Whitney: Poems and Poetic Prose At various times during the past dozen years or more - the period covered by my efforts in the literary field, I have been advised, even importuned, by well-meaning friends, to gather up the scattered, and, as I fear, withered leaves that have fallen from my tree of poesy, and weave them into a garland; in other words, to publish my poems in a book. To act upon this suggestion, while grateful for the spirit which prompted it, I have hitherto been loth; for, although a lover of poetry, and an occasional writer of rhymes, I have never deemed myself a poet, nor imagined that any production of mine would entitle its author to even the lowest pedestal, or humblest nook, in the "poet's corner" of public opinion.
