Book excerpt: By all accounts, the case of Poland and its segue to market economy and democracy is a success story: 30 years of uninterrupted growth and development, infrastructure expansion, and modernization of the economy and society. Epochal changes have unfolded in a timespan of merely three decades. Change has taken place so fast that children born in late 1980s and onwards cannot remember what life in Poland under communism was like and cannot relate to it. Also, many elderly people, easy victims of romanticizing their own youth, tend to forget. As a result, the uniqueness of Polish transition and transformation, the boldness and efficiency of reforms, and the success that Polish society mastered together, tend to be undermined today both domestically and internationally. Poland has now been a member of the EU for more than 15 years. During that time, Poland’s image on the EU scene evolved from newcomer, through ‘model child’, champion of growth, to – in some respects – a maverick. This volume’s objective is to remind society, old and young, researchers, scholars and practitioners, that Poland’s success is an outcome of well-thought out and bold structural reforms implemented in a swift and timely manner, of society’s support for these reforms, and of third actors’ benign assistance. Looking back on the 30 years since the collapse of communism, and at the over 15 years of EU membership, this book offers an interdisciplinary, comprehensive and critical insight into factors and processes that have led to today’s Poland.

Book excerpt: PLEASE NOTE THIS IS AN NJR AND BLURB SHOULD NOT BE USED IN ITS RAW FORM: This book considers the social, economic and political consequences of Poland's transition from socialism to capitalism. The immense changes that have occurred in the country over the past decade and a half are analysed in their historical and geo-political framework. Poland was the first Eastern European country to return to capitalism, with its shock-therapy economic reforms replicated throughout the region. These sought to dismantle the socialist elements of the economy as rapidly as possible and open up the post-socialist countries to the world capitalist market. The former socialist countries were absorbed into the international division of labour and their economies quickly became a part of and dependent upon the global capitalist system. The revolutions of 1989-91 not only transformed Eastern Europe but instigated fundamental changes to the international capitalist system itself. By opening up the ex-socialist economies to international capital a new era of globalisation was opened, as the principles and practices of neo-liberalism gained ascendancy. While a section of society prospered from this opening, other social groups saw their living-standards decline, creating large social inequalities. One consequence of these social divisions has been the destabilising of the newly created democratic political systems. The growth of more authoritarian, conservative political currents in Poland is an example of this. As the largest and most strategically important country in Central-Eastern Europe, Poland has increasingly become a focus of international relations between the major powers. Events in Poland, especially after European expansion, influence relations between the USA, the European Union and Russia. This book therefore looks both at how the absorption of Poland into the international capitalist system has transformed the country and at how this process is contributing to developments globally. It finishes by considering developments since EU Accession and at the expected results of this expansion both within Poland and an enlarged EU.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject Business economics - Economic Policy, grade: 5 (Erasmus), which is escellent, University of Wroclaw (Faculty of Law and Economy), course: Crucial Problems of Polish Economic Policy in the Globalisation Era, language: English, abstract: If one concerns oneself in Poland’s economic changes after escaping from the influence of the Soviet Empire in the Year 1989, especially one assumption made by several experts at this time seems to be rather naïve to us in today’s perspective: It is the assumption that the economic level of Poland and other countries of Central and Eastern Europe would catch up with the one of other countries, such as France or even Germany within only a few years, if the changes and reforms are made in the way they should. Some experts assumed that this duration is as low as three years. 1 Today we know that it is not so easy to catch up for several reasons, although some of those countries have had a amazing development and still have an economic growth that is far above the one of the so-called “Old European countries”, the EU-15. What I want to research at this point is how the situation after the short time given by the expert’s forecasts really was. I therefore take the situation in 1994, which makes, if compared to the first assumptions, a rather “tolerant” period of five years from 1989.

Book excerpt: The current state of crisis and depression in Poland's economy is not a new phenomenon, although it is at present being accorded vast coverage world wide. This study by Polish authors is the first in the English language to cover Poland's economic development from 1900 to the present day. This book presents a detailed and penetrating analysis of the Polish economy. It charts the various stages of Poland's development from the rule of the Three Black Eagles; Russia, Austria and Prussia, to the terrible effects of the Great Depression; through Nazi occupation to the inflation and economic decline of the present day. For each period, besides economic and monetary factors, the contributors survey aspects of the effects of economic growth on social mobility and career perception, public health education and technology, backed up with comprehensive statistical data. The unique nature of this book will make it an invaluable resource for students of economic history and Eastern European studies. -- from dust jacket.
