Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poetry and Mystery of Dreams I was first induced to compile this work, by observing that many of the similes of 'the older English and German poets were evidently inspired by the beautiful superstitions of their day, and indeed that all the art of the Middle Ages, whether literary or plastic, rests to a degree upon a supernatural foundation. The mysticism or Spiritualism of herrick is by no means confined to his Fairy Land or Charms and Ceremonies chaucer has carried his respect for Dreamland to the verge of faith, while in shakspeare we find the inspiration of popular belief constantly developed in the most exquisite'fancies. In illustrating the ancient interpretations of dreams by frag ments of modern poetry, I have therefore simply attempted to bring back the latter to the point whence it in many instances originated, and to compare the perfect flower with the first rude cutting from which it sprung. In a clear-cut voice "as simple as ink," Mathias Svalina's THE WINE-DARK SEA vocalizes the urge to write oneself alive. Through this lyric journal of taut poems, each titled The Wine-Dark Sea, Svalina breathes life into overlooked places: the driveway a car turns into at the end of a workday, how a tree holds the dirt, the edge of a page on which "I'd always assumed / I'd die alone." Every poem is a baffled drop, a pulse trying not to be dead, and beneath the spine of each sentence, Svalina hides, carrying us, seeking an exit. It is impossible not to be stained by THE WINE-DARK SEA.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poetry and Dreams My belief that dream and poetry are identical, is more and more confirmed. 2 Lamb, who was in spirit even more than in accomplishment a poet, believed that the degree of the soul's creativeness in sleep might furnish no whimsical criterion of the quantum of poetical faculty resident in the same soul waking. 3 Such expressions suggest that dream ing and poetizing, if not identical as Hebbel believed, are more than superficially related. If we wish to understand poetry, a clue like this, given us by the poets themselves, is worth following. Unfortunately, however, dreams are as little known to us in their true nature as poetry itself. Though they are as old as history probably as old as mankind - they are still obscure in their cause and significance and their rela tion to the ordinary mental processes. The people, in all countries and from the earliest times, have clung to the belief that they are significant, particularly as foretelling the future. Their interpretation, however, has always been vague and uncertain. The theories of modern psychologists do not ordinarily go far or deep enough to be convincing or even interesting. Altogether the world of dreams has remained a mystery to us - a world in which we live a fantastic secondary mental life curiously unrelated to that of waking, from which we return puzzled by our fleeting memories. Book excerpt: Three narratives, set in the fifth, fourteenth, and twentieth centuries, all revolving around an ancient text and each with a love story at its centre, are the elements of this brilliantly ingenious novel, a follow-up to the international bestseller An Instance of the Fingerpost. The centuries are the 5th (the final days of the Roman Empire); the 14th (the years of the Plague — the Black Death); and the 20th (World War II). The setting for each is the same — Provence — and each has at its heart a love story. The narratives intertwine seamlessly, and what joins them thematically is an ancient text — “The Dream of Scipio” — a work of neo-Platonism that poses timeless philosophical questions. What is the obligation of the individual in a society under siege? What is the role of learning when civilization itself is threatened, whether by acts of man or nature? Does virtue lie more in engagement or in neutrality? “Power without wisdom is tyranny; wisdom without power is pointless,” warns one of Pears’s characters. The Dream of Scipio is a bona fide novel of ideas, a dazzling feat of storytelling, fiction for our times.

