Book excerpt: Finalist for The Barnard Hewitt Award for Outstanding Research in Theatre History, given by the American Society for Theatre Research. Silver Medal Winner of The Victor Villaseñor Best Latino Focused Non-Fiction Book Award, given by the International Latino Book Awards. Honorable Mention for the Best LGBTQ+ Themed Book, given by the International Latino Book Awards. A queer genealogy of the famous performance space and the nuyorican aesthetic One could easily overlook the Nuyorican Poets Cafe, a small, unassuming performance venue on New York City’s Lower East Side. Yet the space once hosted the likes of Victor Hernández Cruz, Allen Ginsberg, and Amiri Baraka and is widely credited as the homespace for the emergent nuyorican literary and aesthetic movement of the 1990s. Founded by a group of counterculturalist Puerto Rican immigrants and artists in the 1970s, the space slowly transformed the Puerto Rican ethnic and cultural associations of the epithet “Nuyorican,” as the Cafe developed into a central hub for an artistic movement encompassing queer, trans, and diasporic performance. The Queer Nuyorican is the first queer genealogy and critical study of the historical, political, and cultural conditions under which the term “Nuyorican” shifted from a raced/ethnic identity marker to “nuyorican,” an aesthetic practice. The nuyorican aesthetic recognizes and includes queer poets and performers of color whose writing and performance build upon the politics inherent in the Cafe’s founding. Initially situated within the Cafe’s physical space and countercultural discursive history, the nuyorican aesthetic extends beyond these gendered and ethnic boundaries, broadening the ethnic marker Nuyorican to include queer, trans, and diasporic performance modalities. Hip-hop studies, alongside critical race, queer, literary, and performance theories, are used to document the interventions made by queer and trans artists of color—Miguel Piñero, Regie Cabico, Glam Slam participants, and Ellison Glenn/Black Cracker—whose works demonstrate how the Nuyorican Poets Cafe has operated as a queer space since its founding. In focusing on artists who began their careers as spoken word artists and slam poets at the Cafe, The Queer Nuyorican examines queer modes of circulation that are tethered to the increasing visibility, commodification, and normalization of spoken word, slam poetry, and hip-hop theater in the United States and abroad.

Download or read book Café after Dawn written by Xiao Yan and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2020-05-05 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For Readers of Rupi Kaur and Courtney Peppernell, a Poetic Diary that Confronts and Meditates on Love, Hope, and Despair "There were two entrances to the café, but I always opted for the narrower one hidden in the shadows. I always chose the same table at the back of the little room to write my poems to you, day by day. Let the world around you fade, and close the door. Get rid of your rolling cigarettes. Yes, I’m writing this for you. Some beautiful things: warm nights after the rain, old books, tea in the afternoon, fresh laundry, and blurry moon. This might justify your life." Written in the vein of today's young confessional poets, Café after Dawn isa diary written in the form of poetry. Penned during the four years that Xiao Yan spent with her mother who was undergoing cancer treatment in New York, each poem is a reflection of her thoughts on existential crisis, universal truth, traumatized youth, death, romance, and the struggles between hope and despair in our modern society. Using the power of poetry and innovative visual design, as well as experiments on the connection between Eastern and Western culture, Café after Dawn unleashes a healing power that will set readers free from judgment, self-doubt, and anxiety.

Book Synopsis Nuyorican Feminist Performance by : Patricia Herrera
Download or read book Nuyorican Feminist Performance written by Patricia Herrera and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2020-05-12 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Nuyorican Poets Café has for the past forty years provided a space for multicultural artistic expression and a platform for the articulation of Puerto Rican and black cultural politics. The Café’s performances—poetry, music, hip hop, comedy, and drama—have been studied in detail, but until now, little attention has been paid to the voices of its women artists. Through archival research and interview, Nuyorican Feminist Performance examines the contributions of 1970s and ’80s performeras and how they challenged the Café’s gender politics. It also looks at recent artists who have built on that foundation with hip hop performances that speak to contemporary audiences. The book spotlights the work of foundational artists such as Sandra María Esteves, Martita Morales, Luz Rodríguez, and Amina Muñoz, before turning to contemporary artists La Bruja, Mariposa, Aya de León, and Nilaja Sun, who infuse their poetry and solo pieces with both Nuyorican and hip hop aesthetics.

Book Synopsis The Mischief Cafe by : T. S. Poetry Press
Download or read book The Mischief Cafe written by T. S. Poetry Press and published by T. S. Poetry Press. This book was released on 2014-10-05 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry is for life, not for ivory towers. At Tweetspeak Poetry, it has been our delight to bring poetry to people, right where they are. To bring together established poets and poets taking first steps. And to invite those who thought they could never be a part of poetry to dip in without fear. Because we strongly believe poetry is for life. Somewhere along the way, as part of our poetry merry-making, we opened The Mischief Caf . It's a "welcome" space on our website. But also somewhere along the line, it began to feel like more. Maybe The Mischief Caf should not just be virtual, we started to think. And so it began. The idea of a traveling caf , bringing poetry to people right where they are. In their own homes, amidst friends. With toast (buttered) and tea. It's an idea that's still working itself out, but for now, sometimes a member of our Tweetspeak Poetry team will come to tea with poetry. And sometimes poetry lovers won't want to wait for that. So they'll make a little poetry mischief on their own. This book describes the idea of a Mischief Cafe and how to run one, includes over thirty poems from T. S. Poetry Press titles (and from the conversation with fans that started the idea of this book), and has blank pages for new poems that caf gatherers can write together over time using (or not) the 34 poem title prompts provided throughout. Overall, the book gives you everything you need to run your own Mischief Cafe (or attend one): an explanation you can read aloud at your gathering, poems to share, prompts to inspire. Everything, that is, except the toast (buttered ) and tea.

Beggs explores a wide range of poetic forms and subjects. From the formal structure of the sonnet to invented forms and linguistic experiments, from the vulgar to the salubrious, from the humorous to the offensive, the poet brings a new voice and a fresh sense of urgency to each poem. The result is a book which crosses genres and schools of poetry. Beggs's poems veer from the immediately accessible to the obscure; in a word: eclectic.
