Book excerpt: Drawn from the 24th International Workshop on Condensed Matter Theories (Buenes Aires, Sep. 2000) these 45 papers, while centered on the concepts and techniques of condensed-matter physics, also address broad issues of common concern for theorists who apply advanced many-particle methods in other areas of physics. Five primary topics are covered by the contributions: quantum liquids, boson condensates, strongly-correlated electron systems, superconductivity and superfluidity, and phase transitions. Some of examples of specific questions addressed include shot noise of mesoscopic quantum systems, heat transport in superlattices, transitions from non-colinear to conlinear structures in a magnetic multilayer model, order-disorder transitions in a vortex lattice, perturbation theory in the one-phase region of an electron-ion system, and nonlinear dynamics in metal clusters. c. Book excerpt: This thesis presents a revolutionary technique for modelling the dynamics of a quantum system that is strongly coupled to its immediate environment. This is a challenging but timely problem. In particular it is relevant for modelling decoherence in devices such as quantum information processors, and how quantum information moves between spatially separated parts of a quantum system. The key feature of this work is a novel way to represent the dynamics of general open quantum systems as tensor networks, a result which has connections with the Feynman operator calculus and process tensor approaches to quantum mechanics. The tensor network methodology developed here has proven to be extremely powerful: For many situations it may be the most efficient way of calculating open quantum dynamics. This work is abounds with new ideas and invention, and is likely to have a very significant impact on future generations of physicists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 1972 monograph is devoted to the analysis and interpretation of the infrared and Raman spectra of solid compounds, frequently used for their identification and characterization. It was thought unsatisfactory to analyse such spectra by the theory applicable to gas-phase samples, though this was frequently done. Furthermore, the results obtained by far infrared and laser Raman spectrometers, which detect the movement of atoms and/or molecules as a whole, had no gas-phase analogy. A separate approach to solid state vibrational spectra was therefore proposed within this volume. Dr Sherwood describes the solid state physics of vibrational spectroscopy and extends it to the more complex structures of low symmetry. He assumes an understanding of the infrared and Raman spectra of gases.

Book excerpt: Phase separation has become a fascinating subject in the discussion of cuprate superconductors. All these materials have layered structures containing CU02 planes as the most important building blocks. They are coupled only weakly so that the electronic properties show a nearly two-dimensional behaviour. Due to correlations the undoped compounds are insulators of the Mott Hubbard type exhibiting long-range antiferromagnetic order. Upon doping a rich scenario of physical phenomena appears: Even at low hole concentra tions the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature is reduced drastically and spin-glass behaviour as well as a hopping type conductivity can be observed. Further doping leads to metallic-like conductivity and below Tc to super conductivity. In this doping regime antiferromagnetic fluctuations are still observed. At very high charge carrier densities superconductivity is lost and the systems show pure metallic conduction without ,magnetic correlations. One of the most interesting phenomena in high-T c research is the interplay between magnetism and conductivity or superconductivity. Especially the behaviour of charge carriers in the antiferromagnetic background raises a number of open questions. Two scenarios become possible: the carriers tend to delocalize over the whole crystal forming a homogeneous state with band-like structure or they separate into hole-rich (conducting, superconducting) and hole-poor (insulating, antiferromagnetic) phases leading to an inhomogeneous structure.