Book excerpt: “Take The Talented Mr. Ripley, cross it with Suspiria, add a dash of La La Land and mix . . . and this arty psychological stalker novel is what might result.” —The New York Times Book Review Named a Best Book of the Summer by The New York Times, O Magazine, Elle, Town & Country, Tatler, and Publishers Weekly and one of “5 books not to miss” by USA Today In small-town Michigan, Abby Graven leads a solitary life. Once a bright student on the cusp of a promising art career, she now languishes in her childhood home, trudging to and from her job as a supermarket cashier. Each day she is taunted from the magazine racks by the success of her former best friend Elise, a rising Hollywood starlet whose life in pictures Abby obsessively scrapbooks. At night, Abby escapes through the films of her favorite director, Auguste Perren, a cult figure known for his creative institute the Rhizome. Inspired by Perren, Abby draws fantastical storyboards based on her often premonitory dreams, a visionary gift she keeps hidden. When Abby encounters Elise again at their high school reunion, she’s surprised and warmed that Elise still considers her not only a friend but a brilliant storyteller and true artist. Elise’s unexpected faith in Abby reignites in her a dormant hunger, and when Elise offhandedly tells Abby to look her up if she’s ever in LA, Abby soon arrives on her doorstep. There, Abby discovers that while Elise is flourishing professionally, she is lonely and disillusioned behind her glossy magazine veneer. Ever the supportive friend, Abby becomes enmeshed in Elise’s world, even as she guards her own dark secret and burning desire for greatness. As she edges closer to Elise, the Rhizome, and her own artistic ambitions, the dynamic shifts between the two friends—until Abby can see only one way to grasp the future that awaits her. An electrifying novel by the author of The Wonder Garden, The Paper Wasp is a knife-edge story of dark friendship and twisted ambition against the backdrop of contemporary Hollywood. “[A] page turner . . . a stunning portrait of a fixated woman and an addictive, modern commentary on an eternal theme of obsession . . . Lauren Acampora gives us a soul trip/head trip/rarefied LA trip replete with surrealism and social commentary.” —Caroline Kepnes, author of You

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To believe, or not to believe, is that the question? Mark Stringer offers these poems and journal essays on behalf of the Great Mystery. This book of poems and art is more about asking better questions, rather than imposing opinions or presuming any final conclusions about the nature of reality. Creative wisdom has no gender, no religion or sect ... or a name given to an imaginary entity like a pet for human beings to play with, to confine, or to abuse for that matter. Fighting wars over differences of opinion about the nature of reality is the ultimate evil, and pure human folly. The author feels that inherently, there is no contradiction between so-called "creationism" and evolutionary theory. Scientific observation and the ability to explore the macro/micro cosmos is a natural condition and a result of an awesome intelligent intentional consciousness ... that which without beginning preceeded the "big bang," and that which expands with designs of unlimited variations of light and dark energy. By way of both scientific and spiritual consensus, the universe we are able to observe is expanding at an ever accelerating rate from a common source of origin. This book of poetry and art is a prayer for the wisdom to care for this planet with courage and compassion, and to share its life giving resources equitably. The author observes that Love is not the easy way out, it is simply the only way to go. The author also warns that belief systems which do not consciously honor, observe, understand, and mimic natural life systems ... are destined to fail. Forever.

Book excerpt: Fiction. At the heart of MYSTERIOUS DREAMS OF THE DEAD is the spiritual search for a father who died in a plane crash north of Lake Superior when his son was fifteen. Mike Shintani decides in his early thirties to address the curious circumstances surrounding his father's death; the senior Shintani's body was never found, and wolves circled the crash site as if guarding the area. The impetus for Mike's search for truth is a diary he found in the basement of his home. It was obviously his father's, but it was written in Japanese. Mike never knew his father could write Japanese. He himself could neither read nor write the language. He was fortunate enough to enlist the help of Naoko Ito, a Japanese grad student at the University of Toronto. It turned out, the book was a dream diary, filled with poetry, descriptions of the surreal, and the story of a love affair with a woman named Chiemi. Chiemi is at the centre of the elder Shintani's dreams, and Naoko, after some time, seemingly disappears into thin air. Both appear as ghosts in dreams. Another great mystery of Mike's life is the behaviour of one of his best friends, Boku Sugiura, who decides one day to rob a bank, in the name of his grandfather and redress for Japanese Canadians. The two strains of the novel come together in Moose Jaw. Mike discovers the truth about his father's life and Boku's uncle (Daniel Sugiura from Terry's previous novel, THE THREE PLEASURES), a protestor in the Moose Jaw stand-off. Through elements of the Japanese ghost story (kwaidan), magic realism, and Buddhist myth, secrets are revealed and explored. MYSTERIOUS DREAMS OF THE DEAD is an imaginative examination of the effects of exile, internment, and dispersal on the third-generation of Japanese Canadians (the Sansei).

