focusing on conception, ownership, financing, and growth strategies. A look at external factors features the impact of political and environmental influences; extant regulations affecting small firms; and programs for promoting this sector. The first volume takes a micro view of the small business phenomenon, profiling the owner and the skills necessary to be successful. The second volume utilizes a macro approach, focusing on the operational concerns of and the environment factors bearing upon small businesses.