Book excerpt: From an award-winning poet comes a collection on heartbreak and transitions, written with a piercing lyric ferocity. FINALIST FOR THE NEW ENGLAND BOOK AWARD FOR POETRY • “Written with great tenderness and intimacy, Dream of the Divided Field reveals what we do (and do not) owe to others, and what we owe to ourselves.”—Poets & Writers The poems in Yanyi’s latest book suggest that we enter and exit our old selves like homes. We look through the windows and recognize some former aspect of our lives that is both ours and not ours. We long for what we had even as we recognize that we can no longer live there. Yanyi conjures the beloved both within and without us: the beloved we believe we know, the beloved who is never the person we imagine, and the beloved who threatens to erase us even as we stand before them. How can we carry our homes with us? Informed by Yanyi’s experiences of immigration, violent heartbreak, and a bodily transition, Dream of the Divided Field explores the contradictions that accompany shifts from one state of being to another. In tender, serene, and ethereal poems, Dream of the Divided Field examines a body breaking down and a body that rebuilds in limitless and boundary-shifting ways. These are homes in memory—homes of love and isolation, lust and alienation, tenderness and violence, suffering and wonder.

Book excerpt: An “astonishing” book of poetry from the Pulitzer Prize–winning author of American Primitive and “one of our very best poets” (Stephen Dobyns, The New York Times Book Review). Dream Work, a collection of forty-five poems, follows Mary Oliver’s Pulitzer Prize-winning poetry volume American Primitive. The deep perceptual awareness on display in that collection is all the more radiant and steadfast here. With this new collection, Oliver has turned her attention to the solitary and difficult labors of the spirit–to accepting the truth about one’s personal world, and to valuing the triumphs while transcending the failures of human relationships. Oliver brings grace and empathy to the painful legacies of history, whether by way of inheritance–as in her poem about the Holocaust–-or through a glimpse into the realities of present–as in her poem about an injured boy begging in the streets of Indonesia. And yet, Oliver’s willingness to find light, humanity, and joy continues, deepened by self-awareness, by experience, and by choice.

Book excerpt: Message to my Readers I grew up in Brooklyn New York. Ive been a restless man. All the world's dreams are in my eyes. These poems range over many terrains of the Earth and terrains of my heart. These poems are an overflow, undertow, personally universal, emotionally logical, bodily spiritual expression of love, existentially divine and beyond analysis. My poems exist between lucidity and trance, meaning and nonsense, depth and invisibility. They are Liminal. They serve as a doorway to the ineffable, a cryptic map, a cry, a journey into mayhem, myth, mystery. Poetry, at bottom, is inspired by the Muse: a female mythic form through which insight, wisdom, beauty and the arts are given. Often in a cryptic manner. A muse serves as a mouth, a door, an instrument. A muse takes many forms, speaks any language, exists in any time. She comes by invitation, love, seduction, silence. My poems see things. And they lend me their sight, their vision. I seek the spirit in poetry, how to elicit from my deeper self that which is given by the archetypal, and not with the game of verse or the babbling rhetoric of popular events. I seek the essential, the profound, to make of them a fresh insight into ourselves. To make us unforgettable. Divination: divinare , to be inspired by a god. It is defined as the practice of attempting to discover hidden knowledge by supernatural means. Perception by intuition; instinctive foresight. "Poetry is a divination of the spiritual in the things of sense which expresses itself in the things of sense, and in a delight of sense." [Jacques Maritain, Creative Intuition in Art and Poetry, Pantheon, 1953] Divination: These poems are divinations in the sense that they go beyond the surface, beyond the root, to the seed of the poems heart. Knowing the seed you know the flowering. In that way, in the presence of the source of hidden knowledge, is revealed what is to come. The revelation must be divined from the spirit in the poem. It requires deep listening. Dream: Dream is the embryo of vision. Dreams are the blood of the soul. There are dreams meant to sustain you, and those meant to be lived. Dreams that carry you, and dreams you carry. Dreams of silence, and dreams of song. Dreams die, like the phases of the moon. Once, they lit your way; then they turn to darkness. The dream is a belly. It is a womb that carries many creatures; a world. It is an ark. A nest. Poetry, love, canticles, bodies, mouths, pomegranates My desire is written in my eyes, my ears, my mouth. I sing within surreal dreams and mad desires. I imprint my dream on the wheel of desire; I place it in the womb of the sea. Cheja
